One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

I'm 36 and just got my first DVT in June 2010 from being on birth control for only a year. I decided to get on birth control because I was dating someone. Now that I have this health issue he decided to break up with me. This summer has been very hard. Can't do much. Especially at the early stages of therapy. The swelling started in my right foot. My heal was swollen for two weeks. One morning I woke up with a charlie horse in my right calf. The clot traveled from my foot to behind my knee. I was on levonox injections twice a day for two weeks. Now I'm on warfin 10mg a day. My doctor never suggested a stocking. I'm gonna look into it. My ankle is always swollen especially at the end of the day. My doctor is hoping to take me off the warafin after 3 months. I have my 3rd ultrasound appointment scheduled for September to see if the clot has dissovled. My Doctor mentioned to me yesterday there is a chance I can get another clot in my leg within a year after being off of the wa... read more

Hi everyone - just found this site - it is very informative.

I had a dvt last year and did the 6 months of warfarin. Touch wood so far so good since being off it. Unfortuately I do still suffer with some pain etc and whilst I was on warfarin obviously I couldn't take ibuprofen. However, I would like to know if it is ok to have it now and if it would help ease the pain I have with regards to the after effects of the dvt.

just interested to know this. I was diagnosed with 2 clots a year ago, one small one in my left groin
that has improved a little, but the bigger one in my right leg from knee to groin, is still pretty much
clotted with decent blood flow but has grown 2 new collateral veins to compensate, hence nonpain,
swelling or discoloration since .
can anything be done a year on or is this something that I have to live with.
I'm waiting to see my hema Dr to get results of bloodwork & to find out if I need to stay on coumadin
any advice would be great.
btw I feel great , keeping weight down, swimming, walking, staying hydrated etc.
much love x

INR and Diet

I find it really interesting that none of you have questioned your diet regarding your INR.

Close to 5yrs ago now, at the age of 36, my husband had aortic valve replacement (mechanical) and will be taking Coumadin for the rest of his life. This is to stop the blood from coagulating on the valve. When we first heard about greens being an issue, the antidote to Coumadin, I was in a bit of a tizzy. I thought about what he was going to eat; do I have to make separate meals for him, etc. This is not at all the case.

I recently (two weeks ago) experienced a DVT in my right leg. I did not have any swelling, redness or heat in the area. It just felt like I had a charlie horse in my calf, without ever getting the charlie horse! Went through all the steps of injections for 7days and now, I to have to take Coumadin every day. Once the DR. decides to take me off Coumadin they will test me for "sticky blood" and other possible factors like L5, that has also been mentioned in the forum.

Hi all, I have not been here before so will quickly give a summary. I am 30 years old and had a DVT in January after my daughter was born. I was on Warfarin for 3.5 months so have been off it now for about 3 months. I have not had ny pain at all until now. I can feel some pain in the same area as I had my DVT before. I am wondering if I should leave it to see if it gets worse for a bit as I know you can get pain after a DVT anyway. At the moment it is really not that bad but I can feel it IYKWIM - Also when I palpate it it hurts. I don't have any other reason to get another DVT and it seems a very short time afterwards.
I had a Thrombophilia screen a few weeks ago (I dont know what the results were) and have an appointment to see the haematologist at the end of August.
What do you think?
Many thanks

Hey all...a google search brought me here, hopefully you guys can help me out.

I have a DVT in my calf following a knee surgery. No one told me to get up and move after the surgery to prevent a clot, so I just kind of laid around. Anywho, its pretty painful and it really hurts to stand or walk..but the Dr. tells me I should be walking on it...is this safe? I'm scared I am going to dislodge it or something...They give me a heparin shot once a day as well as I take warfarin once a day. Im a 25 year old who is otherwise in good health...a bit heavy, but I just had a baby a while ago, so I'll blame that on that LOL. Thanks for any help and any insight you are able to give me....as well as when will the pain go away? Cause man, this hurts. Thanks.

Question for John in Dallas

I live in Dallas. Recently, I was diagnosed with clot from groin to ankle in left leg. They removed the clot from groin to knee with as emergency surgery with success! However, 2-3 days later in the hospital the clots from knee to ankle moved into the knee to groin vein. 3 weeks later, I still have lots of pain and swelling in the groin to knee. Vascular Surgeon waiting to see if body will absorb the clots. No good reason on not performing a repeat procedure to remove the clots?

Would your doctor repeat the procedure to remove the "new" groin to knee clots? Again, pain, swelling, and want to minimize dysfunction of leg as I'm only 48 and active.

Hello, I was diagnosed with DTV on my brain last May (Deep Venous Sinus Thrombosis). I live in Florida and I am planning to go to Europe on August. I saw in other posts that many people were discussing about the risks and precautions of flying with DVT in the legs. Does anybody know about the risks of flying with a DVT on the head? any advise, experiences or comments? Thank you.

I have Antiphosholipid syndrome (Hughes Syndrome) On Clexane 120mgs
The haematologist doesn't want to keep me on it due to the risk of oesteoporosis. I have been on warfarin, But it didn't help my symptoms
which are mainly brain fog, depression memory loss. I also had a heart attack due to a clot.
Several late miscarriages, low birth weight son 1lb 14 oz(who is now 29 and about to have a child of his own. DVT. I am about to have the Anti-Xa blood test. It might be interesting to check out the Hughes syndrome web site.
I think Antiphospholipid syndrome is more common than they think.
I am frightened of getting oesteoporisis but the alternative is awful,

DVT questions new here

Hi everyone
Very long story short. I had a DVT, illiac to poppiliteal, when I was 32 weeks pregnant with twins. Went into labor naturally since I was in so much pain and I had an ER csection while on heparin(no other choice.)
Everything turned out fine with my babies, and I was in the hospital for 11 days on heparin released when I was therapeutic on coumadin, and am now keeping my INR between 2-3.
Of course I am always worried that it will spread, but am trusting God and staying on my warfarin. My question is I dont know what I can and cannot do. The doctors say that I can do anything, since it is now encapsulated. But...I treat that leg (my left) as it is very very fragile. I always put it up and dont even drive yet, as this just happened 4 weeks ago. I am even cautious about walking on it. I was told that I will be on warfarin for 6 months.
I did test positive for the c and s protein factor, but again will be retested in 4 weeks since I was pregnant when they tested me, and ... read more

Hi everyone,

I used to post a lot in the past and got away from it about a year and a half ago.

If you read my old posts you will see that I had an extensive dvt in my left leg in Jan 08 and had intervention surgery. The clot was old (nearly 3 mos) and went from knee to groin. The outcome of the surgery was very questionable at the time because the clot was so old. Well it worked very well for me because I obtained complete recanalization of the veins, and I was able to do resume a normal life without any real swelling or discomfort. Yes the leg will swell even today without compression hose and feel heavy because of valvular incompetence. It is what it is, and I have had no real problems with it. In other words, the leg has remained a constant even though it is not exactly perfect.

Life was great and I was able to get off anticoagulants in Sept 08. However, in Mar 09 I ran into a weight bench with the other leg and developed a dvt in the popliteal vein. Because of past e... read more

Hello all,

Thanks to all for posting your experiences with DVT it is a great informational resource.

My issue is i recently came back from a trip to TX from NYC and for the past week i have had sorness in my left calf. The airplane ride was only 3 1/2 hrs and did about 4-5 hrs of driving a day while i was there. I went to the urgent care facility here and they performed a sonogram scan of both my legs and they said the readings were Negative and just to take moltrin. It seemed they were so busy that day with patients that i am not convinced they looked at the results carefully because as of now i still feel a sharp pain behind my upper calf right below the knee. I do not have any swelling or discoloration just sorness/stiffness as if i worked out.

I did not do any very physical activities while i traveled that would cause muscle pain. Never had a surgery and im young 23yrs old male active and healthy. I scheduled a appt with a Vascular physician on Wed which is 5 days awa... read more

Skin Tenderness

Hi everyone,
I had a knee op about 8 weeks ago and developed dvt a few days later. I'm now on warfarin for six months. My leg has gone back to near enough it's original size but the skin around my calf is very tender to the touch. I'm just wondering if anyone else has suffered the same?

Also I'm only 26 but since I was 13/14 I developed two nasty looking varicose veins at the back of my knee. Does anyone know if this is linked to developing a dvt?

Dvt Reoccurance

I suffered with a massive dvt in my thigh and pelvis whist being 28weeks pregnant in 2005/2006. After taking numourous medications perscribed i was fine by the end of 2006. However, this weekend my leg started to swell and has become very painful. After a visit to the hospital, i was sent for a ultrasound. After a very brief test, in which the lady testing only looked at my thigh, it showed that i haven't got another dvt. I'm worried that something may have been missed. last time i had the same ultrasound i was in the room for a good 20 mins. this time i'd say 5mins! They have offered me no disgnoses as to why my leg is still swollen and no advice or treatment, just sent me on my way. I'm not sure what to do next...Any advice i would really appriciate!! Thanks!!

Hi folks, I've read this forum since I had my first DVT in july 2007.That time it took nearly 6 weeks before they found the clot. I had everything from a sprained ankle, you don't sprain your ankle and get this much pain and not remeber doing it, to it just needs some rest and take these painkillers. Then a doctor does some blood tests and tells me that if I don't hear from them in two hours get these drugs because its a bakers ciste. Three hours later my mobile rings in the chemist and it's the hospital and they will send an ambulance to collect me and if I could try not to die before it arrives that would be good ! Get to the DVT clinic and it all changes they are great, but they know how dangerous it is and tell you the facts and the treatment. Six months of warfarin and I hope thats it but three months later and my right legs painfull. Because I've been discharged from the DVT clinic I have to go the A&E route. Another five weeks and they have ruled everything bar a DVT. My D dim... read more
