One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

Can 4 scans miss one? What would you do?

I woke up a few weeks ago with pain behind my knee, it eventually all but
disappeared....until it came back, it moves from place to place.
No swelling, except for just slightly under the knee. I had a positive d-dimer, and
have had 4 negative scans, one negative chest ct with contrast. I did have a
lumbar mri with 2 herniated disks and one bulging disk.
I'm still fairly active, just having terrible anxiety.
What would the likelihood of it being missed be? What should my next step be?
Thank you!!!!

28 yrs old on warfarin for life

Hi everyone,

Had my first Dvt 13 months a go, I ignored the pain thinking it was just muscular
until I woke up in an ambulance after collapsing at home. Apparantly by ignoring
the problem the clot had dislodged at travelled to my lung causing a PE. A few "i
told you so's later" and I started on 6 months of warfarin treatment. After much
variation in my INR level I finally stabalised on a dose of 13mg.

Because of my age and no underlying reasons for the DVT I was referred to a
Haematologist for further tests. These tests came back inconclusive and i was
discharged from his care after only 2 appointments in January this year.

This week I was woken in the night with an awful pain in my left leg (first dvt was
right). After last years experiences I decided it best to get it checked out.... Glad
I did because an ultrasound confirmed another blood clot in my calf. I have been
told I am now on life long warfarin, I don't think I have totally accepted this yet. I... read more

Possible DVT Issue

Need some advice/help with some possible DVT. My issue is right
now that I can't exactly go see a doctor about my leg but after
some research, it seems as if my injury is dvt. A little
background - I'm in the military and went through a course about
four months ago which badly messed up my IT band. I made a
makeshift band for it which I placed right below my right knee cap
during the course. It helped my knee pain but in turn caused some
serious pain behind my knee. After the course, I rested for about
a month and most of the pain went away. Over the past three months
I have completed other courses with little to pain and these were
pretty physically demanding courses. Now about three weeks ago, I
was doing a difficult physical event for the military and after,
behind my right knee started killing me. I could barely walk for a
few days and I thought I just had possibly reinjured that area.
Now three weeks later, behind my right knee is still hurting and I... read more

Hi , I have had a previous clot, 6 months ago and have been off warfarin 3
months. The last month I have had increasingly sore and painfull lymph nodes at
the top of my thigh, which no reason have been found for. The last week I have
been getting a pain in my calf again , very similar to last time, but not as bad yet.
Could a blood clot cause lymph nodes to be inflamed?

Occlusion of Common Iliac Vein

In Oct 2007 I was diagnosed with a large Above-Knee DVT in my left leg following hospital stay for pneumonia. I was 34 at the time

On Warfarin for the usual 6mths, then told to continue wearing compression stockings for 2yrs.

Swelling symptoms & pain have been a feature of everyday life since then, I have changed my car to an automatic as driving was very painful & haven't been able to walk without pain since the clot.

My friend recently qualified as a community nurse & suggested that my GP refer me to a Vascular Surgeon to see if they could help me.

A Doppler & MRI later & I have been diagnosed with a complete occlusion of the left common iliac vein. I have been told that a bypass is not a possibility due to the pressure in my legs & the futher clotting risk, laser treatment/stenting is not possible to due to the occlusion being a solid mass of scar tissue. I have been told not to 'push' my leg, slow down walking & do upper body exercise only, as the vein... read more

Can I get a massage while on Coumadin? My clot is still present in thigh but I
have been therapeutic for 3 months. I have gotten a variety of answers to this
question from my different doctors. Of course I don't plan to have my DVT leg
massaged but has anyone had experience with massage while on coumadin? Can
I have my good leg massaged, or just the upper body? I am in dire need of a
massage ;( and don't want to add this to the already long list of things I can't do
anymore because of this diagnosis.

Recovery time from DVT

Hello, everyone - I am not sure how this all works. My husband had back surgery two weeks ago and now has what they call "extensive deep vein thrombosis" starting at the top of his thigh and extending down to just above his knee. They have him on the self-injectable Lovenox and oral warfarin for now. His family doctor is going to put him on long-term anticoagulant therapy after that. My question is, how long does it take for any improvement in symptoms to appear? Only because I want to be able to follow his progress to know if things are not going as they should so I can get the appropriate care - and also because if I can tell him that he will start to feel better after so many days or whatever, he will have something to work for as he is very blue about all of this. Can anyone help? Thanks so much.

I know that Coumadin/Warfarin Does not dissolve clots but only thins out the blood in order to prevent new clots from forming and present clots for getting bigger but, does this action of thinning out the blood in any way make it easier for the body's own ability to to dissolve clots?

DVT From PICC, hospital trying to discharge

Hello, my father was diagnosed with osteomyelitis of his hand. Before being
discharged from the hospital they placed a PICC line so he could receive
antibiotics at home. My dad had the PICC for about 2 weeks when he developed
severe Chest pain. My mother brother my dad to the closest hospital as she
feared it could be a heart attack. The closest hospital by us is a very small
community hospital & doesn't have the best reputation. 2 weeks ago they actually
misdiagnosed my dad, he originally went there for the hand pain, they missed the
osteomyelitis & sent him home. The pain got much worse & a couple days later
went to another hospital who diagnosed him. But back to my main concern.
Yesterday this small community hospital did an ultrasound of my dads arm,
diagnosed him with a DVT from the picc, the report says "extensive DVT,
thrombus in subclavian vein, axillary vein, and brachial vein". They removed the
picc line, gave my dad a shot of lovenox. My dad has n... read more

Hi Does anyone have a recommendation for a vascular doctor in the
Portland area. I've had DVT for many years(20+). Went off the coumadin
7 or 8 years ago and managed until a recent flight. Got a new clot.
Wondering where to go from here. My vascular system is really bizarre
so am looking for a doctor who can think out of the box and LISTEN.
Any recommendations?

How do you tell if clot is new or old

My wife had extensive dvts in Dec 2014, started in groin spread down legs, to
abdomen and then Pe. No reason was ever found and was put down to
contraceptive pill. Has been off riveroxaban for 10 months with no problems at
all. On Friday last week she did some Aqua fitness and both her calf muscles
were hurting. Left it a couple of days and they were getting better but thought
would just check with doctor all was ok. She ordered scan which found blood clot
in groin. Doctors are being useless as they don't know if this is old of new, told
her to take riveroxaban until they can work it out. She is pain free no swelling in
any leg. Does anyone know if ultra sound can tell the difference between new clot
and old one? Thanks

TIPS -Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic

I need advice on whether or not to allow our Interventional
Radiologist to place a TIPS in my husband if it is determined he
needs one for proper blood flow.

My 27 year old husband got SMVT and PVT in both portal veins most
likely from appendicitis. He has no other health issues. Since
he is so young, they are going to do thrombolysis (we are so lucky
to be able to get care at UCLA) because the intervenetional
radiologist thinks that the old clots may cause him serious
problems down the road as he gets older. If he were older now,
they would not do the thrombolysis. However, my concern is that
after he performs the thrombolysis, they will watch to see if the
blood is going through correctly, if it is not, he wants to place
a TIPS to get the flow out of the liver correctly. Currently,
there are no problems because his body created so many collaterals
and I am terrified of the brain swelling that can be caused by
TIPS. I dont want to... read more
