DVT deep vein thrombosis forum

One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

Swelling above compression stocking

I was diagnosed with a post-surgical left leg dvt three weeks ago.
While this femoral clot at the groin was dissolved, the swelling
continued to slowly increase. It has now stabilized, but the
swelling is substantial and the thigh-high 20/30 stockings I wear
causes blood to pool between the top of the stocking and the
groin. Just wondering if forcing the pooled blood into a small
area can be harmful to the blood vessels involved? There is a
pronounced bulging
below the groin when I wear these stocking, which is every waking
moment.

CT Scan risks

Thoughts please--

Is there a real benefit to having additional CT Scans in monitoring
the progress of clot reduction? What is more damaging, exposure to
cancer causing radiation or not knowing how far healing has
progressed? Since doctors aren't going to actually remove PE clots,
where is the benefit? Is it just how long to treat with anti-
coagulants? If you have no new symptoms, and are feeling better, is
that enough?

I was diagnosed with a dvt in my left armpit a few months ago. I am still on Warfarin, and the clot is not dissolving. I still get alot of pain when I use that arm alot, and I was wondering how long the pain and discomfort can last? I also notice that the arm is much weaker than my right. Will I regain all of my strength?

DVT while on Warafin and fighting lung cancer

My mom has been taking warafin for almost 10 years due to permanent blood clot in leg that is lodged due to scar tissue after multiple surgeries. She functions well, with a little pain but she is a strong woman so she pushes through and lives life. She now has stage 4 non-small cell lung cancer and has developed DVT. Should we keep the warafin, up the dosage, or try something new? I have read about heparin helping prevent blood clots while also slowing the progression of some lung cancers. Anyone have any information on this? We will be asking the oncologist questions at her next visit later this week but wanted to see what I could find out from others while we wait. Thanks in advance for any information you are willing to share.

Long term use of Arixtra

Sharon,

There has been a study done on long term use of Arixtra but it hasn't been released by the company. It is available to read if you go to your pharmacy and have your pharmacist request it from the manufacturer, however, they won't give you a copy. You have to read it there. I read it and it told me a little more than I already knew. It is the only thing I know that is written about long term Arixtra use. I just thought I'd mention it.

Old or new clot?

I am wondering if any one can offer some advice. I had an extensive DVT in 2010
that was caused by Yasmin (contraception pill). It started in my groin and spread
downwards, although it did eventually end up in my lungs. It's taken about 4.5
years to get my leg back to normal. Just before Christmas I went on a long
journey and my leg began to swell a couple of days later. There was no pain (like
the first time, just swelling). This freaked me out as it hasn't done this in over a
year. (After first DVT it swelled up and down for years, and felt heavy and
sluggish.). I went to the gp who referred me the next day to the hospital. I did ask
the gp if it could be pts, he did not know. At the hospital, my d dimer came back
as negative, but my US showed small clots in the groin area. However the lady
doing the scan said she couldn't tell if it were new or old as my veins were very
damaged from the first one. They put me on warfarin.

Unfortunately this time around I... read more

Can a dvt in thigh leak blood into leg?

My husband has been complaining for months his legs ache on and off. Now he
is limping and complaining his leg hurts a bit lower than mid thigh in the back of
his leg. But what is really alarming is the bruising that is showing up below pain
spot. Like something is bleeding and pooling below. Can a DVT leak blood
causing such a look? Doc thought it was his knee but c ray looked about right
for his age if 63. Getting a bit worried. He says pain comes and goes and peeks
and ebbs.

Has anyone experienced numbness and/or nerve damage due to a long lasting, but never treated dvt? My legs have both had clots- (but I they were not discovered until after the damamge had occurred and the clot had dissloved) Now I am experiencing numbness in my foot and leg all the way up to my upper thing area. sometimes when I lay down at night one or both of my legs will go completely numb -

My hubby just got out of the hospital from having a heart attack and stroke- so I can't be laid up in bed or the hospital- I have to take care of him.

has anyone had this sort of thing ?

Hi, just a brief history. On June 2nd 2016 l had a fempop bypass, hoping this was the end of my troubles turned out to be just the beginning. 11 days later l was rushed to A&E with bilateral multiple pulmonary embolisms. I was injected with Eliquis and then went onto the tablets. 8 weeks later l was back in again same thing. Problems began with bypass vein in October 2016, it was too narrow, ordered off eliquis in prep for angioplasty/stenting of the new vein. 10th January this year(2017)after 5 days off the tablets l went in ready for the procedure on 11th. By this time walking was too painful and basically impossible. They got going and then had to abruptly stop, the xray etc showed that the new vein now contained a blood clot the whole length of the vein blocking it and the craft sites off completely. They could do no more for fear of breaking up the clot whilst on the table and l will now need further major surgery. I was sent home after restarting the eliquis later that day.thi... read more

Temporary vs. Permanent IVC filters

My orthopedic surgeon wants me to have an IVC filter installed before my total
knee replacement surgery. A permanent one protects me from PEs until I die,
from embolisms. Can anyone give me any advice as to which one I should
consider? Not being able to walk is SO old. But what is the safest? I need
input from people who have been there and done that. Thanks

Unable to visualize proximal end

Hello, a couple of months ago I had a surgery involving catheters being inserted into both legs at the groin A week later I was diagnosed with a large blood clot in my left leg starting at just above the knee and extending up.

The issue is that I was unclear on exactly how far up the clot extended and talking to an ultrasound tech yesterday it was clarified that apparently the doctors don't know either!

Apparently, when I received the (2) ultrasound scans in the ER that diagnosed the clot they were unable to visualize the proximal end (i.e. the couldn't tell where the top was). They know that it extended up to the common femoral vein in the groin, and as that was the site of the surgery probably originated there.

My concern is that it seems that no one really know where the clot ends and that this means it could extend all the way to the iiliac vein of possibly even the inferior vena cava, which seems highly dangerous. Despite this being on the original report neither the E... read more

Has anyone had long term success (like many years) at preventing a recurrant
DVT by taking omega-3, vitamin E, Natto, or Rutin? I'm coming off of Warfarin
next week and am concerned about getting another DVT.
