One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

Frequency of warfarin testing

Hi, I have to take preventative warfarin as the drug I take for multiple myeloma can cause DVTs. I'm pretty stable - had a spike in August (over 3 and rising), but luckily was tested as it happened, so it was dealt with quickly. I have monthly appts for my cancer at the hospital so I now have an INR as part of the other testing (because I asked for it though). However, I still get sent appts for testing at my GP clinic - I have tried unsuccessfully for this to be stopped - they just don't seem to get this sorted although I have asked. What worries me is that the GP appts are so infrequent and a bit of research seems to show that 6 weeks is a maximum gap if you are stable, and probably it should be more frequently. Just got my book - my hospital test was 18/10 and the next is 10/01 next year!! I think I might take this up, on behalf of others, but I'd like to know what's happened to other people and if anyone knows of guidelines I can use. Many thanks, Sarah

Portal Vein Thrombosis

This all started with chronic itching for me. My itching was all over and not in a generalized area. I have seen Dermatologists, GI dr, Allergist, Internal Medicine and eventually a rheumatologist because I tested ANA positive which is an autoimmune problem. This went on for about 8 months and I began having a pain in my stomach that got worse with eating. It felt like I had an ulcer or something so I continually kept taking Prilosec, Zantac or whatever I could get my hands on. On Feb 12 of this year, the pain was so bad that I went to the hospital. They did an ultra sound followed by a CT scan with contrast. I could not believe it when they told me that I had 3 blood clots...in my portal vein, mesenteric vein and in one of the branches off of the mesenteric. I had been taking a medicine that can cause pancreatitis so I just assumed that's what it was. They admitted me to the hospital and immediately put me on an IV Heparin and one Coumadin Pill a day. I stayed in the hospital for 4... read more

Second DVT Same leg.

Hi all, I've bookmarked the index so I can find this forum again.
I am facing the strong possibility of another DVT. My first was
diagnosed around June/July last year. I was on clexane injections
followed by warfarin. Each time the doctor tried to lower my
warfarin, my INRs went beserk, and I had to go back on clexane. I
finished DVT treatment in November, and have been on low dose
asprin since. Last week I noticed tightness and discomfort in the
same leg. I went to the ER as it was evening, and the D-dimer came
back slightly elevated at 720. The sonographer couldn't clearly
visualize in my lower leg, due to oedema. I finished a nine day
course of clexane today, which is concurrent with warfarin 5mg. I
have to have another duplex scan in 3 weeks to see if they can
locate the DVT.

2 days ago alarm bells rang again and I went back to and A and E as my right foot and calf swelled up and went brick hard. having experienced a DVT in my left leg previously I fely really sure it was another DVT. This proved to be the 3rd false alarm on my right leg but..... I don't regret getting it checked out. I have been feeling tired all the time, cold and shivery, and sometimes feeling sick - As the doctors didn't seem to react to this in any positive way I have put this down to effects of Warfarin (which of course it could well still be)I just felt that nobody was really listening to me and docs put it down to depression! Finally when I visited A and E 2 days ago again a dopler scan thankfully proved there was no DVT and it is Cellulitis (got blood tests) and I am now on anti-biotics. My foot and leg is only a little bit redder than the other one but i can barely walk on my foot.
It was so like the previous DVT! Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Would love to hea... read more

Could this be a DVT?

Hi, I have been having some discomfort in my leg and am wondering if it could be a
DVT. I am 28 and 6 weeks pregnant. Last sunday our family went to visit my mom (a
2 hour drive). The next day my mom and I went shopping for the day. After shopping
for about 5 hours I started to have a sharp pain in my calf. We went to her house and
I rested and after about a half an hour the pain went away. Since then it has come
and gone but it is very dull when it comes. This morning I feel a dull ache behind my
knee. Could this be a dvt? I will admit that I am a little bit of a hypochondriac and this
is scaring me. I have no swelling, no redness and no heat.

DVT in arm followed by rib extraction

In January I went to the gym one morning and then by lunchtime noticed that my
right arm was swelling and my bicep was hard. My hand and fingers swelled and
there was loss of sensation. I went to my doctor who said I was fine and sent me
home. 4 days later I went back to my gp and another partner sent me straight to
A&E. I had a clot down my right arm and into the small veins and one in my
shoulder. After being egnore in hospital for the next for days I finally met a
surgeon who asked if I would like them to try and remove the clot. The procedure
was horrific. I was in surgery for 4 hours and then high dependancy ward. But
they gave me my life back. Without that op I had an enourmous arm that would
have probably taken a few years to recover.
6 weeks after the clot busting op I went back to hospital to have my 1st rib
removed to hopefully stop this happening again. The op was not that bad and the
pain was not that bad. I had read others comments about this ope... read more

Superficial thrombophlebitis and later DVTs?

Hello, all--

I was recently diagnosed with a superficial phlebitis in the lesser saphenous vein
behind my knee. I'm 27 with only a sedate lifestyle to explain the clot. I was put on an
aspirin regimen with compression stockings for about a month. After five weeks, I've
noticed stinging, heavy, tender feelings in the same leg, now extending up to the groin
and then sometimes down into the calf. Measurement yields a difference of about 1/2".
Follow-up diagnostics discovered venous insufficiency in the greater saphenous vein
in my thigh. Follow-up dopplers haven't revealed any DVT, but I know quality depends
on the technician.

Has anyone else's experiences with DVT started in the superficial vein system and
gradually grew to the deep veins? I'm concerned that the pains and sensations I'm
feeling are a long, slow slide into something dangerous. The vascular specialist group
I've seen so far doesn't seem too worried, but a few spins around the forums show me

Exercise, being mobile, compression stocking

Firstly thank you for this forum. My husband had 2 knee (arthroscopy) surgeries,
3 weeks ago. The first week everything was ok. At the end of the first week he
started getting pain and swelling in his left knee. No problem with right knee. He
then took it easy, used crutches to get around. By the end of the second week he
had excruciating pain in his left calf. With the long weekend we only went for an
Ultrasound this morning and he was diagnosed with DVT. He started taking
Xarelto and wearing a compression stocking/ sock. He is very sporty and is an
MTB rider. My questions are: how soon can he start riding his bike and exercise
again? Can he get off the couch and walk around the house and go shower? How
long and when would he need to wear the compression sock/stocking? And when
can he go out to visit friends and go to a restaurant for dinner? My questions
might be a bit silly but I would appreciate all the advice we can get. Thank you.

hi guys, I was just diagnosed with DVT Feb 2, 2015. The ER told me
that I could start working out again after a month. I'm on xarelto,
and I wanted to start the thirty day shred. Would this be okay?

I have no leg pain at all anymore, (Thank God), but my leg is still
red and just a tad swollen.

I had a DVT and superficial clots diagnosed in November last year. I have
moderate varicose veins, but it's thought my DVT was caused by a number on
contributing factors, including the pill. I stopped Xarelto about 6 weeks ago, and
have since had a few instances of a warm/hot leg in the region of my varicose
veins. This region isn't hot at all times of day, but can remain warm for many
hours. There is swelling, although there is no redness or pain. Just slightly
bulging veins. Is it common for vein related inflammation to be warm?

Many thanks!

Risk of old clot traveling?

I tore a MCL and then formed a blood clot. The doctor has me on blood thinners
which I realize prevent blot clots from forming and growing larger. But I also
understand it takes months for the blood clot I have to dissolve. Aren't I therefore
at the same risk of the blood clot breaking free and traveling to my head and
lungs that I was before going on the thinners? I mean the clot is still there, so it
could break free at any time correct?
Pretty scary, so any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

dvt in the arm

hi,
i have a blood clot in my arm and has been on warfarin for 2 months. it has took the whole 2 months to get my inr to 2.2.
after the first month of being on warfarin my arm swelled and got really heavy so i had to go back 2 hospital, this was because the doctors had not given me the correct dose and my inr had come down to 1.3 but should of been 2.5, so the clot had no treatment for 2 weeks which caused the clot to get bigger.
after 2 months i still get swelling and heavyness in my arm every morning and if i do alot with my arm it swells and get tingly. as i am only 24 if i have any problems i struggle to get an answer from the doctors cause they say i am a guinea pig for them cause they have not had any one so young to get a clot and normally people get them in there leg and not in there arm.
is there any 1 else out there that is young and has one in there arm.
im sure there is more than just myself.

Hi all, six months ago l had two coronary stents fitted to my arteries, and was
prescribed 20 msg of an anti platelet drug called Prasugrel to be taken Dailey.
Unfortunately this caused a bleed in my bladder (probably due to prostate
surgery six years ago)
I was admitted to hospital and catheratised and spent 6 days having my bladder
irrigated to clear the blood.
On the 7 th day they finally took me to theatre where they cauterised the prostate
and stopped the bleeding.
Unfortunately l developed a pulmonary embolism whist in hospital and given
claxine to inject into my stomach for 8 days and put on Warferin.
At present I am taking 5.5 Mgs of Warferin and will have to take this for 6 months.
My cardiologist wants me to carry on taking Prasugrel for a further six months
because he is worried about my two new stents blocking up.
I would gravely appreciate any input on this posting as I am not sure if anyone
else has similar problems or any thoughts on how likely ... read more

Hi I had DVT in December 2008 and thankfully do to treatment it was cleared up. Unfortunatly for the last year or so I've been suffering from pain in the DVT afflicted leg. The pain sometimes feels like heat, othertimes a dull ache or sometimes a combination of the two. It's really starting to get me down now. I was given knee high compression socks but I find them very uncomfortable and they dont really help the pain. Any advice would be most welcome.

Thanks

I was diagnosed with a dvt (groin to knee)
last August when I was 12 weeks pregnant.
my new doctor just sent me for an
ultrasound to see if the clot's still
there and sure enough it is. Our plan was
for me to go off blood thinners on tuesday
so we could then test my blood 2 weeks
after to see what caused the dvt to begin
with. Now I'm scared and don't know what's
going to happen. I go in on the 1st so I
guess I'll discuss all of this with my
doctor but I was just wondering if people
with similar situations ended up on
thinners for life? And what happened with
the coot?
