One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

Hi, i noticed a cyst like abcess when flexing by my calf around a month and a half ago. At first I thought it was a harmless cyst but after going to the doctor it was described as "bouncy" and possibly a vein. After showing my mom she told me that she believed it was a blood clot. My insurance has just expired and I am in a slow process of renewing it so I could not get the tests done on it to verify clot. But I suspect it's getting more severe and i'm utterly confused on what to do. I'm only 18, and I have no reason to form a blood clot other than waitressing at a bar. It has halfed size since I went to a doctor but I am started to form vercoise veins and they look like major veins. I know that it gets more dangerous as it hits the groin area and right under my pelvic bone I have formed another branch of velcroise veins. When I poke the assumed clot the whole vein aches in accuriating pain. I am constantly feeling a painful pulsating sensation throughout my whole body. What I am wo... read more

'Man with the golden arm' saves 2million babies in half a century of donating rare type of blood

An Australian man who has been donating his extremely rare kind of blood for 56 years has saved the lives of more than two million babies.

James Harrison, 74, has an antibody in his plasma that stops babies dying from Rhesus disease, a form of severe anaemia.

He has enabled countless mothers to give birth to healthy babies, including his own daughter, Tracey, who had a healthy son thanks to her father's blood.

Mr Harrison has been giving blood every few weeks since he was 18 years old and has now racked up a total of 984 donations.

When he started donating, his blood was deemed so special his life was insured for one million Australian dollars.

He was also nicknamed the 'man with the golden arm' or the 'man in two million'....READ MORE:

Hello All. Great forum, learned many things here.
I thought I'd share my recent experiences to maybe help some other's as their posts have helped me. I am a 42 yr. old active male and have been into long distance road cycling the last few years. Have never really been sick in my life and am very fit. I'd been feeling a little off in early December 2009. Was a bit more tired than usual and I had a pain in the middle of my back, which I was certain was a pulled muscle due to lifting weights.

I finally made a doctors appt.(after about 3+ weeks of feeling this way)and got an appt. on xmas eve. They did some blood work and took a chest xray. They called me back in the afternoon and said blood work was fine, but I had some fluid around my lungs. Since it was xmas eve, they said they would contact me the following week to have a CT scan done (this is one of those crappy urgent care places).

Things went downhill on xmas eve and I thought I was having severe back spasms. Sharp pai... read more

How to find the cause?

My husband is healthy, 44 years old, nonsmoker and active. He was hospitalized this week with a DVT in his calf and PE in the lungs. His only symptom was the pain in his leg.
How will the doctors be able to find a cause for this? What will they test for/ what should we ask them to test for? I guess he is looking at having to take coumadin for several months, but I am scared to death that this will happen again after he comes off it.

Im wondering if someone could help with this query please.

I am the only child of my mother and father, i am 27.
However, my father has 3 girls from the relationship he was in before he met my
mother.
I was diagnosed with FVL in 06 following a DVT. I was told I would obviously have to
consult a Gynae doctor if i was to think of getting pregnant.
My half sister has FVL as well, and has 3 kids and is just getting ready to deliver her
4th.
I spoke to her doctor wen I was on a visit to d wit the pregnancy, and she informed
me that my sister has a different strain of FVL, and mine is a bit more 'aggresive'.. And
therefore children for me would be that bit harder to plan and complete to full term..
We are both lifer's on Warfarin, doh my sister is on Inohep due to the pregnancy
My question is: Is there different strenghts of FVL?
As fr as i am aware, i am Heretozygous

Newly Diagnosed

Hi Folks, I'm newly diagnosed with DVT. Apparantly I got it after having an arthoscopic surgery for a torn meniscus in my left knee. Prior to this I was walking about 1 mile a day, then now I'm down to nothing.

I was hopsitalized last week when they discovered the blockage and I have basically been tolk not to walk and to stay on bedrest/couch rest and all the walking i'm doing is essentially to the kitchen and such. Even walking there when I get up I feel the pressure, but not as bad as it was in my calf and the tempeture of my leg changes.

I'm on the injections and pills and i was wondering, how long do I have to be on bedrest before I can start walking? I have a trip to New England scheduled in less then a month, (flying) does this mean I ahve to cancel?

Right now I'm scared to death and my oldest daughter is too just trying to figure all this out.

Thanks.

My DVT was found by accident. Sort of...

I hurt my back in mid July, but the doctor/hospital didn't take it seriously and I was strung along for over a month with talk of rehab.

So I made an specific appointment to see the doctor(who told me my problem was arthritis). I wanted to speak with him about speeding up my yet to begun rehab so I can get back to work and out of the financial hole that I was sinking in.

I mentioned the swelling of my right leg, and a sonogram and subsequent trip to the emergency room resulted in me being admitted for what would turn out to be 20 days of blood tests and shots in the stomach. :-(

A week into my hospital stay a different doctor finally ordered an MRI for my back, which determined I only had about 10% space left in my canal because of a herniated disc. So I get a little filter put into my leg as a preventative measure against the clot breaking loose, and then I got the back surgery a couple of days later.

So basically, my push to ... read more

I am a 34 yr old female who has been throwing clots since I was 24. My first clot was when I was six weeks pregnant and 23 and a half years old. I went to the e.r. numerous times before I was correctly diagnosed at 12 weeks. By the time I received my dx I had a numerous clots, that has nearly completely cut off my blood flow in my left leg. The main clot in my greater saphneous/femerol junction. I spent over a week in the hospital and was told I as lucky I had survived the episode. I have had numerous other clots, and suspected clots through the years. Some were hard to dx because the damage to my vein is so severe. Last year while on vacation I believe I suffered a mild PE. i came home and went to ER where they said they could neither confirm nor deny it. I thought there were blood test to confirm PE's?
This past November I suffered 3 new clots. I was in the hospital only over night. They did a scan and ruled out PE. I was then told to see a hematologist. I see one this month. ... read more

Hi all, i am 27 and have one child aged 2. In June of 2008 i developed a clot from my
knee to my chest in my right leg, a localized clot in my left thigh and a PE to the lung.
Following extensive treatment, i was released but diagnosed with Factor V Leiden and
taken off the contraceptive pill. I was told that my options were condoms, which my
husband and I used, up until April of 2009 wen I had the coil put in. However, I just
met my consultant at the hereditary blood centre for my yr check up, and he said that
following reading my file, he thinks it would be best for me to have my tubes tied in a
couple of yrs wen I have the coil removed given the extensive nature of my clot. I
anm Heterozygous for FVL, I was wondering if any women out there with FVL have
gone on to have healthy pregnancies and have been ok afterwards??

Thanks a mill

Air pressure when flying is a concern

Hi everyone,
I was hospitalized over a year ago with a DVT and am still on wararin. I went for an ultrasound last week after an emergency room visit because my leg (which is always swollen), was even more swollen, slightly red and a little warm. My blood clot is still there, dried up and fixed itself to my vein.
I am flying in two weeks, a four hour flight. I have the bulk head seats booked, my INR has been pretty steady for months- always theraputic and I own compression stockings (although I never feel like they fit properly-drive me crazy!).
My worry is about the air pressure when flying, or taking off and landing....are any of these concerns valid? Could a clot travel during a flight due to change in air pressure?
If anyone has been told any information on this, I would love to know.
My doctor is like a rock star....impossible to get an appointment before I go. I am going to go to a clinic to ask their opinion, however, they don't have my records.
Thanks.

Mediven stocking users

FYI- Mediven changed their stockings, both Plus and Elegance have been eliminated in
favor of "Comfort." Which would all be well and good except along with that change,
they have eliminated several sizes, like the petite wide calf Pluses that are the only
stockings to fit me. I have complained to Mediven and actually gotten a response, but
they weren't apologizing for eliminating sizes in the change, just saying, 'due to
popularity of the new Comfort line they are CONSIDERING adding additional sizes in
the future.' Considering alternating 2 pairs of stockings, they still only last about 9
months, I really don't know how long that's going to be, so I am ordering 3 pairs now
despite not being in my budget and crossing my fingers. Literally, the next best sizing
is more than 2 inches off my calf or ankle, and of course it would hurt if too small on
my calf but the place I need the support, where the pain is and where the swelling
sometimes returns, is my ankle... read more

Surgery Soon To Remove Veins and Questions

I was recently referred to a vein clinic by my doctor. They did a sonogram on my legs and said my veins are enlarged and the little flappers to keep the blood going upward to my heart are not functioning, so the best course it to go in with a laser and kill off the veins so the bone veins can take over full duty.

He told me to wear compression stockings and wrote a Rx for them. I tried those for a while, but have experienced extreme pain with the stockings. They are not too tight and are not uncomfortable, but when wearing them the cramping in my legs has gone from painful but tolerable to intolerable all the time. I finally stopped wearing them today, and feel MUCH better.

The picture of the legs on the main page of this forum, mine have that reddishness, but not that bad. I don't have any sores. It is hard to walk now though, and really hard to walk for long distances. With the compression stockings, it was becoming almost impossible to walk across the house.

APS and impact- diff for men/women? Family?

I have found so much info on Factor V, etc. etc. Not so much on APS except for the
connection to miscarriages. But maybe those of you who have it can answer some
questions.

Does APS raise the risk of a 2nd clot above an idiopathic cause? If there was never a
first clot, does it raise risk in the face of surgery, a broken limb or similar
complication?

Are there differences in what having APS means for women vs. men, beyond the issues
of pregnancy?

Do any of you who have it find out that any family members also have APS? Anyone
know the likelihood for a sibling to have it?

plane trips post-DVT

My doc said to email or call if I needed to make any long trips, but as long as I was
on warfarin a 2-hr plane flight or less was not a concern, but I should wear my
compression stockings. It's been 7 months.

I did, and on both legs. And as far as I could tell, no problems, been back 5 days now.

But both out and back, as soon as we started to descend, my legs started to ache (my
DVT one much worse. Of course, rules say you can't stand at all during that time, so
the most I could do was try and rotate my ankles, stamp my feet, etc. The discomfort
made me keep moving but did not provide any real relief. Anyone else? Some of you
are frequent travelers, did it happen to you and now it doesn't? It would be quite the
downer, given that a longer trip would involve a longer descent, perhaps an hour or
more.

Hi everyone, I started taking warfarin 5 months ago due to blood clotting in my leg in pregnancy. I am feeling so exhausted from the minute I get up in the morning. I can barely function throughout the day and trying to look after a baby is horrendous. My baby is great!! so it's not tiredness from her, she sleeps all night. I was wondering if anyone else has or is experiencing this? Also, my feet and ache so much, when I get out of bed in the morning, i'm hobbling like an invalid. It's just terrible. Any thoughts? Thanks
