One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

Even a seemingly minor head injury can kill

Blows to the head are the kind of crisis GPs hope never to see - for we all know that even if it doesn't cause a loss of consciousness, it can still cause enough damage to kill.

And even speedy medical attention is unlikely to make much difference.

That's because hitting your head can tear an artery, causing blood to leak into the space between the skull itself and the brain, forming a growing clot. Not that the patient will feel anything at first - indeed, as seems to have been the case with Natasha Richardson, the patient may feel fine.

But inside their skull the blood clot is rapidly getting bigger, and within just an hour or two, their situation is critical. My great worry has always been sending someone home who seems to have got over a hefty bang to the head only to hear they have deteriorated later.

In an ideal world a patient with a head injury would immediately have an emergency CT scan to make the diagnosis, and then a surgeon (preferably a neurosurgeon!) would... read more

Hi There,

My husband suffered a DVT 2 years ago and we are now based in Norway. His company have requested he fly to Japan on business and I am worried sick. I am scared he will get another dvt. He has been told to take an injection of heparin in his stomach. Should he get his INR levels checked as a precaution. He has travelled on many short haul flights since the DVT but never long haul. He is aware of the importance of wearing stockings, drinking water, no alcohol, exercising - am i worrying too much? I would appreciate any feedback. Donna

Hi all. Having finished my warfarin treatment 2 weeks ago and having a scan of my leg, the results were that the dvt has gone, but the skin on that leg is still a slightly different colour to the other one. Does this get better with time or will it remain like this forever. Any replies greatly appreciated.

It has been a year

Well, It has been a year now since I was hospitalized with 6 DVTs in my left leg and a
PE. Just for some history I am 36, female, average weight and fairly active. My
symptoms at the time started about 72 hours after a flight from NY to Paris and I was
on the pill at the time.

I saw my doctor yesterday and I am going to be going off of my anticoagulants. It will
be a gradual reduction over the next 3 weeks. I will be going in for a scan of my leg
to see what the veins looks like now and I will have to be retested for protein S and
protein C deficiencies (everything else has turned up normal and I have no family
history of clots). So I am hoping these tests will also come back normal and I will be
able to stay off the anticoagulants now.

Otherwise, I can report that I am feeling healthy again. I have no problems with
swelling in my leg and I run around just as much as I did before the DVT and PE.

hi there.i wonder if there is a site,or a post on this site, which lists people and their causes of DVT?i just wondered what the main cause is.im new to this but there doesnt seem to be a cause other than the pill, though i havent actually had any tests or scans done other than a chest x-ray which was ok.im not sure why i had this-i didnt have a PE and i didnt have any tests for blood disorders.all they asked was had i recently had an operation, even though i told them before this that id never been in hospital,so it would be very unlikely id had an operation i would have thought!!they asked if anyone in my family had had a clot and when i said my STEP mother they thought it could be connected.im finding the NHS very dim!!i would just be interested to read a list of known cayses if there is one.thanks

Flying to China I hope

I too want to pick your collective brains. I was hospitalized for five days with dvt in my left leg. I am on coumadin now. My doc says she doesn't want me to fly for six weeks. However, I live in China and have no home or car here in the U.S. I am living with my daughter and her husband, hoping to return to China sooner than six weeks. Things I have read indicate that support hose, coumadin, frequent walks during the flight, plenty of water are all that would be necessary. Is that true? I have my first post-hospital check-up on Friday.

foot swelling with M-T syndrome

I was diagnosed with M-T syndrome in my left leg in Dec 08 and treated by a balloon in the vein to open it up, Lovanox and now 8Ml of coumadin aday. I have had on/off foot swelling for the last month or so and today noticed that the swelling is much more evident in my foot. There is no pain or redness. I'm concerned that I may have return of a clot. Medical cost/treatment for the first episode was alarming! and don't want to have to repeat the episode. Should I be concerned? would support socks help keep swelling under control? Advice, experiences, comfort much appreciated. I should mention the I am 63, in fairly good shape, I excercise regularly without pain to my leg.

does this sound like a dvt?

Hi. I am 20 years old and spent late October through February in bed due to ongoing problems caused by a diseased gallbladder and an ovarian cyst. I had the gallbladder removed in early December and the cyst out in the middle of February. I noticed during my hospital stay after the gallbladder was removed that my left upper thigh was really bothering me. It felt like a terrible bruise, but there was no visible bruising on it and I thought maybe it was just from laying on it too much. Since then the pain has increased from what felt like extreme bruising to burning and calf pain. But here's my problem..I am having pain in my other leg and my arm. It's the same pain..extreme burning, cramping similar to a charley horse and it still feels like I am deeply bruised but I feel that in both of my legs. I went to the er about a month ago to have my left leg checked out as well as to have shortness of breath, chest pressure and chest pain looked into. The doctors thought a blood clot was a v... read more

Hi all! Got some really good advice here before (and met some SOUND people too).

I've just been diagnosed as having heart failure which may or may not have been the prelude to the dvts/pes and other problems.

Has anyone else out there had similar diagnosis. Any advice/knowledge appreciated.

Thanks and all the best to all!

Looked on site but lot or rubbish/spams previously posted!

DVT with ITP

Hi EllieUK,

I read in one the posts that you have ITP and PE.
This is a very difficult condition to treat. ITP is a condition with chronic low platelets count (increases the risk of bleeding) and DVT needs to be treated with anticoagulants, which again increases the risk of bleeding.
In such a circumstance it becomes very difficult to treat the patient with DVT. I too have this contradicting problem.

Doctors out here in Mumbai, India were of the opinion that I should go for IVC filter, which they implanted last year (March 08) and also put me on low dose Clexane (Lovenox in USA) injections since then.

EllieUK you being ITP, How were u treated for this problem?

You asked me a question in a post a while back if I had the same condition as you, refering to the inferior vena cava. My clot was in my popliteal and common femoral vein, much different than yours. Because I had intervention surgery at 3 mos out from the onset of the clot, they placed an IVC filter to catch anything that might break loose. I'm sorry I can't add or give you any new info but I have read all of your posts.

Sorry I didn't respond sooner but I haven't been in the forum as much as I used to be.

Hi, I'm new...been on it about a week, but have this constant feeling on heat in my chest and breasts, hot then cold...weird. Doc thinks it's got nothing to do with the drugs and ecg shows my heart is fine. Doc says there are no side effects of warfarin, but i'm also very 'fuzzy'. Should I be worried or is it 'normal'??? TCan't sleep at night and very anxious and 'emotional. I'm also nearly 30...seems to be the age???
Thanks everyone

I developed 3 blood clots in my lung after surgery 5 weeks ago and am now on 7mg-8mg warfrin alternate days. My consultant wants my INR ot be approx 3.0.
I am currently at 3.5. How long is it until the clots dissolve.
Also has any one experienced hair loss? And can I fly this year?

I've been on Warfarin since August. About 2 months ago, my face started to swell. I
look like a squirrel storing nuts in its cheeks. It's very visable and annoying. Has
anyone had the same side effect from Warfarin?
