One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

Which test is best for calf?

I've had pain, localized swelling, and numbness in my calf (and thigh) but no redness. I had an ultrasound done but the tech seemed slightly unsure of herself and was not reassuring. She said no evidence of clot. I left feeling more anxious. I went to the ER next day b/c the pain was so bad and the doc refused to do ANY testing on me, claiming ultrasound is the gold standard and that was final. I don't believe that, obviously, I've been on this forum and have read that people find out after several tests. Wondering what I should demand from the doc. A blood test? MRI? CT? Was yours missed? What was the tell-tale test?

Chest discomfort when leg swells?

Hi,

I had a massive DVT (up and down my left leg) and 'multiple bilateral' Pulmonary Emboli back in late September (2010). I'm 41, btw, and I think the cause was a lot of driving.

I have a lot of questions, but the big one on my mind at the moment is related to this:

Whenever my leg swells, I seem to get chest 'discomfort' at the same time. Sort of a pressure; I suspect it may be pulmonary hypertension.

But if I keep my leg elevated, and hence the swelling under control, my chest mostly feels okay.

So, what I'm trying to understand is whether swelling in the leg can somehow cause 'pressure' on the heart / pulmonary system? I haven't been able to find any documented direct link, but that's what it feels like: Swelling in the leg leads to 'pressure' on the heart.

Anyone else have these symptoms, or have any links to share?

Thanks,

Mike

I was diagnosed with clot in 3 veins from knee to ankle in left leg and also some clots in my lungs back in early September, how long do most people stay on the coumadin and my leg is still kinda red but the swelling comes and goes. The doctor said that they normally do not to a scan after you come off the meds. My father died after having knee surgery from a clot in his lungs. I also had knee arthroscopic surgery last March. I am afraid to not be on the meds but I dont want to take it forever if I dont have too.

Does anyone have any experiences or comments to share on long term blood thinner use where there is supposed to side effects of calcification of blood vessels due to use of comoundin /warfarin?

I am concerned that there is the possibility of arterial calcification from long term use of blood thinners that inhibit Vitamin K.

I found this info from a Life Extension article that makes raises some serious concerns!
Warfarin (Coumadin®) is an anticoagulant drug that inhibits normal vitamin K function in the body. The alarming result of vitamin K impairment is rapid development of osteoporosis and arterial calcification.21,22
Vitamin K is absolutely essential for regulating calcium balance in the body. A deficiency of vitamin K status causes brittle bones and a vascular system that hardens to a state of poor functionality.23-26
People who take Coumadin® suffer more osteoporotic fractures21 and show substantially more abnormal calcium deposition in other areas, such as heart v... read more

I don't know if anyone here can help me but for about two weeks now I have had pain in my right calf, pain behind my right knee and pain in my right groin and sometimes my groin feels hot. The pain also comes and goes. I had an dopplar ultrasound done no clots were found and I had a D Dimer test which was negative. I went to the ER again reccently and she said that it may just be a circulation problem or inflamation and gave me some anti inflamatory medicine. I don't know what to do since I don't have a doctor because i've never been sick in my life and its hard to see a doctor round here cause most places won't see new patients for 2 months.

Ceasing warfarin in favour of long term

Does anyone have any experiences to share or comment on about stopping blood thinners contrary to the suggestion from their medical doctor to be on blood thinners for life?

The reason I ask, is that my particular experience had me questioning my hematologist’s interest in taking into account or showing any interest in having me improving the factors I can control such as diet, exercise and weight loss.

The hematologist discounted my other possible causal factors such as being very over weight, sedentary, not eating right, sitting at a desk job for long hours, having suffered a respiratory illness just prior to the clot, inuring the knee that the clot occurred in and never having had a clot before.

When I tried a follow-up with the hematologist over one genetic factor that later was retested negative he refused to acknowledge any change and still wanted life long thinners for what he considered an “unprovoked” clot.

Have I just got a hematologist who is being overly cauti... read more

How soon can I fly 14 hr trip after DVT

Started February 6, 2011 at 20:46
I recently had a DVT after 3 day car trip as a result of not moving around enough during the trip. My DVT is in my calf and is 2nd DVT in same location, with previous one 8 yrs. ago. I have compromised circulation in this leg due to a fused ankle and have been told I'll now be on Warafin for life I was hospitalized for 3 days and have now been in the therapeutic range for the last 3 wks. I hope to travel on a 14 hr. flight approx. 6 wks. from now and would like some opinion on travel risks. Doctors don't seem to want to say too much in this regard. They have said I should not wear support stockings at this time as the compression may cause the clot to move.
Any comments which would help me with my travel decission would be much appreciated.

Superficial thrombosis groin

Hoping to get some answers from this forum because the doctors don't seem to
know a lot. I have horrible varicose veins as a result of genetics and three
pregnancies. Recently, I had superficial clots from in the veins in my groin right in
my right upper thigh/pubic area. I want to get all of my varicose veins removed
because they hurt, they are huge, and I am scared they will clot. Have anyone had
them removed successfully? I have read that removing them can cause dvt's. I
recently had a dvt in my subclavian vein and I am positive for factor V leiden and
prothrombin gene mutation. I am currently on lovenox and will be for a long time.
So.... I am kind of a complicated case with a variety of risk factors. But, I NEED these
veins removed. So I am wondering if anyone out there has experience with this?
Thanks!

Hi everyone following my DVT (no reason why)in my right calf 2.5 weeks
ago I was lucky that my leg was not swollen or terribly painful. The
only issue I had was warfarin as it makes me so tired. However
following excellent daily nurse visits to my home for blood tests,
pressure, temperature checks etc I have now entered the hospital after
care stage uk. I attended my first anti-coagulation clinic on Tuesday
where I had to walk the most I have done since my dvt and I found out
that my notes state I have a clot in my calf and other notes state I
have two with one in my thigh. This worried me and I am still waiting
to find out what exactly I have. My leg ached all evening from all the
walking. I had to make a separate appointment for stocking
measurements which meant another trip to the hospital and yet another
for blood tests. This left me exhausted and I have an unhappy achy
leg. I have now had a letter in the post saying I don't have to have
blood taken t... read more

Hi People. I think I have DVT, not sure because I live on a Philippine Island with very limited medical facilties, they dont even have doppler ultrasound. anyway doing a search I came up with nattokinase an enzyme found in japanese food, this enzyme has the abiltity to dissolve blood clots, has anyone tried it.
At the moment my only self treatment is going for a 4k walk every morning (it's agony)my calf swells up and the muscles are hard, but I think there's some improvement I am walking faster and it's not so painfull as when I first started.

stopping warfarin for genetic testing

hi im looking for some advice please....im on warfarin following a massive PE 10 months ago. i had major abdominal surgery 2 months prior so they are not sure if its the surgery that has caused my clot or its genetic as i previously had a DVT at 21 ?due to the contraceptive pill, and my mother died of a PE.
some specialist (who i am not familiar with) has called me today and told me to stop takng my warfarin today, as i am getting genetic testing in 7 weeks time.
im very nervous about stopping it abruptly and 7 weeks seems such a long way away to be stopping it. im usually on a high dose of warfarin aswell which makes me even more anxious. plus she said i dont need to be getting my regular blood tests when i have stopped the warfarin. Is this all normal procedure?? has anyone else experianced this??, and should i be taking something else such as a natural remedy or aspirin just in case?
