One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

I have also been diagnosed (via Ultrasound doppler scan) with subclavian occusive dvt & have been on warfarin since begining of October & told that I could be taking it for 6 months. If I get another one I will be takng warfarin for life.

Discovering I had DVT was a complete shock for me I am a non smoker , not overweight, and am not on the pill so I should be in low catergory.

I have had a full blood count, chest xray, & haemophilia screen (showing normal levels of thrombin 111, protein C & protein S) Factor 5 Leiden was negative, Lupus anticoagulant was negative. & therefor no underlying reason as to why I have developed this.

I to have all the anxieties and do not know wether this clot disperses gets smaller or just stays there. I have asked at the anti-coag clinic but they do not know the answers either. Can anyone tell me what I should be asking & which specialists I should be seeing.

The top of my shoulder aches quite severly & is worse in the mornings, see... read more

Isn't it annoying that...

This affliction is so widespread that it outpaces annual deaths for AIDS and breast cancer combined, yet the public isn't very aware it?

The best that the medical community has mustered is to start IV/oral treatment and "hope for the best" while leaving a dangerous clot in tact for an extended period of time within the patient?

So called "risk factors" are literally a collection of shaky correlations? From a scientific perspective, it's obvious not much rigor or study has been put into this afflication.

The prognosis is basically a crap shoot?

Ok...done venting...thank you for your time.

In reply to another thread I said that I had my "Ankle Brachial Pressure Index" read and the result was 1.22..
This seems very high and makes me wonder how much clot has been removed after 6 months of Warfarin.
I cant find any information on this site which makes me wonder who else has been tested for this

Its been 4 years since my DVT, and I didn't exactly have a great doctor. I was only on meds for a short time. I'm now thinking of becomming pregnant, and I'm worried that it may be to expensive. I have read that meds are costing anywhere from 1200 per month and up. Thats just for the thinners, that doesn't include everything else that goes along with being pregnant.
How much did it cost for you? Did Insurance help? Please give opinions! Thanks

I was diagnosed with a DVT behind my right knee a week ago. I was not on any birth control at the time but was scheduled to start Yasmin at the start of my next cycle. Well now that I can't take that, what are my options? What have others used for birth control post DVT?

May-Thurner and the location list

Diane here. A question for all the regulars on this forum. How many of you would like to have your condition listed next to your name so others can find you with specific concerns. For example, I am a May-Thurner case as are a few others. Would the others like May-Thurner listed after their country. Same with blood clotting disorders? I would be willing to keep up the master list for a while if everyone sends me their information.

When a person with a particularly troubling set of symtoms suddening shows up on the forum, it would be nice for us to direct them quickly to the best person to offer help and support. Some of us check the forum regularly while others of us let days or weeks go by without checking it. It will continue to be hit & miss, but maybe we could make it better than it is right now. Ideas?

Iam 19 and was diagnosied with factor V around 4 years ago when my dad's sister had a stroke in her early 40's. My dad and I were then tested along with his other sister who is now on warfrin indefinetly. My dad does not need any treatment and just continues to have 12 month check ups. When I last went to the hospital they discharged me (despite the fact I smoke) they just said i would have to consult them when i became pregnant.
I feel I no little about the disorder and am very confused. Do alot of people with the disorder live life without any treatment or effects of the factor 5???

Long-term Coumadin Use

I just got the news that I may also become a "lifer". (Factor V Leiden found). I had a DVT diagnosed in December. My first appointment with the hematologist is coming up. In the meantime, I'm doing lots of internet research. It's scary and overwhelming but I want as much info as possible before I see the hematologist.

I'm also looking into natural blood thinners in hopes that someday I will be able to go off coumadin. For now, I'm following doctors orders! My doc said I could stay on all supplements but, when I look up fish oil, garlic, and other natural blood thinners, it recommends avoiding them. It's confusing.

Would appreciate your input!

I think it would be great to start a thread about this so we can look at this and see where we are in a year.

My resolution this year is to continue my everyday excercises and get back to good health. I would also like to get off of warfarin, and spend even more time enjoying my family!!

I have tumors in my thyroid--that they first thought were nothing, then thought were something--cancer in fact, bcs of the dramatic growth (1 quadrupled and another grew 70% in 11 weeks), then I had a benign biopsy but they said we still have to watch them very closely, bcs the rapid growth combined w/ hypercoagulation means something (and apparently our bodies detect cancer and form DVT before the tests can detect it very often); then they stopped growing as of the last ultrasound I had in September--whew, (how's this for a run-on sentence?) Okay so here's the latest:

As of last week when I had another repeat ultrasound..... drum roll for the Lord please.....THEY ARE NOW SMALLER THAN WHEN THEY FIRST FOUND THEM! So we can definitively say at this point THAT THEY ARE NOT CANCER (--anymore maybe? who knows, but God? He gets the glory either way)! I am just very thankful to all my friends and family who have been so faithful in prayer and to God for His grace. I hope I do not off... read more

I'd just like to know, has anybody out there resumed (estrogen) birth control pill use after their DVT? Was it a decision supported by your physicians? I am well aware that it is not recommended as the BCP is understood to be a primary cause of blood clots. I have been told not to go back on the pill (just to be safe) but it sounds like there are people out there who DO go back on it.... am I wrong?
Thank you for your help.

hi everyone, My name is Donna and I live in Scotland. My husband suffered a dvt after a long haul flight. He has been off the warfarin for one month and, on Monday, went to see the haematolgist. The conclusion was that the long haul flight was the culprit but still took 12 phials of blood for tests. He is flying to Stavanger next Monday and this will be his first flight since the DVT. He will be flying in a twin prop plane and therefore won't have the same opportunities of moving about. I just need reassurance from others that flying is okay once off the Warfarin. His doc has advised wearing both thigh length stockings, drink plenty of water, avoid coffee and alcohol and to take aspirin 3 days before the flight and during his stay in Norway. Looking forward to hearing from you. I must worry for the whole of Scotland!!!

Blood clot related?

This is probably a stupid question, and I'm hoping you'll bear with me! I'm a 45 yo female, not overweight, non-smoker, no HRT or BC, but pretty sedentary. Last night I was sitting on the couch and my foot, which my husband was partially sitting on, began to feel warm in one spot. I moved my foot and when I was walking right afterward it still felt warm in that spot and would also feel warm when I moved it. It seemed to eminate from the top of my foot where it meets the leg. Subsequent to that (for a few hours) the veins in that foot were distended and the foot felt warm especially in my toes. I got it in my head that it is actually due to a clot in my leg. I do not have any pain, swelling or redness in my leg, but I know that a good majority of folks have no symptoms until they have a PE or something. My foot does not seem to warm anymore today, but the veins are still bigger than the other foot.

Any advice or ideas?

I work at home, I am 20 don't smoke or drink and am not overweight. I find myself on the computer hours apon end and I don't really take many breaks (stupid me) for the past month I have been experiencing minor leg aches, no swelling, but sometimes when I get off the computer, my legs are slightly purple with blotches, and when I walk about for a bit, the colour returns to normal. I went to the doctor about the leg pains and he said its proberbly nothing. But he didn't give me much info...what do you think?
