One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

DVT after broken ankle

In December last year I broke my ankle and had two operations to pin and plate it. Then in February I had a dvt so the plaster had to be taken off and the fracture did not mend until May of this year so could not have a compression stocking on it and was only given one in June. My leg is still extremely swollen and sore and they have now told me to take the stocking I have been given off as it is too tight at the back of the knee and causing more swelling and pain. However I am waiting for an appointment at the Lymphodena Clinic to get help, but I am going on holiday to Cornwall in two weeks and will be travelling by car and am worried about my leg. The clinic refuse to give me anything to help and my blood level is only currently running between 1.8 and 2.1 can anyone suggest anything I can do to stop my problem getting any worse.

Painful lump in calf

I developed a painful lump in my calf last week. It is no where near the site of the original blood clot that I developed in 2002 which went from my groin to my ankle. I will probably go to the doctor this week to have it checked out but I was wondering if anyone had experienced any painful lumps in their legs as a result of an old clot. My clot originated right behind my knee but this painful hard lump is about 4 inches above my ankle on the left side of my calf near the bone.

I have a balance problem and often have bruises but recently I stumbled and got a hard bump type bruise and since then have gradually noticed leg aching, cramping,a pulling sensation and some leg swelling and ankle swelling also and there is some tingling in my foot ( sometimes from my back). The bruise is just left of the front shin in my left leg but my right leg has been achy and crampy too.

To All,

I juste learned from my doctor that most insurances (including mine!) now cover you to have a self-testing machine.
This means I can test at home or when i go on vacation, and i can test more often to be sure that i am in range.
Here is the site my doctor told me to look at www.inrselftest.com

Progestin-Only BCP

Hi, just a quick question

I was disgnosed with DVT due to May Thurner and "aggravated" by combination birth control pills.

I have stopped taking this pills, obviously, but would like to get back on SOME form of birth control.

I hated taking the pills...but right now, not taking them was not an option. I am terrified of IUDs and in my research saw that it is mainly the estrogen in BCP which puts a person at risk for blood clotting.

Is there any risk with "mini-pills," those that don't contain estrogen? Am I ridiculous to even consider taking an oral contraceptive again?

I can't find any solid information online...

What have you ladies done upon discovering that your BCPs are likely to have caused your clot.

Sorry if this is an awkward question...

Hello - I'm so glad I came across this forum.
About a month ago I found myself really short of breath. It was about a week after arriving home from an overseas trip. I went to my GP thinking it might be a chest infection. Given that I had recently had a long-haul flight, the GP sent me off for a chest scan straight away. I had multiple bi-lateral PEs and was sent to the ER immediately. It was a huge shock given I'm an otherwise fit and healthy 26 year old. I spent 5 days in hospital being treated with clexane injections (lovenox) and am now on warfarin for at least six months. The clots were put down to the travel and the fact that I was taking an OCP and cyproterone acetate for treatment of alopecia. No tests were conducted to see if there may have been any other causes.
Four weeks on I am now experiencing a range of other problems - extreme fatigue, aching joints, cold hands and feet, vivid dreams, itchy skin - on top of the residual chest pain and shortness of breath. I also h... read more

I had knee replacement surgery last year. 4 months later I developed a DVT & PE.They put me on coumadin for 6 months. Three months after stopping the coumadin I got another DVT & PE, this time it was much bigger. What would cause the second clot? Do I really have to stay on coumadin for life? Both times I noticed my hair thinning, weight gain, and insomnia. ?? The doctor said it's not from the meds, (BULL) Am I the only one with these symptoms?

Thanks for your input

Hi all, im on Warfarin and my INR was 2.2 last Tuesday. I had a re check done this
morning ans the must be within range as I am on the same strenght. Anyways, I came
out in a bruise last night on my calf, in the front just off from the bone. There is a
lump under the bruise and it is sore to touch, though not sore wen walking or sitting.
However, it is slightly warm to the touch. I asked the nurse taking my INR this
morning and she only looked at it and said it seemed like a bruise. I have marked the
bruise with a pen to keep an eye on it in case it gets bigger. Doesnt seem to have
spread up the leg, but the lump under the bruise seems to be getting higher??? Shud I
be worried or cause im on the warfarin shud I not get a clot. This bruise is not on the
bone, so i dunno if u get a lump on a muscle wen ya bruise. I no im being a total
hypocondriac but im just that way inclined i gues, sorry to all and thanks for any help

DVT manifesting in hamstring?

I have been trying to find a source of my PEs. Immediately before the
first onset of symptoms, I had a left hamstring "pull" that was sore on
running, sometimes while walking. No other symptoms (redness, swelling,
etc). It was particularly bad on the day before I had my first symptom
of PE (shortness of breath).

I've seen references to behind the knee and calf pain, but very little
(only one) reference to a hamstring. Anyone have or know of someone
that had a DVT manifesting in the hamstring? Is that even possible?

DVT / High INR

Hello all,

I have a few questions I was hoping someone could answer. My 78 yr old mother was just diagnosed 2 weeks ago w/ DVT in the lower leg. She was on Coumadin and subcutaneous injections of Lovenox 2x/day. As soon as I heard I started reseaching and had her ask her dr about her INR. Today they said her INR was 8 and took her off all meds, but didn't say her DVT was gone. Now I am confused and wondering what they are doing and what should be happening next. Obviousely her blood is too thin now but how does that relate to the clot and the possibility of it moving to her lungs or elsewhere?

Any help, advise or thoughts is appreciated!! Thank you
Michelle

Is this PTS, or another DVT?

I am a 24 year old male. In May I had a rather asymptomatic DVT in my right leg. It most likely happened because I dislocated my kneecap and was wearing a brace and I was immobile for a long time. The only symptom I had was sharp pain in my calf whenever I flexed it, or pointed my toes up. This turned into a PE, and I got out of the hospital a few weeks ago. When I was in the hospital with the PE, an ultrasound of my leg was done and there were no further clots discovered in my leg.

My INR was 1.9 when I was released from the hospital, and it has steadily climbed up to the 2.6 it is at now. I am concerned because I get these constant dull aches in my right calf now. When I stand up, after a couple minutes my right foot turns a little reddish and my knee swells up (I am going to rehab 3 times/week for the dislocation). When I'm lying down, there is no discoloration and no swelling in my knee. Does it sound like I have PTS, or could this be a new DVT? I can't sleep. :(

Another DVT & PE

Hi all.. I had knee replacement surgery Mar08. In July 08 I was having pain in my ankle and lo and behold I had a blood clot behind the knee which also traveled to my lung. I was put on coumadin but stopped in Feb 08. In May I started having really bad pains in my leg again.Tests revealed I had another clot and PE, this time bigger and wider. I am on Coumadin again. They say I have to take it for life now.(I don't plan to take the medication for life). Why did I get another clot? Does having one epidose predispose you to clots? Lately I've been having a problem with swelling, burning, and discoloration in my ankle and numbness in my toes. Is this something I need to go to the doctor about? I try to keep my feet elevated as much as possible. Does the PE leave your lung damaged? I have asthma so I can't really distinguish which symptom is which. I do know that I am short of breath a lot and my asthma meds don't seem to work as well.

Thank you for all responses.

How long to feel better?

I was diagnosed with DVT just over two weeks ago, with clots in both the popliteal and peroneal veins in my right leg and a possible clot in the femoral vein in my pelvic region. I was luck to have symptoms of pain (which I recognized from surface vein thrombosis years ago) and mild swelling, so that I knew what the possible problem was.

I'm fortunate that I do not have a lot of swelling (yet) and the pain/ache is bearable. However, I am running a low grade temperature on a daily basis; it's about 2 degrees over my normal temperature. On top of that, fatigue is a real issue. BTW, we still have not been able to get my INR levels above the normal range of .08 to 1.3, so I am still on Heparin.

My doctor says that it usually takes most people about a month to get over these symptoms. Did you experience either an elevated temperature or fatigue, and if so, how long did it last?

Coumadin and headaches

Are headaches a common side effect of coumadin? I have been on coumadin for almost 2 months now. My INR has been rather steady between 1.8 and 3.3. I have had a headache for the past 2 days or so. I have taken tylenol which seems to help a bit, but then the headache comes back. I feel dizzy as well, but not constantly. My entire head hurts from my eyes to around my head and to my neck. I've had migraines in the past (about 3-4 a year) but this headache is a little different mostly that the light doesn't seem to bother me like with a migraine. Has anyone experienced anything similar? I'm wondering if it's just a side effect of the coumadin or if it's something more serious that I should worry about?

I am a 19 year old male and have had a bruise on my right leg below my knee for about 2 1/2 maybe 3 years now. I researched DVT online, but wasnt sure if it is what it could be. Its warm to the touch and red/purple. Im curious as to if it could be DVT, but not sure if DVT could last that long before turning into Pulminary Embolism. I do not have the option for a doctor as to i do not have health insurance, and was just laid off and do not have the funds to do so. I am concerned and would really like to know- could DVT even last that long without causeing PE?
