One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

So I got a DVT left leg Ankle to groin on May 16, 2011. I was taking Lovenox for about
a week while introducing Warfarin. I take 5mg or Warfarin daily. My levels have been
fairly stable from 1.9 - 2.4 , usually 2.0 or above. It seems that the hospital doctor
was very unconcerned, and my PCP is just looking at the INR and is saying it's no big
deal. About 3 months prior I started taking an antidepressant (Celexa / Citalopram)
for anxiety. I did not want to take anything in the benzo class. I now read where there
are over 100 documented cases where people have gotten clots whilst on Celexa. I
think that could be a coincidence due to the large number of people on Celexa or the
like and the fact that millions develop DVT annually. Any thoughts on that? I have
been religiously wearing my compression stocking (20-30) and changing it out every
10 days or so. I think this is making a big difference. I still have a fair amount of pain
for which I have hydrocodone on an ... read more

Hello. My Father in law suffers from a clogged Greenfield filter. His lower half is extremely swollen. Are there any great docs in NY, PA, CT, NJ? There has to be someone that can help him. I was reading about Dr Kuo in California, but that trip may be too much for him. Thank you.

Side Effects?

Hi All: Well, my husband has been on Rivaroxaban now since mid April. We have to go on this research study until Mid July and then hopefully get another dopplar and his knee surgery.
Since this med is still like Coumadin, I'm wondering what the side effects are of Coumadin? He's been getting queasy and having tummy trouble. They only check his blood about every four weeks or so and are supposed to tell him if anything is wrong. Very scary. I wish he had chosen the old fashioned route, but he didnt and doesnt want to quit now.
He has no swelling, no bleeding issues, no more clot pain (though hard to tell since his knee is shattered at the moment).
Anyway, wondering if queasy is normal or no?

Hello All,
I have been taking warfarin for about a month now to treat a blood clot in my calf
and I have not seen any improvement in my swelling. I am now scared the clot
is not dissolving. Should I be concerned? How long after taking warfarin does
it take to get relief from my pain and swelling ?

I HAVE BEEN READING A LOT ABOUT HAIR LOSS. ONE THING I DID READ WAS THAT THE BRAND NAME COUMADIN DOES NOT CAUSE AS MUCH HAIR LOSS. I DECIDED TO GIVE IT A TRY, IT DOESN'T CAUSE MUCH MORE MONEY, I HAVE BEEN ON THE BRAND NAME NOW FOR TWO WEEKS AND I DEFINATELY SEE AN IMPROVEMNT. MY HAIR LOSS IS MUCH LESS. THIS IS MY EXPERIENCE AND I FEEL IT IS WORTH THE TRY. ALL MY READINGS ARE THE SAME, I AM USUALLY 2 AND TAKE 3MG. A DAY.

DVT & swelling

I am so delighted to have come across this forum. I must admit i 'googled' DVT and what I read was quite depressing and frightening! I broke my right foot in early September and was in plaster up to my knee. For a few weeks after the cast was taken off my leg and foot kept swelling and became very hard, shiny and painful. A scan at the hospital revealed I had DVTs in both my groin and calf. A nurse came daily to give me injections and I am now on warfarin 5mg with steady INR between 2/3. My leg is still huge and I can't wear shoes because my foot is very swollen and particularly my toes which look like fat sausages! Is it normal for your foot and toes to swell like this?
Also is it normal not to be referred to a vascular clinic at the hospital? - the only treatment I receive is fortnightly INR checks and my GP really isn't interested. I feel a freak with this huge leg/foot and hideous canvas velcro boot which is the only thing i can fit on my foot. I have read that you should walk... read more

IVC filter removal problems

Hi- I am new here. I developed DVTs and PEs from pregnancy and bed
rest. They placed an IVC filter in me because I needed to go off the
Heparin to deliver and the clot was so recent and extensive. They
were supposed to remove it 6 weeks post partum (8 weeks after
insertion), but could not get it out. The doctor stopped trying for
fear he would break the filter. I have now also been told it is
slightly tilted, so one arm is embedded.

A different group of IR doctors is going to try to get it out again.
I was wondering if anyone has experience with a second attempt at
filter removal? I really want it out, but am afraid of it breaking,
since that's why the last doctor stopped. I worry he may have
weakened the metal.

My husband's leg swelled up 3x the size of his right leg - we went to the dr. who sent us for ultrasound - ultrasound showed large clots in groin - calf and behind knee - they sent him home today with injections of lovonox - and cumadin to take by mouth - and didn't give him compression stockings or anything - since when do hospitals not take blood clots and dvt serious anymore? All they said is if he has chest pain - come back to the Emergency Room and that was it.. what are others experience with this? Do you think this is normal? His leg is HUGE - and very painful - and they sent him home....

Hello,
I developed DVT after work related injury 5 months ago.I work as a cabinet maker (working with sharp tools every day and standing up for at least 8 hours/day).On the last ultra sound test there is still blood clot in my leg. The insurance company pushing me for work conditioning.I have IVC filter in vena cava and I will be on blood thinner for rest of my life. My question is should I take the risk and return to work which would be eventually dangerous for me.Thank you for any suggestions.

DVT while on tinzaparin after 10 hour flight

Hi, I recently came back from California. I was visiting my American boyfriend. I've had one prior DVT in my left thigh/groin.

The two weeks I was there, my leg had no complaints. I took tinzaparin before my flight and made sure I drank tons of water/wore stockings/walked around every hour/moved my ankles while sitting down.

We also went on a road trip to Nevada which I took tinzaparin for. Same again with rest stops, water etc.

I'm now back in the UK. On the flight back here, I slept a lot. I got up maybe 4 times during the 10 hour flight, but did move my ankles and toes a lot, and tense up the leg muscles. I also took tinzaparin and wore the stockings. However, my feet didn't reach the floor on the plane, and my leg muscles suffered as a result.

I got back on Sunday. My leg felt fine, up until Tuesday evening. During the day, I was wearing a very tight skirt and uncomfortable shoes, which I thought had irritated my leg, so put it down to that.

Now, the lower half of... read more

How often need to move legs to prevent DVT?

Hi, please help me, I'm desperate!

My Gran lived at home till last year, with no DVT. She got around with a
zimmerframe. She got taken into a care home after a fall. They stopped her using
the zimmerframe and plonked her in a chair all day with absolutely no exercise. I
was concerned about her immobility so I paid a physio to see her, but the care
home said they were too busy to do the physio's recommended chair exercises. 6
weeks after that she got DVT and was rushed into hospital. She's 92 and they put
her on Warfarin and she nearly died.

So then she had Tinzaparin and she's just come off that. My family are fighting a
battle with Social Services to get her home - they won't let us so we are now going
to court. We are extremely concerned that she might get DVT again. We want to
get her home with us and a 24 hour live-in carer.

I've read online that people flying should exercise their legs every 30 mins to
prevent DVT. I'm trying to find a... read more

DVT and possible PE?

Very nervous right now - I appreciate any feedback - I was diagnosed with a DVT
in my right leg a month ago and was in the hospital for 4 days and now on
coumadin for 6 mths. I was in a bad car accident and was in a wheel chair for 6
weeks - dr thinks due to the immobility and trauma to my right ankle caused the
DVT. I have been having sharp pains in my left chest on and off since the
accident - dr did a chest X-ray and found nothing. Today dr sent me for CT scan
of chest to rule out PE. Does anyone know if there is a possibility I could have
a PE too? Even after being treated in the hospital a month ago and being on
coumadin for over a month now?

I appreciate all feedback. :-)
