One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

Acheing / pain at night waking from sleep

I was diagnosed with a DVT at the end of Aug '15. It is now early Jan '16.

At the time I had repeatedly been going to the doctor for months complaining of night time leg
pain in what seemed like around my kneecap and above (like a severe ache) waking me for up to
an hour each night (often at the same time or thereabouts)

...and despite several scans of sorts, it wasn't until one day I got the ultrasound operator to move
away from my upper thigh and scan the underside of my thigh that a DVT was discovered. I asked
them to do this as I had an area there that was "sensitive to pressure".

The doctors were not certain whether the pain was related to the DVT (as it only appeared when I
was horizontal, in bed, asleep) but they concluded that it could possibly be related.

As I apparently have a dual vein system in my leg, blood is able to pass around the leg, and this is
why I haven't exhibited other DVT symptoms.

I can only relieve the pain by standing up, and w... read more

I know it says to take at the same time time each day but my eating habits are not
very regimented. Is a 4-6 hour "window" that big of a deal or is it better to just
take it the same time everyday regardless of it is after or before a meal?

Thanks James

Have suffered calf pain for several weeks. Finally last Friday pain
behind knee and swelling in calf became severe. Walk in centre over
weekend was only accepting emergencies and I thought I had muscle strain
so left it till Monday. No Docs available at surgery Monday but nurse
suspected DVT and told me to take xarelto and booked me in for an
ultrasound following day. Pain now also in my thigh. The scan showed
clot in thigh and behind knee they for some reason were the only places
she scanned before announcing it was extensive and she sent me to see a
nurse on the ward. A quick chat about getting more thinners and wearing
stockings for 2 years and I was sent home and told to see my GP. 2 days
later still not able to see GP because they are all 'busy' despite my
insistance that I was in terrible pain. Have managed to book an
appointment for tomorrow but I have a pain in my sternum now and feel
nauseus. I've been in agony for six days, I'm worried and confuse... read more

Anyone feel your pulse in the affected DVT leg? I am about 4.5 months into my 6 months of treatment...I have occassional swelling when I am on my feet all day. I do notice when I have my stocking on I can feel the pulse in my affected calf where the DVT started. I occassionally feel it when the stocking is off and I am in bed in the morning. Just curious if this is normal or is it a sign of vein damage. Thanks for any advice.

Allergic reactions to Coumadin

Are there people out there who have had allergic reactions to Coumadin? What was your reaction and what changes took place with your treatment?

I posted early in the month, thinking that I might have been bitten by some kind of insect, but was not sure. My foot turned bright red and was itchy; however there was no real puncture spot from a bug bite. Ten days later, I still had swelling and redness. My doctor put me on antihistamines.

Since then, I have noticed three red areas on my stomach and thigh when I got out of the shower. At first glance, they appeared to be possible bug bites, but that did not make sense with my environment, dress style and habits.

This morning, I awoke to what appears to be hives on both my right and left wrists. I did fax my doctor to let her know what is going on and that I am taking Zyrtek. If I feel my throat swell or anything like that, I will definitely call the ER.

In the meantime, has anybody else gone through this and what was your out... read more

XL. There are far too many conjectures on this enigma. I'm putting

I'm 32 years old male. I'm a bit

I was diagnosed with dvt in my calf.
(Distal dvt)
The clot was non occlusive in a small
vein. About 1 cm in length. The doctor
told me to buy compression stock's and
gave me xarelto for 3 months. After that
he told me that I will have to do some
blood test. He told me that he was
expecting full recovery. That was on
November 2.
After a month he checked me again
(triplex) and he told me the clot was gone
and that now I could do any sport I would
like. After the dvt was diagnosed I
started walking. I was pain free after a
couple of days on xarelto. I started with
2km and I slowly increase the distance.
Now I walk daily about 10km( alot more
than the distance I was walking before I
was diagnosed with dvt)
The problem is that I feel some tingling
and small pain in my calf. The symptoms
are not at the place of the clot and are
not that annoying. The problem is that I

I had chronic clots and a completley blocked left iliac. I had a procedure
performed by Dr. Mark Garcia that opened up my iliac and as a result my leg is
greatly improved. Currently a national study is taking place that is looking at the
effectiveness of this procedure. For more information please go to

You will see some really bad cases of PTS pictured on this site. Your PTS does
not need to be that bad to qualify or to get help. If PTS is effecting the quality of
your life you should look into this. I'm so glad I did.

Warfarin and Osteoporosis; low sex drive,

My husband (65 years old) has been on Warfarin (Coumadin) for
about 10 years. He takes if for Atrial Fibrillation. He was just
told he has advanced Osteoporosis. He was never warned about this
side effect. He also has had a drastic decrease in his interest in
sex drive. (We just thought that was due to his age.) Now I have
discovered it is very likely it is from the Warfarin. He has
decided to stop taking the medication, since he does not have the
fluttering heart anymore. Apparently when you stop taking the
medication your blood will go back to normal in about a week. We
think he will need to take calcium, vitamin D supplements and
increase his vitamin K intake (through diet). Taking a medication
to counteract the Osteoporosis had too many major side effects as
well. To help to keep his blood thinner, he may start to have one
glass of wine a day, since alcohol is a blood thinner. Does anyone
have any thoughts about any of this?

However I can't use any estrogen product because it would interfere
with my warfarin. Does anyone have this problem? Are there any

Just looking through the net having been diagnosed with 'factor v
leiden deficiency' only to find that factor v leiden and factor v
deficiency are two different types how do i know which i have? I have
had over 10 DVTs in 6yrs and 3 PEs this has all been whilst on
warfarin and heparin injections i have to have my INR checked 3-5
times a week and its getting me down i feel i live my life around the
doctors surgery and hospital appointments. I also had 4 stents placed
in my left iliac vein in my stomach with a fistula to keep the blood
flowing but 2 weeks after surgery with an INR of above 6 i re-clotted
and have blocked the stents and closed of the fistula.

Has anyone got any ideas to which i should state i have?

Thanks in advance,

I was diagnosed with a unprovoked Dvt in July '14. I have been off wafarin now
for around 14 weeks. The thing is my calf seems to be swelling a little bit more
than usual and I get a cramp pain too in the same calf. Could be a new clot or
could it just be because of the fact I am off the blood thinners and my blood is a
bit sluggish? Also if I went to doctors would they be able to tell if it is a new one
or the old one playing up? Would a D dimer test confirm a new clot?

Odd calf pain. Please help!

Hi everybody,
so my problem started actually at the beginning of the year, I
guess. After jogging I had this odd feeling in my right calf, as
if it was about to cramp, but there wasn't any pain (this happened
only when I was going up the stairs). After stretching everything
seemed ok. Some time later I got some pain in my calf (I thought
it was the muscle), which also went up to my tigh. No swelling,
bruising, wasn't painful to touch. I just thought it was a jogging
injury and stopped running for a bit. But the next time I tried
there was pain again in my calf (stinging, not very annoying) and
it pretty much has been on and off till now. The calf muscle (I
think) is often twitching,or there is some sort of pulsating
feeling and that stinging pain appears sometimes. Whether I'm
sitting or walking does not seem to matter. I finally decided to
go to the doctor (orthopedist) and she suggested it might be a
vein problem, which didn't even cross my mind before... read more

Symptoms after clot dissolve and pts

I was recently (1,5 months ago) diagnosed
with non occlusive dvt in the calf. I had
ultrasound 15 days ago and my doctor told
me that he clot had dissolved. The problem
is that I still feel some pain in the calf
especially when i try to put some more
pressure on me feet like walking really
fast or go down a hill.

Since my clot had dissolved Should I
expect any improvement? Or is this the
maximum improvement I should expect?
What's your experience with recovery? And
Should I continue besides the mild pain?
