Bee stings and Coumadin/Warfarin

Has anybody has unusual reactions to bee/wasp sting while on Coumdin or warfarin?

Its been many years since I have been stung by a bee or a wasp, but somehow I manged to get stung twice in the last three months while on Coumadin. The first sting had a reaction that lasted two weeks and my INR went up to 3.3 from previous readings of 1.9 and 1.7.

I was stung again this week and two days later, my hand swelled considerably, turned bright red and was hot to the touch. Benadryl did not stop the swelling. The doctor prescribed antibiotics and within 36 hours my hand is back to normal.

I researched the web, but cannot find anything to address this. I'd love to know if others have had similar experiences.

No personal experience. But... if not an actual bee but a yellow jacket or other wasp, there
is neurotoxin in their venom.

Among the mix is norepinephrine, which functions like adrenaline, not to mention your
own adrenaline response. This can cause the body to react to a "stressful event" that is
probably greater than the annoyance you actually feel over a sting. In reading articles
about warfarin/coumadin INR levels to spike, this kind of stressful event is on the top of
the list. I would guess this kind of thing could explain it.

I had the same reaction the last two days. I have been on Coumdin for
the past 10 months and I got a normal bee sting the other day. I did
not think anything about the bee sting, but the next day I could hardly
get up out of bed. It felt like I had a really bad hang over. I was
sore all over my body. I had the worst head ache. I have been stung
many times before with multiple stings at one time and have not had a
problem.

My Mother has been stung while on coumadin and her INR doubled from 3.5 to 6.2 with 24 hours. I thank you all for your stories and will ask the doctor to prescribe an antibiotic since benadryl did not do too much.

I was stung by a bee that looked like a black n white bumble bee in south Dakota.
I had a weird reaction. It stung me twice one worse than the other. The reaction
on my arm took about 12 hours to spread. It swelled to a small softball then
turned bright red began to itch and burn. I took. Benadryl. And applied
Benadryl and hydrocortisone. Nothing really helped. By day 4 my arm was
still swollen and the red area was turning blue. I stopped my warfarin to see if
that would help heal. It did seem to stop the burning and itching. We then went
into a pool fed by a natural hot springs and minerals. The next day I could see
some normal skin coming back. By day three after the hot spring swim my arm
is returning to normal. Though there is still a scar like shadow. I never had a
chance to get my inr checked as I'm out of town. I would really like to know
what kind of bee stung me and if being on the warfarin made my reaction so
severe. Anyone have any information or know where I might get some
answers?? Thanks. Sandi from PA

Just got stung tonight after staring coumadin last week. I have never had such pain from a sting. As of now, very localized but nothing is helping. don't think I can sleep. Not really swollen - yet. A bit, but in the toe where it stung, but my entire foot is somewhat swollen and KILLING ME. To the doc in the AM if no better.
Wish I had that mineral bath here - owwww!

Just got stung today via honeybee I'm sure was a honeybee and taking 10 mg
Coumadin daily. Got Red had a little pustule I put anabiotic on it but now I notice
is swollen tissue around it. Have not taken any Benadryl but might take one.

Should I call the doctor? I have a home Coumadin machine I could measure my
INR.

Was stung by a Yellow Jacket three times in my lower right arm on
Tuesday. Wednesday I went for my regular INR test. Doctor called and
had me increase my dosage by 1 mg for a single day, then resume regular
dose and retest in a week. Forgot to tell him of the sting, but I do
believe it affect the IDR level... Will find out next week, if my
levels have returned to my customary dosage.
Will also say these were the first stings since on Warfarin and reaction
was more extensive, painful and lasted longer than any in the past...

Got stung by a wasp yesterday near the right wrist and today the arm is very swollen up to the elbow. Started Warfarin 1 year ago. Prior to that was stung about 5 times by a wasp with minimal swelling afterwards. Trying ice packs and an anti-histamine and waiting until the end of the day to see how much more swollen it might get. Swelling so far is consistent with my bee sting reactions but totally new for wasp stings.

I got stung this afternoon by a bumble bee in
my left big toe. This is my poor circulation
leg. I tolerate pain well but this time I'm in
excruciating pain
This harsh pain began 5 hours after the sting.
I took acteminaphine it has taken the edge off
but I can still feel it for sure. It's red and
swollen some however, I do feel tightness
around my foot. I've been on could in for 9
years. I was stung by a wasp on the bottom of
my left foot several years ago while on
coumadin but it didn't feel like this.

I was zapped by a bee or similar critter on the inside calf of my leg. Minor
irritation at first, but in an hour I noticed more pain. Four hrs after, I had a fist-
sized swelling on my calf with lots of pain.

A blood blister formed, which was about 2.5 inches in diameter. It lasted for a
week, until the upper portion split and leaked a lot of pale brown fluid. Upon the
recommendation of a visiting nurse and a doctor on call, I went to the emergency
room. They lanced the blood blister, and removed a large clot. I felt no pain, as all
the tissue enclosing the blister was dead, probably because of the immense
swelling. A visiting nurse specializing in wound care suggested maggot therapy
to remove the dead tissue. That is where it stands at this point. Not much fun.
