DVT deep vein thrombosis forum

Welcome to the DVT deep vein thrombosis open discussion forum. Please feel free to start a new topic or reply to any existing topics. No need to register to use this forum. Just feel free to share your experiences of DVT.

One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

Hi :)
What's considered to be an average size of a dvt ?
What is classed as being a small DVT compared to a large one ?
And how big does a DVT have to be to cause damage to the lungs ?

Hi everyone. Im Jacob, age 29. After the last DVT in January 2012 (4th
in my life) I was put on warfarin for a life-time. I was also advised
to wear those bloody compression stockings. Everyone says they are a
must, and they do the job. But I just cannot wear them.

I got one in Poland and I could not wear it at all. It caused a pain.
The skin around my ankle is already very soft and I felt very
uncomfortable after 20 minutes of wearing that bloody sock !

And now Im living in the UK... they gave me another sock. The leg was
measured etc. but unfortunately it is the same thing. Pain and pain.
It makes more pain than it is without that stocking.

Has anyone experienced that as well ? What should I do? If I don't
wear that stocking, is it gonna be more harmful for me ?

Pls help !

Hi there, my husband has been on Warfarin for just over 6 months and is on 10mg - INR now at 2.8.

Do you come off it cold turkey or do you gradually come off it? The doctor also told him to stop wearing his stocking.

I would appreciate any advice from anyone who has come off the Warfarin and what to expect! Kind Regards, Donna Robertson

Compression Stockings - wear to sleep?

I was prescribed grade 1 compression stockings because of the DVT I had in May. The doctor told me to make sure I put them on first thing in the morning, after my shower, and that I can take them off when I go to bed, or otherwise if I'm laying down and can keep my legs elevated.

My question: Can I wear them while I sleep? Or are there negative side effects from wearing compression stockings 24 hours a day?

I only ask because a couple of times I was just too tired at night to take them off before sleeping.. you know how difficult those things are to put on and take off. When I wake up in the morning my legs and ankles feel stiff, but on those nights where I didn't bother removing my stockings, I woke up with my legs feeling a little itchy at the top of the stockings, but otherwise fine and free of stiffness.

Cayenne and molasses for bleeding

I just posted about this but it seems to have disappeared. I was terrified to take blood thinners (xarelto) because of the reading I did here at this forum. I wanted to tell everyone and encourage everyone to try what I have been doing. I was on my period when I started the blood thinners but by taking 3 cayenne capsules daily and 2 Tablespoons of black strap molasses every morning, I have not bled once while on the blood thinners. I have only been on them for about a week now but already, my leg has stopped hurting and no menstrual bleeding. I took cayenne after the birth of several babies (gave birth at home) to keep from bleeding out and it always worked very quickly to stop heavy bleeding. I believe that, in combination with the black strap molasses, is why I have stopped bleeding. Plus black strap molasses has potassium and iron, which is good for us who are anemic anyway (like me). I thought I would tell everyone here because some of you seem so desperate to stop your lengthy ... read more

Thrombosis but no swelling??

I know this might seem kind of stupid, I've only had symptoms for like 36 hours, but I have exams coming up and I won't be able to deal with any of that from then on so i'd like to get this clear.

I'm 20, don't smoke, don't take the pill... But my great grandmother had thrombosis (don't know much about that)

Anyway, I haven't left the house for 5 days, been revising, mostly in bed...
Woke up yesterday morning with a sore calf, which I thought was a little odd.
Anyway, as the pain was still there today I checked it out and saw it might be thrombosis...

Basically, here are my only symtoms:
- small bump on the inner side of my calf / hurts to touch
- can't point my toes up
- can't cross my legs
- hurts when i walk
- pain comes from that bump, goes up to under my knee
- my leg sometimes feels weird, it goes up my thigh too sometimes
- i can feel it when my leg is at rest

that's about it.. no redness, not swollen.. and honesly the pain isn't that bad.

Alongside the killing of my cancer cells, which is the most important factor to me, RSO cannabis oil also helped with pain and nausea. Indeed, the quality of my life improved all around. Thanks to Rick Simpson Oil which i procured And, with my growing experience along side expanding clinical trial data, I find myself more and more confident in RSO cannabis oil and I'm now CANCER FREE and thus sharing this statement. If you are a victim of severe cramping, legs, hands, etc., carry a
bottle and spoon with French's Mustard. When cramp starts, take a
couple spoonfuls of Mustard. Drink a couple swigs of water, the cramp
will stop in a little over 60 seconds. Try it. Doesn't taste real
good, but saves the pain.
I think it is the Organic Turmeric, organic paprika, organic Mustard
seed and organic vinegar.
The Amish use a combination of Vinegar, Garlic and Turmeric.

What is an "Old Blood Clot"??

Im 27, I've had 2 Pulminary Embolisms or P.E.'s about 8 or so years ago, they did a scan of my legs to see if they could find a DVT to explain the P.E. however at the time they didn't find anything, after a few blood tests and a few days later they determined I had a clotting disorder called a Factor 5 Diffeciency or something to that effect. A few weeks ago I got a bruise on my leg from doing something maybe a little foolish but I'm a carpenter and I get bruises all the time, the bruise seemed to be getting better, didn't hurt very much and then 3 days ago my calf swelled up and was really painful....as a result of that I went to the Emergency Room having a history of blood clots I figured it would be a good idea to get check out, so they did an ultrasound of my calf and all the way up my leg etc...the ER Dr. told me that they didn't find any "new" clots however they did see a few "old" clots in my leg probably from my previous DVT/PE's.

My question is this:

What the heck is... read more

I know that most people with dvt have quite serious swelling but im very

About 3 weeks ago i started getting stabbing pains in my calf that didn't go
It felt like bad cramps and went from the top of my foot to my knee back and
front pain. Trust me i went to 4 doctors who pretty much rolled their eyes at
me and said i can't have a dvt at 20 (which i think is bs)

I begged all of them for an ultrasound like literally begged for a d dimer test
and they sent me home with paracetamol and no explanation.

The pain has slowly moved and is now in my groin - a very dull ache that is
tender to touch and the inner thigh has a patch of swelling :/
It really really hurts. I mean have you ever heard of cramps lasting for 3 weeks
in the thigh?

Well im in tears right now because of the pain and this swelling is freaking me
out. I've never had pain that lasts for 3 weeks and only gets worse.
Im very concerned this is an undiagnosed dvt and the worst thing... read more

I had colon surgery 3 weeks ago. I was up and walking the next day. Two weeks
ago I had calf pain at night and a little during the day. Last week I went for follow
up and they did an ultrasound from my groin to my ankle. They found nothing. I
still have calf pain but no redness or swelling and its intermittent. Should I trust
the ultrasound at this point. I am still nervous.

So I saw my doctor yesterday morning who quickly sent me for an ultrasound, still haven't heard the results though the nurse told me if there was a clot they wouldn't let me go home. But can an ultrasound miss a clot? Because last night everytime I got up and walked and then sat down my right groin, knee, and foot hurt really bad and this morning I noticed tightness in my calf when I walk.

When is it OK to return to work?

Hi everyone. I am totally new to this area and am struggling to get information. Brief history is that 2 weeks ago I was diagnosed with bilateral lower limb DVT and bilateral pulmonary edema. I was started on Fragmin injections with coumadin whilst I was in hospital but then when I went home it was just the coumadin. I am only 40 and have a hectic physical job and a 3 hour commute to and from work each day. I know it is all individual but I'm just trying to get a handle on how long most people tend to have to stay off work for. The doctors are still trying to stabilise my INR - last night it dropped to 1.6 so I had to go to the hospital to get a Fragmin shot and they doubled the coumadin dose to 6mg. Any help/advice for a newbie would be very gratefully received. Thanks :)
