One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

Pain at Night

Hi! I was diagnosed with a clot about a month ago. Overall I am feeling better. On coumadin, wearing compression sock, elevation, blah blah blah. I have been taking Tylenol 3 but for the last few days have not taken any during the day. I have still been taking one at night to help me sleep due to discomfort. The past 4 nights I have woken up in the middle of the night with extreme pain and discomfort. To the point of not being able to sit still and crying. I don't get it because I feel fine during the day...almost no pain at all. Why does it all come crashing down at night?

calf pain-blood clot?

I have been taking Microgestin (birth control) for about three months and have had off and on calf pain. At first I thought it was from a potassium def. but I have been been eating healthier and taking vitamins daily. I am currently experiencing calf pain and am concerned it could be from a blood clot. Unfortunately I took my birth control pill for the day already then started experiencing the pain. It is not severe but feels like a charlie horse. I am going to Planned Parenthood in the morning but am feeling more and more worried. I don't have redness or swelling but I know it could still be a blood clot. I would go to the er but I have no insurance. Tomorrow morning seems like it couldn't come any sooner. What are the chances I am correct in my assumption, can I do anything tonight to help it besides elevating my leg, walking and not crossing my legs? Also, how long can these things go on until it's a life or death emergency? I assume there's no way to tell and this is worth a tri... read more

yet another DVT newbie

I was diagnosed with DVT about 2 weeks ago after nearly 2 months of severe pain in my left ankle. About a week before the diagnosis, my left ankle and calf had begun to swell up, and I was unable to walk for several days. Diagnosis came about as a result of the d-dimmer test and a subsequent ultrasound.

I was told there were 4 clots in the left leg, and 1 in the right. Most were below the knee, but not all.

I'm 42, health is so-so, and I have been pretty sedentary this winter. I will be seeing a hematologist soon to look for possible clotting disorders. There is no family history of DVT that I am aware of.

The day of my diagnosis was pretty stressful for me- this was completely unexpected, and I had no knowledge of DVT or it's treatment that would have enabled me to ask intelligent questions at the time.

Basically, I was given a shot of lovenox, 10mg of coumadin, and sent home with 4 prefilled lovenox needles and coumadin in 2 and 5mg tablets. I was put in co... read more

Been on warfarin since Sept 1st 2010. Took it for 6 months and recently was taken off of it March 1st. Been riding my mountain bike too. On the 17th my calf started to swell again. Went into ER and had them do an ultrasound. They didn't think I had a clot and said there was nothing new, but they gave me Lovenox. Called my IRadiologist on the 21st and told him my calf was hurting and I thought I had a clot. He said I didn't. Went to my Hemotologist yesterday and he rushed me in to get another ultrasound. They told me I have another clot from my calf to halfway up my thigh. My Hemotologist informed me that I am now a "lifer" with Warfarin! I am so excited, I want to throw a party! He told me in 2 to 3 years they might have a product out of Europe that is safer. Until then, Champagne wishes and Caviar Dreams and bloody cerebral hemorrhages..... ultimately we are all dead losers. It's just the "quality" of life while we are alive we try to improve. But in the end we all lose..... read more

I have left and right calf pain especially when standing, but the pain lessens and goes away once I start walking around, and I also have some pain that comes and goes in my right foot. I have also experienced pain in the back of my thigh that comes and goes as well. Does this sound like a clot? I did have an ultrasound done 2 weeks that was normal.

can it extend after 6 months?

My daughter had initial clot in femerol vein in August(7 mos ago) she is only 11.They only put her on lovenoux for 2 months, the clot extended in Feb. at the 6 month mark, prob. because they did not keep her on the medicine for 6 months. She is back on the medicine for 6 months. My question is , can this clot extend after the 6 month mark? They usually only medicate for that long does that mean it becomes encapsulated and can not form new clot in that area? She has no clotting disorders? Please help me to understand, i am so afraid of her coming off the medicine and this happening again. I think the first extension was def. because they did not keep her on it long enough(due to one of the doctors making a mistake and saying she had a duplicate femerol vein and could come off early-which was not the case)got rid of him, thanks in advance, Michelle

Advice on flying, exercise and stockings

I was diagnosed with DVT from calf to groin in November (very shortly after climbing Kilimanjaro in Africa). I am (was then) fit and 38 - maybe it was the extended time at altitude or the flight (or both). I have now stopped fragmin injections and on daily 6mg warfarin.

I have been told I cannot fly or do any exercise (other than light walking). As you can tell my interests from how I got this DVT - I would like to resume both flying and exercise as soon as it is safe!

How long do people normally have to wait before flying again? What types of exercise are safe to resume now that I am able to put weight on my leg again..?

Also I have just been given stockings to the knee only. These are ok in the day but by evening seem too tight just under the knee and leave big red marks - is this normal? Would I be better with a thigh length stocking?

Am relieved to have found this forum for my questions. As my GP sent me away twice with a calf strain before I was finally diagnosed ... read more

Hello Everyone I have never had a follow-up U/S after diagnosis of any
of my DVT's. I have been told that I have had 4. This last one was
caused by a surgery the first 3 were from either birth control or
pregnancies. I have Factor V Leiden.
I went in to get a follow-up U/S for this last DVT to be sure it was
gone so I can get off of the coumadin. I found out that this DVT was
gone but one of my previous DVT's was still there. This was one of my
major DVT's. I have had previous pain from this DVT and have had
U/S's done and each have come back negative. I have been told that
the pain has been "in my head" or "ghost" pain.
Well I have been walking around for 3 or 4 years now with this blood
clot sticking to the wall of my vein. Not knowing it was there and
not being on any blood thinners at all except for the times that I was
Does anyone know what the treatment would be at this point? Has anyone
ever had this happen to them? Help!! I feel ... read more

11 year old daughter's clot grew bigger

Hi my daughter who is only 11 just got back from the hospital yesterday. She had a dvt in her femerol vein 6 months ago that was 7 cm long. She was on lovenoux for two months instead of three because one hematologist told me she was born with two femerol veins and not to worry this clot wasn't as dangerous and there was an additional femoral vein doing its job. Well, we found out through an MRI acouple weeks ago that she only has one femoral vein, not two and that the clot has hardened to the vein and not dissolved, so this is why she now grew an additional 3.5 cm of new clot. She is back on lovenoux for probably at least 6 months, maybe longer. I feel if she was on the medicine for 3-6 months instead of just two this might not have happened. She is negative for all clotting disorders. We don't know why she got the clot. Posssibly an 8 hour car ride 3 weeks prior to the clot. Not sure if that is enough of a reason for a child to get one though.I knew the clot got bigger because she h... read more

Stopping warfrin?

I developed an extensive DVT in August following the birth of my son. I was originally put on warfarin for 6 months but as I still had swelling and pain my doctor said to stay on it while he ordered another scan. I had the scan a couple of weeks ago which slowed there is still a clot just above my thigh. My Doctor has told me that I should stop the warfarin now as it wont do anything to help me. He has refered me to a surgeon but he says he is 99% sure they wont do anything and if not he said he has discharged me from his care and we will leave things as they are as I hav had the normal treatment?. He acknowledged that leg still warm and swollen but says that the rest of the clot may break down over time? He has never mentioned stockings or anything I just wondered if any of this sounds normal? I am worried about stopping the warfarin when the scan shows that there is part of the clot remaining?

I have DVT in my right leg that was diagnosed in November of 2010. I had a two and a half foot clot in my leg, and more clotting in my calf and foot. I also had multiple bi-lateral pulmonary embolisms. I had TPA and thrombolysis done multiple times. I have been on Coumadin since November 22nd. Cleveland Clinic has tested me for every possible issue under the sun. So far everything has been negative, except one indeterminate test for lupus anti coagulant. I have an IVC filter in, that the Clinic wants to be removed now. However I see a surgeon in my home town (Youngstown) whom I really trust, and he wants to wait. They are going to test me again on May 16th for the lupus anti coagulant and if I don't have it then the Y town surgeon said he will take out the temporary IVC filter. I'm stressed!!! I agree with my surgeon here but am nervous at the same time. Anyone have a filter in? How long has it been in/when did they take it out? How long can the temporary filter b... read more

Sport after DVT

Hi, I am 25 and have just suffered DVT in my right shoulder. I have the injections in my stomach for another few days while my dosage is sorted out - it's either 1 or 2mg a day. These I will be on for 6 months. My arm is already a lot better after less than a week, and I was wondering when I can get back to running? Obviously press-ups and chin-ups are out of the question due to the placement of the DVT, and I gather sports that are likely to cut, bruise or injure me are best avoided also.

I would very much appreciate thoughts and facts on this.
Thanks in advance.

Hello! My name is Christine. I was diagnosed with a DVT about 2 and 1/2 weeks ago. They did not tell me how big it was or the exact location of it. Most of my pain has been in my groin area and thigh so I will assume that is where it is. I have basically been living on the couch with my leg in the air for the past two weeks and things have gotten better. Still lots of discomfort but things are tolerable.

Well after a couple of weeks help gets scarce and you are left alone. I have two boys a three yr old and eight month old. I am in so much pain now. Anytime I am on my feet for more than 10 mins my leg instantly blows up. I don't know what to do anymore. Tylenol isn't cutting it. I need to get back to work but if I am going to swell this bad I don't know what to do. I work at a pharmacy on my feet the majority of the time.

My treatment so far was the first week I was on Lovenox and warfarin. I am still taking the warfarin and wearing compression stockings to the ... read more
