One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

Possible other dvt cause

I've had two dvts and don't test positive for any of the causes. I recently found out I had a fractured long bone in my foot and was tested for vitamin d. I am very deficient. I've been taking supplements and my levels have improved, but my INR levels also went up. I went from 2.0 to 4.4 with the same dose of warfarin. My theory is that because calcium needs vitamin D to be absorbed, if it isn't absorbed it's just running around in the blood waiting to clot. Calcium is a known clotting factor. I'd be interested if any one else without the traditional reasons to get a dvt also test low for vitamin D levels. Mine was 12.

I was diagnosed with DVT a year ago and been on warfarin since then. I live overseas where they have done some of the key blood tests, but suggested I find a very good specialist in the US to complete detailed genetic blood tests for Factor V, Protein S an C, etc.

Does anyone know of a good DVT specialist in the SLC, Utah area? I'm here for a month.

Comfortable Compression Stockings

I received word today that the follow-up scan revealed that all of the clots, deep and superficial, were gone from my leg and I can stop taking the coumadin--great news, but I'm also a little frightened. I have been searching for comfortable stockings to fit my leg. I ordered some mediven open-toe extra wide calf-high stockings (in PETITE length) from compressionstockings.com and, when I tried them on today, they fit perfectly. I thought I would pass this information on in case there's anyone else out there with short legs with calves unproportionally larger than ankles.

I was diagnosed with DVT in right leg from illiac to popaliteal (sp??) about 2 weeks ago. I was pregnant with twins, and went to hospital with leg discoloration.
My water broke since I was in so much pain from my leg and I had 2 beautiful daughters June 22nd via ER csection under general. They are doing fine and were born at 33 weeks. I was in the hospital for 11 days on heparin and was released when my inr was 2.0 (last friday)
I am now home on 5mg of warfarin. My last week in the hospital (didnt have this when I was admitted). I started having chest discomfort and mild shortness of breathe (was already on heparin). Anyways was given a spiral CT scan in hospital and it was clear/normal.
I am now home and I still have the same feelings in my chest. I can breathe its just discomfort and pressure (a little shortness of breathe). I just got the CT scan less than a week ago. But am freaked.
I now have 2 beautiful babies to take care of, and am so confused. I now will go weekly to ch... read more

I have had two children and because of that, I have gotten varicose
[sp?]veins. Lately, off and on, I have experienced pain in my right leg,
itching and a 'hole' like area on the back of my knee with sweeling
redness. I have been to the doctor before it once and he advised I get
special stalkings and never took the advice. Could this be DVT?

Post-Warfarin Lifestyles

I stopped taking Warfarin last night

I am just wondering what you guys do to stay healthy post-Warfarin, in an effort to avoid another clot.

My doctor suggested I take an aspirin every day...which I don't understand, since venous clots are caused by fibrin and not platelets sticking together...DOES aspiring have some affect? I suppose if it makes you bood cells more slippery...that's not a BAD thing.

I priced 60 capsules of Nattokinase at Whole Foods for about 22$ last time I was in there...I know their affects have yet to be studied throughly and probably never will be, but, once again, if it does no harm, why not.

If I take aspririn, I probably shouldn't take nattokinase and vice versa right?

Beside exercise, what else do you guys do? HAve you changed your diets?

I wanted to get all prepared to go off...but it literally snuck up on me.

I will go in next week for a D-Dimer, CBC and basic metabolic panel, then in early August to get the rest of my blood tests... read more

So, it's been 6 months since I was diagnosed with a DVT in my left leg and put on coumadin. A re-scan is scheduled in a couple of days to see if the clot is gone and how much damage has been done. I am so nervous...I am hoping to be able to get off of the coumadin and put this experience behind me. Although my friends are caring, and they try to understand, I knew that many people on this forum can absolutely understand where I'm coming from.

Can you see a blood clot move?

Earlier today I tensed my left arm and noticed something bulge through my muscle, at first I thought it was some lump on my muscle and went to prod it and couldn't feel anything, it happened that quickly that I'm not sure if I imagined it or what (pretty sure I didn't), or whether it was some muscle twitch or something, then there was nothing there. My question is, is it actually possible to see a blood clot move through your veins, and if so and it could well have been...would I have experienced the potentially drastic consequences by now? I don't seem to have the classic symptoms of a blood clot on my arm, other than the blotchy redness that appears on both my arms due to my circulation and anxiety (and as you can imagine I'm now quite anxious!) Thanks.

How long did it take to be able to walk again?

I was admitted with a DVT (above knee to ankle) 2 weeks ago. After 6 days in the hospital, I was released. I am 39 and haven't been given any 'reason' for the DVT. The swelling and pain have decreased, but I am still in pain and find it difficult to sleep and impossible to walk (I'm using crutches or a walker to keep from using it). My doctor seems concerned by this and has prescribed pain killers, but hasn't offered any advice for improving the situation, scheduled follow-up appointments, mentioned compression stockings, or referred to a specialist. I know that situations vary widely, but I wondered how long is 'normal' to regain mobility? Do you have any advice for working towards walking or preventing PTS?

flying with clexane

Hi all
I had a DVT and multiple PE in April last year caused by birth control pill, which I have since stopped taking. I have no other risk factors. I Was on Warfarin until Dec. Have had no problems since.

I am going on a 9.5 hr international flight in a few weeks. I have compression stockings to wear and my doctor has prescribed clexane injections. My question relates to the dosage of clexane.

My doctor said I should have one 60ml injection the night before my flight, another one 12 hours later (a few hours before boarding), and then a third injection 12 hours later (about an hour before landing). Are 3 injections necessary? Is it enough to just have one a few hours before the flight?

any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

All the questions you have been asking and I have no answers for so I called my dr office and got a copy of my doppler. It reads: Cardiac ablation procedure on week ago via venous access in the right groin with right groin pain.

Technique: Compression sonography was performed in the right lower extremity.

Findings: At the level of the proximal right common femoral vein there is a thin layer of thrombus on the anterior wall of the common femoral vein which prevents complete compression of the vessel. There is flow through the vein. The femoral vein and the popliteal vein are completely normal.

Impression: There is anterior wall thrombus only in the right commom femoral vein not producing occlusion of the vein.

Does this mean anything to you at all. I appreciate any info you can give me. I'm thinking if there is still blood flow than the clot must be of a smaller size. Thanks so much Dawn

I had bloodwork done last week, and two days later was sent a letter to pay my Dr a visit "at my earliest possible convenience".

Evidently I'm a mutant. :D

Turns out that I have both a genetic mutation which increases my risk of developing DVT, and a high homocysteine level which puts my cardiovascular risk from the genetic mutation into a high risk level. The mutation is the methylenetetrahydrofolate (MTHFR) Gene Mutation (C677T), and apparently 8-18% of the population has this mutation.

I guess there's a good possibility I'll be on warfarin for the rest of my life, and Vit B and Folic Acid are supposed to reduce my homocysteine level.

The test for this is a simple blood test which tests for both MTHFR and Homocysteine. If you haven't found out a cause for your DVT yet, talk to your Dr about getting this test done. Who knows ... you might be a mutant too. :D
