One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

My mother is diagonsed with liver cancer in January, 2010 and after having several operations she seems to be recovering. But since yesterday their is too much swellen and pain in her leg, Doctors have told that this is because of blood clotting and now she is in hospital for treatment, her age is 50 years. Can any one tell me does this blood clotting is cureable or not and how long does it take for her to come back from the hospital and what precautionary measures are required? Is it life threatning ? I live in Dubai and my mother is in Pakistan so doesnt have access to all the names of medicines which the doctors are giving to her rite now but she is under observation in hospital.

Does the cancer has any thing to do with this blood clotting ?

Any advice or details about this disease will be helpful. plz email me at

I wear them from waking and take them off 12 hours later daily. Is that enough? Also I heard that you can wear them in bed and if you do,you don't have to have your leg elevated during sleep. Is this true?

Many Thanks

Hi, I had my period early this month, And at first thought it was Implantaion bleeding but it went for 4 days and for 2 days it was quite heavy like a period the other 2 days it was light pink and brown and very light. I was just wondering can wafrian make you have a heavyer implantaion bleed then normal?
I have been on wafrian for 2 years in september.
I usually have very regualr periods thats why i was a little concerned when I got it a week early.
But now a week later Im getting tired all the time, And have tender breasts. Has anyone had a heavyer implantaion bleed? Or was it just my period? Thanks for any replys.

"DVT nearly killed me - a week after I stepped off the plane"

Like most of us, Paul Taylor assumed blood clots only develop straight after a flight. It was a mistake that almost cost his life

My blood runs cold to think what might have happened if I hadn’t dialled 999,’ says Sarah Taylor of the moment she discovered her husband, Paul, collapsed on the sofa.

Despite his protests that she was being melodramatic, she insisted on calling an ambulance.

It saved his life — for, although Paul had only felt mildly unwell for a few hours, he could have died. The cause? A long-haul flight.

It was the night of the couple’s joint 40th birthday party in July 2008, not long after they’d returned from a holiday to Las Vegas — a birthday treat to themselves.

2nd DVt from FV leiden

So it is customary I guess to prescribe coumadin for the rest of the patients life if they have had two DVT's. I am hetero, my father has had two DVT's and is on blood thinner for the rest of his life. I am not sure when I got the first clot. We assume it was after my ATV accident when I was 16. i broke my femur (ouch) and had a rod put inside of it. They did put my on Lovonox for 1 month after wards. That was in 2000. In 2008 I was pregnant with my son, at 7 months gestation I started having problems with my leg (we knew at this point I had FV leiden) A Doppler was performed and found DVT #1. It is considered chronic, there is so much scar tissue it has not moved. Thank God! apparently it is huge, I certainly would be dead. Anyway I went on blood thinners for 6 months, the clot did not change I came off, things are fine. Fast Forward to this past February. I has surgery on the same leg, this time my ankle. To remove a benign tumor. I was on crutches for 1 month Arixtra for only two... read more

I'll try to keep this concise. 29/F, over weight (but have lost 60 pounds in last year so it is being addressed), smokes 1/2 pack a day (cut down from full pack/day) but no other medical issues. Last full exam by GP was around September. I recently started working out again, walking anywhere from 3 to 5 miles a day. After 3 days of rest woke up with a pinching sensation in the crease of my knee, on the medial side. Not excruciating, just noticeable upon full extension. Then I became hyper-vigilant I guess. Noticed that my thigh had a strange pulling sensation later that night and had intermittent odd sensations in my shin. The pain never reached a 4, there is no obvious swelling that I or my husband can tell, no warm spots or discoloration. 4 days later while grocery shopping it felt as though it wanted to spasm but I was able to walk it off. Next day walked 5 miles in flip flops on the beach and no pain what so ever.
So basically, what I'm trying to figure out is, can a blood cl... read more

Disappointing news

Well, I just came from an appointment with my hemotologist and came away with very disappointing news. She said that the likelyhood of my leg ever getting any better from this point forward is not probable. I suffered an extensive DVT July 2009 (9 months ago) which extended from my left groin to ankle. I was also diagnosed with Lupus Anticoagulent. During all of this time I have for the most part kept a positive attitude, and have worked hard through exercise, wearing of stockings, etc., to help my leg heal. I still have a lot of discoloration from poor circulation, but kept up my hopes that if I continued to exercise, wear the stockings, and keep working at it, that the leg would slowly but progressively get better. Now I'm being told not to expect it to get any better, but instead to keep working at it not getting any worse. Is that all that I can expect? It's hard not to get down and depressed at this point.

I have a DVT as a result of back surgery. No family history of DVT. also have been on Warfarin since 4 days after surgery. Recently found out besides the DVT in my left leg (which can't be corrected need to wait for blood to redirect to other veins) that my iliac vein across my abdomen is also clogged due to the rod in my back for my recent back surgery. My INR's were good for many months after and now there all over from 1.0 to 5.5 then down to 2.1 then 7.8. At 7.8 my tongue turned purple, so did under my toenails. Diet is good. No change to medications, etc. Going every 3 days for INR.

Risks of clot coming back again and again?

Hi all,

I broke my leg last year in October and following a comedy of errors by my local hospital I ended up having a serious clot in my leg for around 3 weeks which all the while they thought was just ongoing bruising from my break. Once diagnosed (clot went from ankle to below the knee) i was put on warfarin and in March following a scan was given the all clear and taken straight off warfarin but was not told to take aspirin or anything else. Another concern was the specialist who had been treating me those three months informed me the stocking I was wearing (which he had seen on 4 previous occasions) was not tight enough and didn't do anything for me and finally prescriped a tighter stocking.

3 weeks later (April 1 of all days lol, gotta laugh... :( ) I had a pain in my calf and got checked and sure enough my clot had come back and was fortunately only 4cm in the calf). The believed I may have been taken off Warfarin too early and should have been on it for 6 months but ... read more

I was on here right after my diagnosis in March but it looked like all posts were older so didn't write.
I was diagnosed in March with extreme DVT. It goes from my ankle to just about my groin. Within two days of finding it, it went to my lung. Two pieces broke off ( PE's) and because I had an appointment in two days I ignored the symptoms and figured I could wait. Wow,what a boob I am..L My doctors tell me I am lucky to be alive. I was shocked at that time to really feel it is as much an emotional shock as well as a physical one. I thought I could deal with it alone and not have to really explain it to anyone. Wrong! But yet when I did, I am a hairdresser, I lost business over it.
I am still dealing with doctors to find out the reason. We now have a team of a cardiologist, hemotologist, and my rheumatologist. And of course my GP. I don't fall under any of the criteria, and no blood disorders found. other than my size (overweight) and my job , we are totally stumped. They are ... read more

Diagnosed Extensive DVT

Thank you for your excellent information on the website!

I was diagnosed with dvt Friday 7th May after suffering for 2 months I only just got my scan then as the doctors did not suspect a clot as I am classed a low risk, male, 37, normal weight and have never flown in my life.

The clot has spread to my thigh so I am on medication now with the injections. I know the risks of a dvt but do I still need to worry now that I am on the medication? Does the medication of coagulant prevent it from breaking off?

I cringe at the thought of bending my leg in case it aggravates the clot to break off!! Is this irrational thinking?

I had a very high diet of broccoli and spinach and olive oil and I wonder if these high vitamin k foods caused it? I also take 8 different vitamin pills daily.

My job involves standing for up to 12 hours a day which the nurse advised I should no longer do which is an ironing service.

Sorry for bombarding you with all these questions!! But this is ... read more

I'm a 37 year-old male, and I was diagnosed with DVT on Monday. The previous Wednesday I felt like there was some type of muscle strain from near my groin all the way down to the bottom of my calf. It took me until Monday (this week) to finally go in to see my doctor. He did not think I had DVT since my leg wasn't swollen up and discolored. He was not going to send me for more tests, but I insisted. Good thing I did.

After an ultrasound it was determined that I had a clot the ran the full length of my right leg. I explained that I had been having shortness of breath, so they did a CT scan which revealed several broken off clots in my lungs. I had a PE and didn't even know it.

I was admitted to the hospital and was initally put on heparin while they did a massive amount of blood tests. I have had to take 2 shots in the stomach instead of one on account of my size. Nontheless, after 5 days in the hospital my INR level has essentially not moved. I started on coumadin a ... read more

I experienced a DVT/PE ten years ago. At the time, the Doctor inserted a Bird Nest Vena Cava filter. I discovered last week that the filter is clogged with an old blood clot most likely from an (ACL repair 5 years ago). I never had any symptoms and was unknown until last week.

Does anyone have any advice or experience on the protocol to handle an occluded vena cava filter?

i had a dvt just over a year ago, i got the chicken pox from my nephew (i am now 26) so as you can imagine i was very very ill, i carried on taking my contraceptive pill and as a result of being in bed and the pill i got a dvt in my right lower leg(just above the ankle). i was on warfarin for 3 months. the pain was unbarable and i still shudder when i think about it now. unfortunately i have now developed sciatica in my left leg which is very scary as i get calf cramps which bring back horrible memories but i have been reassured it is not a dvt. 2 days ago i am now getting cramp in my right calf, it is not red or swollen just tender. to cut a long story short, what are my chances of getting a secondary dvt? i was told by the dr it was a one off because of how i got it ( i can never take the pill again), im going to the drs tomorrow but mu anxiety is taking over right now its all i can think about! please can anyone shed any light on this matter, i am a little overweight but graduall... read more

Im 27 year all female, DVT was found 2 days after coming home to SA from my honeymoon in April 09,,
i had a very sore right "knee" leg and thought I had sprained it,
Landed up in hospital just for a night, had clexane? Injections for two weeks and I’m on warfarin for the next 6 months.

I wasn’t 100% sure if I was experiencing any side effects, till yesterday, after finding your posts

From about 12pm my left side of my Jaw went numb, kind of tingly numb the same numbness you experience
When you have had an injection at the dentist and a hour or two later the “feeling” starts coming back to your mouth,

I freaked out a bit landed up trying to call the doctors office, eventually I got hold of him and explained
And he didn’t seem concerned at al he said that it’s not a side effect of warfarin and if I’m worried I should come see him,
( of course I was worried why does he think I freaking phoned him)
I told him if I still have a numb feeling in the morning ill go.
