One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

Surgery: 2nd DVT / PE?

I'm going for a fairly major surgery next week - getting heperin before the event, and of course until I'm mobile again after the surgery.

I had my DVT / PE last summer due to knee injury, immobility, leg brace & the pill. With precautions I *should* be okay, but still very much worried... any idea of stats out there for pple like me? I'm thinking of getting a pair of those comopression socks you can wear in bed - any recommendations about what type that might be?

Also, I'm 26 - generally healthy before all of this, good weight for my height, non-smoker, etc. Thanks for your advice, Michelle

warfarin (coumadin) and hay-fever

Has anyone been given advice about whether its ok to take anti-histamines while on Warfarin (Coumadin) ? I was told that they can increase INR and should not be taken. Although the nurse then went on to add 'but if you do take some, tell us'. The pollen count is particularly high at the moment (UK) and I am really suffering without anti-histamines. I am also concerned that any herbal remedies would also interact. Anyone got any information or experience in this area ?

Hi there,

I have just stumbled over this site as I was trying to get more info on dvts.It is great to know that there are others with similar experiences to myself. I am a 36 yr old female and developed my first dvt july 2006 while pregnant with twins. It was in left leg. I was put on heparin injections and told that this is normal enough in pregnancy. I had c section in aug 06 and put on warfarin the following day. One day later I experienced severe pain in my abdomen.I was told that it was post surgical pain but I knew that this was different as I had 2 previous c sections. On day 4 post partum, my haemoglobin had dropped to 4 and I was in a bad way. I was taken off anti coags, and 2 days later 3 lts blood clots were removed form my abdomen. I bled for 4 days and after numerous blood transfusions and entry to high dependency unit, the bleeding finally stopped. I was told that I had had an allergic reaction to warfarin! Because of that I had a green field filter inserted in vena... read more

I am worried if they take me off medication I might get another one!? Also, does anyone else get really bad ankle pain in the affected leg?? Thanks

I have never had to wear a Medic Alert tag but am getting on now since I am on Coumadin. What, if anything, should you list in addition to the name of the drug? Thank you.

Hi all, I had a quick question I was hoping some of you might have some ideas about or experience with..... I recently had a dvt in my left leg, and have had three months now of regular hospital visits (my INR never stays in one place). Though my doctor has said my leg has healed surprisingly well given how recently it occured, I have noticed that my whole body has become really vein-y.... The veins all throughout my arms, lower stomach and legs all protrude far more than they ever did before (not quite like varicose, just very obvious, very blue). I'm only 23, healthy otherwise, no major surgeries (except appendicitis over a year ago), but was on the pill and had a pretty good fall to the ground during a sporting match. I'm wondering if anybody else has experienced these symptoms with their veins, post-dvt and while on Warfarin?? If so, did it ever go away? I'm trying to figure out if it's due to the blood thinners or if my body's just permanently changed after all the chaos of the... read more

Concerned about treatment

I work in a group home for the mentally handicapped. One of my residents is mildly retarded, wheelchair, with cerebal palsey. He is 46 years old. He was diagnosed with DVT in March 2007. His doctor has held to the ritual treatment of Warafin and all that stuff. It has held little results. This past Saturday he had another ultrasound done and it revealed no improvement. He is clotted in his calf and ankle area and his thigh. It is swelled to the point its purple from toe to thigh. Also his other leg has started to clot in the ankle. Now his doctor has ordered he wear those compressed stockings. My concern is that the stockings could release those clots to his lungs or heart. Shouldn't those stockings be saved for when the clots have cleared?? In good conscience I just cant put the stockings on him until I know for sure its safe.
Sincerely,
:) BeatlesCrzy69 :)

Disolve the Clot??

My Dr. just told me about a new procedure called EKOS. It delivers ultra sound waves to determine when a clot is disolved by a drug (PTA) that is injected through a cathater. The drug is risky but he said it should disolve the clot 100%. Has anyone else heard of this or tried it. I guess it is an easy procedure and would only require 24hrs in the hospital, no follow up med needed302, the clot is just gone. The worst risk-- bleeding in the brain which could cause death! What is your input on this?

A question was posed on the "theraputic zone" posting about people recovering from DVT - I thought this was a good question and one that has been on my mind as well. Does anyone ever fully recover? I noticed several of you have had reoccurring episodes - this worries me so much (this is my first DVT). Does anyone know anyone who has only had one and no more?

leg numbness

Hey, I'm 18 years old and I just had lap band surgery. For those of you who don't know, it's a type of gastric bypass surgery, only there's no cutting of the stomach. I've always been overweight, but have never had any problems. Actually, I'm very healthy. Last night I went to bed, but my legs felt numb and warm. When I sat up they got a bit sore. There's no swelling or sharp pains, but I'm still being paranoid. I've had shortness of breath, but think that's due to the surgery. I know right after they made me walk, and now that I'm at home I feel I've been walking enough. But just randomly my leg went numb. I wasn't lying on it or in any akward positions. I know at the hospital they were worried about blood clots, but said I probably wouldn't get one. I'll keep an eye out for any other symptoms, but please, could I talk to someone. I'm just so uncertain and afraid that it could be a clot.

Lack of DVT treatment at ER caused PE death

My sister in law went to the ER on a Sat afternoon, swollen lower leg/extreme pain and they determined it was a DVT in her calf, but they sent her home and told her to take ibuprofen and said not to worry, clots in calf don't travel up. She returned to the same ER (different dr) less than 10 hours later becuase it was worse, and again they sent her home and told her to take ibuprofen and elevate leg and also told her not to worry. She was supposed to see her doc the next day (already scheduled appt) but they cancelled an hour prior because he was tied up at the hospital, and she did tell them about the DVT and ER visits, so she saw him the next day (Tuesday). He did not have her undress, look at leg, or listen to heart/lungs. Her leg was so swollen her foot hardly fit in her shoe and her pants were very tight at the knee. She told him pain at a 12 out of 10, so he gave her OxyContin along with home injection of Lovenox (which, she was already on 18 different daily meds for othe... read more

Hey all: I posted this in another thread already but I'm looking for Christie to read this... just to update you buddy on my symptoms of severe leg pain for the past 2 weeks (thinking it was another DVT in the same spot)!

Guess what on top of all this DVT / PE mess I spent the last 4 days in the hospital, diagnosed with severe chronic pelvic endometriosis... had to have laproscopic surgery - all sorts of risks and of course the last 10 days the most pain of my life. DVT is a walk in the park compared to endometriosis! my bowels are wrapped around my left ovary, stuck to it (from the scar tissue) AND I also found out stuck to the uterus as well. the leg pain is from the bowel / ovary pain - hitting nerves that go to the leg.

that's my update! just got home yesterday (Sunday), feel like I'm 100 years old. Gyno says that I am going to put my body into menopause for 6 months and then right after that try to get pregnant. If I don't ovulate the endometriosis can't get worse, and t... read more

Broken Leg & DVT

Four months ago I broke my leg (Tib & Fib) and had an operation to put a plate and screws in.
All was going well until 5 weeks ago when I woke up in the morning with a tree trunk instead of a leg. Right from my groin to my foot was extremely swollen. By the evening a blood test showed that a DVT was likely and I had my first injection of Tinzaparin.
Two days later a ultra sound confirmed the DVT and I was started on Warfarin as well as the Tinzaparin injections.

I was still coping with my broken leg and the DVT until I visited my Orthopaedic Surgeon today when he was very concerned that the DVT could cause an bone INFECTION.

Is this right that the DVT can cause a infection. This is more than I can cope with.

Thrombosis

Hello All!

I am a University Student doing research on Thrombosis. I am in the process of creating a business plan in order to get funding for a local Thrombosis Clinic. In order to do this I will need as many patient testimonials as I can get. Is there anyone who will be able to help me? Do you think that there is a need for a Thrombosis Clinic? What do you think needs to be improved within the healthcare system regarding Thrombosis and what do you think that the healthcare system could add in order to fulfill your needs as a patient? We are thinking of mainly using LMWH (despite its expense) within the clinic and also planning on encouraging our patients to self-inject the LMWH at home. (Of course you will be first taught how to self-inject by an RN before doing it yourselves). Also, I just found out that there is a way to take home INR testing using the ProTime Microcoagulation System. This system is quite accurate, and painless and takes the reading via a pressurized fi... read more

So confused

My fiance had knee surgery and 7 weeks later developed severe pain in his right leg. It turned out he had a severe blood clot that went from the top of his leg to his foot and he ended up with 2 clots going to his lungs. He was on lovenox then on warfrin. It has been about a month and he was released to go back to work and the day he went back to work he came home with a badly swollen ankle. We found out today that his clots are back and now worse.
They put him on aritix but I am worried this is not going to work either. What are the odds that the clot will never go away?

My 74 year old sister was admitted to hospital on Feb 28th and died the next morning, the post mortem revealed the cause of death as:
1 Bilateral Pulmonary Thromboemboli
2 Immobility
3 DVT in leg
Her family had been told that her heart and lungs were ok and that she was depressed This was obviously not correct, what could her family have done to have saved her life?

Thank you
