DVT deep vein thrombosis forum

One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

Woke up the other day with my left leg hurting when I looked to see why I noticed a redish spot on my left shin, about the size of a nickel but not round at all.It was warm to touch and hurt like I hit it hard on something. As the day progressed it became really painful and swollen. I decided maybe I should relax and elevate it which made it better till I tried to get up which caused so much pain I could barely stand. The swelling has progessed to my ankle but it is less painfull and the red spot is now purple and has got bigger. ANybody know what it is??

Since my DVT was diagnosed I have been attending the Anti_coagulation clinic at my local hospital.I am due to stop the Warfarin soon but its not their decision they will have to write to the consultant They dont even know why im taking Warfarin so I am just a blood sample to them.

WHY cant there be a DVT clinic with docs and nurses specialising in DVT treatment?

Also the consultant they will be writing to is a chest doctor who is controlling my treatment for the DVT in my leg.

Why cant there be DVT doctors.

I would be prepared to travel further if I was being seen by a specialised DVT team.

I want to share my success with compression stocking, having had a rocky start with locating the right ones. I had a DVT in 2004 and I have worn compression stockings ever since. I'll post the link for a company that offers a great product and has fantastic customer service. Their black knee highs (20-30) work for me and my legs do not swell anymore. My vascular surgeon says the knee highs are better than thigh highs because they stay in place, plus people will wear knee highs, but they won't stick with thigh highs very long, if at all. My doc wears them himself because they make his legs feel better when he stands in surgery for long hours.

US Political Candidates views on healthcare

Hi Sharon,
I was away for 4 days and when I returned I could not reply to your good message in which shared your views of the current healthcare system and what might lie ahead in the future with a new administration. That string seems to be broken so I'll start a new one here.

As I said, I also have misgivings about Hilary, but I have vowed to never vote Republican. That said, I kind of like Rudy. Do you have a favorite candidate with regard to the healthcare system and what needs fixing. What do you think of Rudy? Obama? Others?

Your medical costs are unbelievable. I thought mine were bad at $67,000 that included 3 days in intensive care and 3 days in a regular room. I don't see how any system could have allowed you to slip through the cracks but some of the things we're hearing from parts of the UK would made one wonder if you would have survived in another country.

Maybe we'll get a little debate going here?

DVT-Phlegmasia Cerula Dolens

I was recently hospitalized (9/15/06) with DVT and the added complication of Phlegmasia. I had a 12 inch clot and was at risk for amputation. It came on so quickly--I was walking up my sidewalk when I got home from work and was in an ambulance about 30 minutes later. I did not have pain in my leg prior to this--looking back, I felt more tired but work very long hours and attributed it to that. Has anyone else been diagnosed with Phlegmasia? Every day I feel pain in a different area of my leg. I am also like everyone else, trying to adjust to being on Coumadin. I would like to know if anyone had else something like this that occurred without prior warning. Thank you.

Hello, I just experienced difficulty sending a response because the system would not accept the numbers I was required to type for verification. Finally after many tries and consideration as to if I had misread the numbers, I copied my message, left the system, and started over.

Fortunately I had copied my message as it was long and I didn't have time to compose it a second time. Just a tip...if you write something lengthy here, considr copying it before you try to send it, just in case it doesn't go through, or is lost.

My GP,s group practice has stopped prescribing tablets of this dose level as the risk of overdosing is too great. Has this happened elsewhere in the UK.
And of coarse what is my dose 5mg!!!

Valve Incompetence in Veins that Nevr Clotted?

Has anyone ever developed valve incompetence in veins that never clotted before? I clotted the superficial femoral (which is a deep vein), the poplitele (sp?) and the perineal proximal. I was clotted from groin to ankle. I recently thought I was clotting again and tho the US showed I was not--thank God--it showed valve incompetence in the common femoral and greater saphenous--which never clotted in the past. Has anyone else ever had this happen and what would cause it? I'm awaiting an answer from my doctor.

I went to the ER

I went to the ER and the doctor did a d-dimer test on me and said it looked normal to him. He said my calf looked pretty swollen, but I did not have any other symptoms of having a DVT. He checked my potassium levels and said they were very low. He gave me a cocktail drink and sent me home with instructions to use heat on my swollen calf. I am still having the pains up and down my leg and I don't know what to do from here.

Hello to everyone. I am a 31 year old female who had a DVT in my calf a little over three years ago. After my DVT went away I had to have a knee surgery which I healed very good. Yesterday I felt a dull(like a heart beat) pain in my calf, the same one I had the DVT in before. I thought maybe it was from sitting in front of the pc for about an hour. When I got up to walk my calf felt very tight so I measured it. It is 2 inches bigger than my other calf. I had a difficult time falling asleep because I couldn't get my leg comfortable enough, I had to keep moving my leg and I put a pillow under it so I could sleep. Today I have felt the same pains, they come and go. I have also been having episodes of pains in the back (upper back where lungs and/or chest is) of my chest when I breathe, but that comes and goes as well. I don't have any redness, but I have a bruising look right under the front part of my knee cap. Do you think it is possible I have another DVT in my leg? I am... read more

okay, i am still fairly new to all of this. i was diagnosed 3 weeks ago with a dvt in my right calf after having foot surgery. they started me on coumadin and here is how my inr has been: 1st friday was 1.1, 2nd week was 2.0 (done midweek on a tuesday) and then ended up in the ER due to chest/shoulder/neck pain and shortness of breath on sunday and it was 3.76 and then on friday it was 1.5.

to me this sounds crazy! does anyone have any tips that i try to understand all of this? also, after being down so much, they told me to NOT go back for my inr for two weeks instead of one. i am just confused.

also, has anyone on warfarin had any skin problems with their fingers? all of a sudden in the last week, the tips of my fingers have all started to peel.

lastly, it seems like my foot will be fine and then for no reason i start getting a ton of pain and i'm not sure if this is the clot causing it or from the actual break which was the reason for the surgery. does anyone... read more

I had my first clot in my arm in 2003, 2nd in my left thigh in 2004 2 months after coming off of warafrin. a P.E. in 2005 on Warafrin with my INR at 2.0. I recently had a stoke and have 2 partal clots one in an artery and one in a vein in my brain. I am now on Lovenox injections twice daily since my INRs were so hard to maintain. Does anyone have any ideas or information that would put me in some kind of a direction as to why I would have clots on anticoagulant medication?? My Docs dont seem to have any answers.

I am a 41 year old that was in perfect health until this. They are blaming my blood clot on birth control that I have been on for 20 years. I do not smoke or drink. I have been reseaching why people get DVT. Did anyone hear that it could be in early side effect of undiagnosed cancer. They have been running studies since the 1800"s that the two are connected. Some people within six months to year after their DVT have been diagnosed. I asked my doctor only to find out it is true. The cancers can be lung, pancratic, breast, ovary and stomach. These cancers release something into your blood that causes clots. I am now under going a series of tests to rule out certain types of cancer. Doctors I believe are too quick to bame it on the birth control pills. If anyone has heard anything about this please let me know.
