One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

Severe pain

Hi to you all.
The dvt behind my right knee was diagnosed nearly 2 years ago now, and back in June I was scanned again and told that the clot had totally dispersed with no valve or arterial damage. Happy days....or so I thought... even though I will be on life-long warfarin.
But over the last couple of months, I have been experiencing severe pain in my affected leg whenever I sit still for as little as 15 minutes- the pain appears to run from the groin down to the calf. It's difficult to describe accurately, but there is a 'stabbing' pain in the area of the clot and stinging/acheness/burning in the rest of the leg and an incredible 'tightness' in the hamstring region. Basically, it is now far more painful than I have experienced to date, it's even affecting my sleep and I'm having to seriously consider early retirement as I drive extensively for my job.
I wear my stockings as instructed , my INR is stable at 2.6 and I take 6mg per day. Could this be 'late-onset' PTS?
I would ap... read more

Compression Stockings and Broken Foot

Hi there,

If you've read my posts in the past, you'll know that I had a broken foot, which along with my birth control caused my DVT. The doctor told me to get compression stockings, which I did. They make my leg feel great, so I love them. My question is, does anyone know if the decreased blood flow to my foot (5th metatarsal) will cause it to heal slower?

I'm on an oral contraceptive pill andI am worried about it. I have little red marks on one of my legs and it really itches. My boyfriend says it looks like ecsmema but I've never had that in my life. I'm nervous about voicing my fears because not many people know I'm on the pill. Could someone please help? What should I be looking for?

Pregnancy with broken filter

HI,
IN March of this year the clinic I go to attempted to remove my filter and pulled it up my body and the top is bent. It's grown into my IVC. My vascular specialist says it's functional but not unreasonable to ask my to get my tubes tied. My pulmonolgist, hematologist and PCP have acted like it's ok to have more kids, I would just have to take Louvenox while pregnant, but my OB has pretty much said get your tubes tied. I'm so confused. I've researched the risks of being pregnant with a filter in, and understand some doctors put one in a pregnant woman for added protection. However, I've never been able to get information about a partially funtioning filter. I have one son. He's amazing and I always expected to have at least one more. I'm obsessing about having more kids and upset about it every day. Does anyone have a situation like this or have any input???
Thanks :)

Hi, a week ago i woke up at about 1am in the morning with real bad leg pain that
would go from my kneecap down to my ankle, i managed to get a couple hours
sleep during the night. When i woke up i had a real bad muscle pain in my calf!
My leg was also swollen and hard.

This continued on so saturday i went to tge doctors! As it was a sat my normal
doctor was not there! The doctor i saw said it could be a dvt but as its the
weekend could not do a scan till mon so gave me some injection in the stomach
and to go back in a sunday for another injection.

Sunday i went back and saw a different doctor! He didnt give me the injection and
instead did a blood test! Later in the day he called me to tell me the test was fine
but to follow it up with my normal doctor on monday!

I went back to see my normal doctor and he sent me for more blood work and
slso an ultrasound! Both the blood tests and ultrasound also came back fine!

factor V coumadin for life?

Hi, I'm 38 and had my first DVT in my calf, took lovenox shots for 10 days (both painful and expensive)and I've been on coumadin for a couple months. I had no recent travel/trauma or anything else I can attribute it's cause to.
I found out my father and 1/2 sister are factor V leiden but I have not yet tested as I'm still on coumadin.
My question is if anyone who has been diagnosed factor V has to take coumadin for life and if there is still a chance of having additional blood clots while on coumadin.

6 weeks ago I hurt my ankle by trapping the back of my ankle on my gate at
home - the pain was awful & went to a local walk in centre who x- rayed it &
thought it was broken. I had my foot in plaster & the next day the plaster was
removed by the fracture clinic at the hospital as they couldn't see a brake.

I was told I had a bad sprain & to rest it & walk a little bit if I could, I started to
try & walk on it around the house & a couple if days later I developed calf pains
that were awful. Put up with the pain for a week, then went docs for pain killers
who sent me to A & E with suspected DVT.

I had the DVT confirmed by a Dopler scan, which showed the clot was behind
the knee. I was put on warfarin & told to try & walk about on my foot. However,
my ankle is very hard & swollen which I've had for weeks as a result of the injury
but hasnt got better. I've been to the doctors about the swelling but they just
said to rest it & walk about on it.

Chronic Clotting

Hi all! I just had my one-year ultrsound yesterday (was diagnosed with a DVT knee to ankle in Oct 2006). Most of my clot has finally dissolved but a small portion still exists behind my knee. Blood is flowing through (which is good) but the doctor referred to this as 'chronic clotting'. I'm on six more months of warfarin and will get another unltrsound at the end of those six months.

My question is this - does anyone out there live with a chronic clot condition or know of anyone who does? I'm concerned about finally going off warfarin with part of the clot still there.

Any input is welcome. Thanks!

PE Symptoms

I'm hoping some of you can share your experience with a pulmonary embolism.

I had a DVT in my left thigh 7 months ago. I'm been off the Warfarin for 2 months and am on an aspirin regimen. I'm also Hetero Factor V Leiden. This morning I woke up with a sharp pain in my left upper side/back. I was fine when I went to bed last night. I don't seem to have trouble breathing and I wouldn't think anything of it and dismiss it as a pulled muscle, except that now I'm a little paranoid about every little twinge.

What kind of symptoms did you have with the PE? Was it all of the sudden? Were the breathing problems shortness of breath or a heaviness in the chest? What did the pain feel like?

Thank you for your response!

Second DVT

Following a DVT last year, I've just got back from an afternoon in A&E where the Dr thinks its pretty certain I have another one. I will get a scan Monday or tuesday to confirm, but he thinks all the signs are there. And certainly the pain is!! I remember being told that with a second DVT, you get warfarin for life, I was wondering if there was anyone out there who had had a second one and not had to take warfarin for life. Its such a horrible drug, I'd want to avoid it if I can once the new DVT is sorted. I know I'm just clutching at straws, especially as the genetic tests showed that I have prothrombin gene mutation (Factor II) so am predisposed to them, but I'm ever hopeful!!

Hi to you all out there, I would like some feedback please on an issue that I have with my job.....
Two years ago I was diagnosed with an extensive dvt behind my right knee extending up the back of my leg. Although I am now on life-long warfarin, I am fortunate that the clot has now totally dispersed with no valve damage, but my leg has been 'damaged' and is very painful if I sit immobile for any length of time- this is my problem, as my job involves driving some 800-1000 miles per week and this is proving very difficult. I try to use cruise control on the motorways, but this can only be done over short stretches. I've been advised that , if I could be provided with an automatic car fitted with hand controls, this would 'free up' my legs meaning that I could flex/stretch them whilst driving- I've tried this whilst on cruise control at night, and it really does help. Has anyone ever tried this, how did it go?

DVT recovery time

I developed a DVT that started in the back of my knee, and traveled up to my groin area in my left leg. I was 39 weeks pregnant when this was discovered, and after running lots of tests, it's presumed at this point that the pregnancy caused the DVT. I had a Ceserean delivery the day the clot was discovered, and was on Heparin in the hospital. Now that I'm home, I'm taking Coumadin daily. I'm also wearing a compression stocking, and using heat pads for the pain. My biggest question is how long will my recovery time be? I've been told that it will take about 6 weeks. At this point, it is extremely difficult and painful to walk on my left leg. How long has it taken others for this pain to subside so that you can at least walk? My double whammy is that I really need to take it easy because of the c-section, but I also need to walk to help the DVT. Any advice about your recovery period would be very helpful--thanks!

Inferior Vena Cava Filter

I'm currently living in Egypt and have just been diagnosed with a second DVT. My first one was two years ago and I've been on warfarin ever since. I've been feeling unwell for about ten weeks.

The surgeon I saw has said that I need an inferior vena cava filter fitter as an emergency. He's put me on injectable heparin for the next couple of days and wants me to have the operation on Monday.

Is this operation necessary? Is it necessary right now? If I'm taking injectable heparin would it be possible to fly back to the UK?

Any help or advice gratefully received.

Thank you

Fiona

Also will i worsen the situation as im constantly walking as its been 2 weeks since the diagnosis. Lastly i sometimes feel pulsating in my leg with the dvt is it cause for alarm? Looking forward to your responses.

My mum died from a DVT last septmeber after being sent away from hopistal 3 months earlier being told she had pulled a muscle. She later died within seconds of getting short of breath. If you think you have a DVT please push to be tested so no one else has to go thought this pain of lossing someone, to something that could have been sorted months earlier. I am currently writing the the health secterly to ask that it be made one of the first things checked when some one complains of leg pain and they have not been doing anything that would cause muscle pain. Please reply if you have been though the same. I need all the help i can get to get this started.
