One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

Coumadin after Thrombolysis

My ankle was swollen but it didn't hurt. I showed it to my daughter who use to work at the hospital. She suspected DVT because I had a total knee replacement just 6 months before. She called the vascular surgeon to make an appointment. They did an ultrasound and found out I had a clot from my mid calf to my pelvis!!! The doctor couldn't believe it because my symptoms were so mild. He gave me the choice of going on coumadin or dissolving it with the EKOS procedure. He said I would still have to go on coumadin for a short period of time either way. Well I already had trouble walking from my arthritis and neuropathy so I elected to have the EKOS procedure done.
Now, my vascular surgeon said I could have my PT INR drawn at his office or my primary care physicians office but he wanted it to be in the 2.5 to 3.0 range. I decided to have it done at my primary care MD office because it is more convenient but he says that a 2.0 PT INR is fine????
I'm not sure what I should do? My... read more

I had a large dvt from stomach to below knee when I was 32 weeks pregnant with twins. That was 13 weeks ago. I delivered my babies (my body broke its own water at 32 weeks because my leg was in so much pain, had an ER csection on heparin because babies lives and my life in danger.
Anyways, now my babies are doing great and are now beautiful healthy 3 month olds.
My question is?? I was in the hospital for 12 days on heparin and then released on coumadin (warfarin) which I am still taking. I will be on until January. I go in ever 2 weeks to get my INR checked. My hematologist said that it would be ok to get off in Jan? Is that okay?

I tested abnormal for c and s protein in pregnancy, but now not being pregnant anymore I am fine, with no abnormalties. If the clot is still there then why wont they keep me on coumadin until it dissolves?
They did tell me that they dont ultrasound it again. But I demanded another, and will be getting that done in Jan, but was told even if the cl... read more

Hi all. So good that we can talk freely about all topics related to dvt's and so
forth. Therefore, I would like to ask you about another delightful topic. Has
anyone else suffered with horrid diarrhoea since taking warfarin? Nothing has
changed in my lifestyle apart from less exercise and warfarin, but now find
myself rushing to the toilet on average 8 times a day!!!! My doc puts it down to
stress over my dvt, but honestly I am not that stressed over it! Thanks in

Hi all. Like many I am new to the dvt world. Diagnosed 2 days ago with 15cm
occlusion in my left calf via ultrasound. Went to the hospital as per my doctors
request, but was dumfounded by their lack of help. At the hospital they did a
physical exam by way of looking at my ultrasound report. Not one doctor nor
nurse laid a finger on me. I showed them I could inject myself, they gave me a
few warfarin tablets and told me to go back to my doctor on Monday. I asked
questions, but easily brushed off with no answers. So.... My questions are,
stockings are a must? Should I take it easy for the first few days to help prevent
a pe? Or should I walk around? Should I drive? ( I have a manual car and it
hurts somewhat). Any thoughts would be much appreciated :)

Factor II Leiden

I've read a lot about Factor V Leiden and know that it is one of the more common mutations. However, I just found out that I have Factor II Leiden mutation. In some strange way, I'm happy that it's a genetic mutation disorder . . . it means that I'm not sick! I will be on Warfarin for at least 4 more months, and will then have another ultrasound and more blood tests to determine if the clot is gone or at least mostly gone and how my levels are. These will help determine if I will go on an Aspirin a day or stay on Warfarin. (Being 25, I hope that I can go on ASP as opposed to Warfarin for the rest of my life.)

I'm just wondering if anyone else here has Factor II?

Not sure if I should go to the ER because I currently dont have a family doc. I have been having left leg pain on/off for over 3 weeks. No swelling, no redness, no warmth to touch. My leg hurts the worse when I am laying down or sitting, sometimes standing. But is comes and goes so I am not sure if it is a clot. I am on some new medication and asked the doctor who prescribed it for me if it was a side effect and he said no. Just wasnt sure if it is the meds, a clot or my back. I am on Reglan for GI issues. Thank you for your time.

My daughter was diagnosed with a dvt extending about 5 cen. in the midthigh area, on aug. 24th. she has been on lovenoux for a month now, the swelling seemed to get better, now the calf looks worse, I'm worried the clot moved or could it be a new one? i am going for a second opinion to children's hosp. in philidelphia-suppose to be good doc's, her genetic clotting disorder tests came back negative, protein c and s came back abnormal but doc. said that could be because of the clot. i had abnormal protein s, only when I was pregnant with my other daughter-my level was fine when not pregnant-so does that mean there is no genetic predisposition- I'm not sure, how else could an 11 year old get such a thing? she is an athletic girl, and we've stopped sports at this point-devastated about this, how soon can she start sports? any ideas? doc. said he may stop blood thinners in October, because it doesn't really dissolve the clot, so scared and confused plwease help me with any advise or info... read more

A friend of mine just found out she has a blood clot in her leg. They gave her
these shots in her stomach, she's new to this and wants to know how long she
will have to get these injections in her stomach. They also told her she would
probably be on some medication for at least 6 months. Anyone know how long
she has to have these shots in her stomach?

Lumps post dvt

I am 22 years old, female non smoker.

I had my second child back in April and notice a few days later I had a sore leg
so I went to the nearest a&e and got told it was a dvt in my leg.

I was put on warfarin for 3 months and that was 4 weeks ago.
I have been back for a blood test & I am back with the consultant in November.

When I was on the warfarin treatment I accidentally banged my foot on a bike
which left it bruised for a couple of weeks, since then I have noticed I have a
lump which moves around, this lump still hurts and is located in between my big
toe & ankle... But is in the place that the needle was inserted when I first had the
dye injected for the confirmation that it was a dvt back in may.

In the last week or so I have noticed that my leg hurts alot especially when I
stand up, I have found a lump that is located at the back of the knee, at the
bottom of my thigh. This is extremely painful, should I be worried?

I would be grateful for a... read more

I am not sure if I have a DVT and I am waiting for a doctors appointment. My PCP wont see me for another 3 weeks and I have other various medical problems that they are trying to figure out. My pain is in one leg, no swelling, no warm, no discoloration. I do bruise very easily. When I lay down, sit / driving my car and sometimes standing bothers me. I wear compression stockings seem to make it feel somewhat better. I have a desk job so I sit a lot. My lower back/hip is tight and just wondering if that is where it is coming from. The only medication I am on is Reglan for GI related issues. Do you think this is a clot. Been going on for about 3 weeks now. I hate to go to the ER again because I have unfortunately had to go there too much with all of my GI related issues. If anyone could please help me I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you for your time.

My doc just prescribed me darvocet for my PTS pain when it acts up and just taking Acetaminophen won't work. Anyone taking Darvocet with Warfain together...or see any problems? I googled it and some results say be careful taking them together. Can't tell sometimes because seems like anything you take they have a list of possible problems. My doc is the one controlling my warfarin treatment, so guess he thinks it's ok. Has anyone heard of, or is currently taking it with warfarin and if so are you ok with it?

First I want to thank everyone for their replies to my initial thread. Thank you so
much for taking the time to read our story and respond. Your support means a
great deal.

My husband is on his 11th day of Lovenox (100mg/2x) and Coumadin 7.5mg. On
thursday he'll get his INR tested. Doc decided to keep him on Lovenox until INR is
How long can one be on Lovenox??

Also, he is getting small red spots (petechaie) on his leg. I will call the doc in the
morning. They are smaller than the diameter of a pencil. Has maybe 5-6 of them.
Do you think his INR is too high now?

A concern of hubby's is about arousal --- could medications affect that?
He is stressed and depressed, so that alone is enough to contribute to that cause.
