DVT deep vein thrombosis forum

One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

Reasons for not exercising on Warfarin??

Just wonder if someone could clarify the possible reason that strenuous exercise has been discouraged by my doctor - is it because the increased heart rate could cause clotting or to dislodge existing clots, or is it more about the risk of accidents and subsequent bleeding?

By the way I can't get answers to many of my questions as my doctor only speaks Japanese (I live in Japan).

How much does Warfarin really contribute to excessive bleeding (lack of coagulation) anyway? If I slip over on concrete and scrape my arm could I have a serious bleeding problem from that? Or if I cut my finger while chopping the onions am I going to bleed to death?

I have had pain in my left calf for a month or a little over now. It has been on the upper inside and back of my calf and gets worse when walking or flexing it. I just figured I pulled a muscle and let it run it's course. It actually stopped hurting this past weekend. This morning, I was putting on my socks and noticed my left ankle is super swollen. I decided to go to urgent care this morning. The doctor there immediately sent me to the hospital to get a leg ultrasound to check for blood clot. They did not find any clots in my legs and sent me home and told me it must be a muscle or tendon issue and to ice and elevate my leg. I am just worried now, because I don't remember injuring myself, and I know they said there were no clots, but I just find it odd I've had the pain for over a month and now this swelling.

Baker's Cyst or Clot?

I had a DVT in my left popliteal (sp?) vein 5 years ago. Since then, I have had several superficial clots, and eventually surgery to remove the saphenous vein. Six months ago, I was diagnosed with a 6.5 cm Baker's cyst in the same left leg. The pain eventually died down, and an MRI showed there was no meniscal tear that caused it. Over the past week, my leg has begun to hurt once again, with swelling behind the knee making it almost impossible to bend. The pain has been getting progressively worse, with sharp cramping pain in my calf. Since the pain started in the knee, I'm assuming it is the cyst, but I'm concerned about the calf pain. Has anyone experienced this that could share some insight?

The Rat Poisen (Warfarin) is killing me

Got a DVT in late August from riding my mountain bike. Dyhydration was the culprit, and not taking in electrolytes. That, plus my low resting heart beat. Lucky I didn't die. When I did the ultrasound they found it extended from my ankle to my hip. I had an interventional radiologist do thrombolysis (bust the clot) above the knee (the don't touch the clot below the knee - not UCLA,not USC, not Cedars-Sinai,nobody.

Now I find myself on 6mg Warfarin. My brain feels like it is going to explode. I don't have any energy. I have a fever and I am sweating. Every day now. All day long, 7 days a week. I think I am going to quit taking the Warfarin as I would rather be dead than live like this. Besides, I know how I got the clot so I don't think my blood is suspect.

clot breaking off after blood thinners?

Hi all. I was just diagnosed in the ER on Monday
with a DVT in my left calf. I am 26 years old and
this is a first occurrence for me. My only known
risk factors are hormonal birth control and the
fact that I had just come off a long cross
country drive.

What is the chance of a clot breaking off from
the original DVT after treatment has started? I
have improved so much in the past few days that I
can walk around with no limp but I'm fearful that
too much activity may "dislodge" something!

I was wondering if anyone has had these problems, I was diagnosed with a DVT in my right tibial vein, I was put on Xarelto and after the third day on the medication I was feeling light headed and nauseous and couldn't focus on anything. Doctor said it wasn't a side effect, so I went on for three more weeks feeling the same way and then he decided to switch me to Eliquis, I was on it for a week with no improvement and then he just switched me to lovenox and coumandin, it has been a week now and still same side effects, Doctor looks at me like its all in my head, I'm so light headed I hold onto the walls and my work keeps sending me home because they fear for my safety. Just asking if anyone else had these symptoms.

Hi all,
I had a laparoscopy surgery done on Wednesday 22/4, didn't get compression
stockings or any kind of information about DVT's. The next day was fine, Friday-
24/4, I felt a little niggle of pain behind my left knee, by that evening my leg from
foot to just above my knee was numb, tingling, calf was tight and felt cold. Went
to hospital, D-Dimer came back normal, sent me home to come back the next day
for an ultrasound, Saturday 25/4, quick 5 minute ultrasound, all normal. Monday
27/4, they sent me for a follow up ultrasound, all normal again. Wednesday 29/4,
pain was still there so doctor sent me to a vascular investigations place for
another ultrasound for peace of mind, all normal again. Doctor is really good. My
surgeon also called and said I wasnt under for that long and they had machines
on my legs to compress my legs during surgery. Could it really be my muscles?
I still have a cold feeling, tightness in calf, slight pain on top of knee and ankle. ... read more

Hi all- my vascular surgeon wants me to go for pressure testing for chrinic
exertional compattment syndrome. I am one year post distal dvt and he doesn't
believe my exercise intolerance could be due to distal dvt alone at this point.. I
get burning pain that does not relieve with elevation ( only a time bit) after any
exertion. The muscle just doesn't recover- even days after excercise... I never had
issues with tight compartments before dvt.. Any thoughts would be appreciated
thanks.

Hello all- I am 1.5 years out from my dvts and still swell a bit. My dvt leg swells a
quarter inch while wearing my stockings. Do you find you still swell a bit with
your stockings? I was professionally fitted. My ankle runs on the large side of
small "and my calf runs on the the large size of medium. So the fitter thought I
should go with the medium size. I still have lots of pain whether or not I am
wearing the stockings. Thanks aheAd for your thoughts.

Swellling

10 days ago, I ended up at the hospital since I woke with my right leg twice its
size and my toes turning blue. After an ultrasound, blood tests, and a cat scan the
doctors told me I had a massive blood clot impacting all the major veins in my
right leg. I was put on Lovenox shots and Celebrex as well as pain killers. The
pain is subsiding but my leg and foot is still huge and I can't walk more than 30
metres. How long does it usually take for the swelling to go down.? As for cause
of the DVT, docs are not sure yet but are sending me for genetic testing as well as
screenings for cancer. I did fall down the stairs three months ago and now that I
think about it, I had pains in my leg after that. I'm scared about the potential for
cancer and I'm scared that I won't be able to hike and do the things I love to do
anymore. I am only 34 and was relatively healthy before this incident.

Hematoma in calf

Hello all. I was diagnosed with a dvt almost 2 months ago. I've been on lovenox
injections twice a day since then. Yesterday I noticed I have a hard red lump on
my other calf with a big bruise all around it. The red area is warm to the touchable
about 2 inches.
Is this just a normal part of being on blood thinners in that I bruise easily now?
Is there any telltale signs of when to call the dr or how to tell when a bruise
warrants a call to the dr? Thank you so much in advance.

Hello I went to A&E last night as had mild calf and chest pain, my leg is not red or swollen and my chest pain seems muscular to me slight sharp pain when coughing but no shortness of breath?

I was a bit worried as googled calf pain when walking could be serious.even if mild.

The DR gave me full examination, blood test for clots, ECG, and chest Xray.

conclusion was blood test was boarderline, so as I am on HRT my pulse was fast ( due to nerves)I also have been inactive recently after a night in hospital. she has decided to give me blood thinners to take home and inject,to be safe...I have to go back for a scan in 3 days time to scan my leg and chest.

She said she is not sure if I have a DVT or not? but the injections wont be harmfull.

I am beside myself with worry my symptoms seem much the same but I have noticed today that when on my lap top I twist my leg to support my laptop and also sometimes hold it up on my left side where my chest discomfort is? maybe this is ... read more

Misdiagnosis?

I am worried that I might have been misdiagnosed. I have been in constant excruciating pain for four months in mostly my left leg but also in my right leg to a lesser extent. The doctor just gave me tramadol and naproxen and wants to blame it on arthritis but the pain is nothing like anything I've ever felt before, I walk with a stick because I can't walk properly, I have pain in my calves, thighs, hips and groin area. How would I know if this is a DVT and what happens if it doesn't get diagnosed?

Hi, 4 months ago I had sclerotherapy in both lower legs to treat
varicose veins, and about a month after I had a really nasty bout
of phlebitis (could hardly walk). This, after being given strong
anti-inflammatory meds, gradually subsided.

In the last couple of weeks I took a coach trip (3 hours of
sitting) to visit a friend. We spent a lot of time sitting
chatting or in the cinema (more sitting...although there was
walking in between), and upon my journey home my legs were both
aching/hurting behind my knees. I put it down to where the
compression stockings I now wear daily were gripping, and again
the ache subsided.

Now a week later, following a brief walk last night, I developed
an ache in my lower left leg. It seems to cover the area on the
lower, inner, back of my leg and goes from my Achilles to as far
as my lower calf, although I've had the odd twinge further up. The
back of my lower leg also feels tighter than normal. I get
intermittent ac... read more

DVT after surgery

Ill try to make this short.

I recently had spinal surgery done. They did a great job because i can already feel my back getting stronger by the day. However, i did have a complication called DVT. I never heard of this before and was shocked when they told me.

They gave me shots in the morning and evening for a week. I was told that these were blood thinners. Then i was put on pills apixaban 10mg in the am and 10 in the pm for 5 days. now 5 mg in the am and 5 in the pm.

I thought these would make my blood thinner and thus dissolve the blood clots.

Now, I'm reading all these stories online and it is shocking. These pills don't do any of that. They only prevent me from getting new clots.

I'm sure we are not all the same. For instance, i never had swelling, my calf just became really hard. I had pain in any position i would be in...standing..sitting...lying.

Now i don't have pain when lying down. my calf is soft as it always was, but i still cannot walk normal. Sta... read more
