One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

DVT Leg Swelling

Hey all, I am about a month into my warfarin treatment for a DVT left leg (thigh high to calf) and subsequent PE in each lung. I personally believe the clot was in my leg for some time before what I thought was a muscle pull in my calf revealed the DVT. I am active (jog, sports).
When does the swelling in the leg go away? My case is calf down to ankle - no thigh swelling. Has anyone had swelling, then after DVT treatment it is gone? I am reading some threads where people have swelling for life. My doctors say it is normal to see swelling for a couple of months until the clot dissolves back into the body and depending on vein damage the swelling might never go away. I am curious to hear other stories.
I am currently wearing compression stockings during the day which if I am on my feet part of the day I have no swelling. I also read that wearing stockings after being diagnoses with DVT you can reduce your chances of chronic issues later on.
I don't mind the healing process, but ... read more

Possible PE

Hi everyone. I've never posted here before but I could really use some insight. On
Friday 7/21 I had three wisdom teeth pulled under IV sedation. It went well. I was
put on amoxicillin for the recovery. After 6 days on amoxicillin I broke out into
hives and had trouble breathing. I went to the ER where I had a fast heart rate
(130) and fainted but quickly recovered. I told I had a "possible" PE and they
wanted to do further testing. They performed a CT with contrast dye but said they
couldn't say for sure if I had a small clot or if it was simply clouding from the dye.
So they admitted me to monitor me for 24 hours. My D-dimer was 1200. They
started me on Eliquis just in case. Well, I've been on Eliquis for 48 hours and my
pulse has only increased further and I'm getting headaches. Is it normal to be on
blood thinners before any real diagnosis is made? Could be d-diner be high from
my wisdom teeth surgery that was 7 days ago? They want to keep me for another

Hi all, thanks for the info.. Faye, what is Paracetamol? Can anyone tell me what to expect since I am still having a menstrual cycle and on Coumadin. On Thursday 8/7 I had my first cycle since the DVT/PE diagnosis. I am having the worst cramps, back pain, dizziness, nausea and of course I'm flowing like a fountain thanks to the Coumadin. Could this cause me to become anemic?

Has anyone had this?? I have a clot in the illiac vein extending into the vena cava discovered via CT scan for an unrelated issue a few weeks ago. I was on lovenox shots and now just warfarin. I'm going to a hematologist in a couple weeks but so far all the doctors I've talked to rarely heard of this?? It would be nice to know I'm not the only one with this :( I also have factor v leiden, heterogygeous. (I just had a baby 6 weeks ago so the ER doctor said this was most likely the cause of the clot)
Also, last night and today I started having pain in my left abdomen/ hip area. Has anyone had this? It's very bothersome and I am using a heating pad all day today. I talked with a nurse who thought it could be residual from the clot healing but who knows??
Trying to get out of this "woe-is-me" attitude...

xarelto and hair loss

I suffered bilateral pe's shortly after
the induction of anesthesia for a gall
bladder surgery. I was started on
coumadin in the hospital. The drs wanted
to switch me to Xarelto, selling it as a
wonder drug.

Since taking it, I've experienced terrible
hair loss. (I was at work the other day,
took out my pony tail and ran my fingers
through my hair. I threw away the
resulting clump. My friend came over to
talk, saw the hair and wanted to know why
I cut my hair at work).

Has anyone else had this issue? After a
discussion with my drs, we're switching
blood thinners. I hope the hair loss

Suspected DVT an emergency or not?

Symptoms: Intense muscle soreness in outer, middle thigh;
The pain varies depending on activity -- fine when I'm not moving, uncomfortable when I walk, and intensely painful when I flex the leg -- to sit, to crouch, to put on pants, etc.
The pain has come on gradually over the past couple of weeks;
I'm recovering from major abdominal surgery (Sigmoid colon + ovarian cyst removed). The surgery was performed about 2 1/2 weeks ago.

It's unlikely that this pain is a pulled muscle since I've been on a strict "No exercise" routine since the surgery.

Just writing this post (and thinking back to what I've read on this forum) makes me think I should really get myself to a doctor soon - just to get it checked out. I suppose my question is -- is this a real emergency? Should I get myself to a doctor ASAP? Or could it wait a few days? Before, you all think I'm nuts, here's why I'm asking:

1) As of a couple of days ago, we seem to be having some problems with our health insurance. ... read more

How long to wait after DVT before hysterectomy

This forum is great. I just had DVT and PE diagnosed - not confirmed but speculation given no other health or travel issues is the large fibroid pushing into my vein. If that is really the cause, I'd like to have it out ASAP. It appears most people have surgery, then DVT - not the opposite. Any that needed surgery after DVT and PE know how long you have to wait or what test you have to pass before you can have major surgery?

Problems with heat and blood thinners

I've read a lot about heat sensitivity and anticoagulants, blood thinners. I have
previously had some problems with heat. This year with the extra heat and
humidity I am really having issues. If I go outside and do anything more than go
to the car and turn on the a/c I run a real risk of severe heat exhaustion. E.g. 0 to
flat on my back with my heart racing in five minutes. I'm currently on lovenox, but
I had a similar problem on Coumadin. I am in good shape, walk on treadmills, do
yoga 2x weekly. These problems have come on in the last month as the heat has
skyrocketed. I've been trying to gradually acclimate but that doesn't seem to be
helping. Maybe I need to be more patient? I've tried looking on the web and it's
clear that issues with heat aren't uncommon on these drugs but i haven't found
any ideas about what can be done about it.... Any suggestions from the group?
I'm getting really tired of spending the summer indoors.

DVT after a different procedure sue?

I am a young woman who had an SVT ablation, 3 days later my groin where they had entered was hurting so bad. I went to the emergency room where I had the procedure. The doctor that performed the original surgery tried to ignore the possiblity of something being wrong. Found a DVT starting from where he went in to 113 cm long with possible PE. Had surgery and blood thinners. He tried to dump me as a patient. Has anyone had anything similar and sued? I have no clotting history and no genes and it was stated it was from the ablation. Thanks!

Sudden Drop in INR

I have been taking warfarin for 13 weeks now and for the past 6 weeks have been in range between 2.0 and 3.0.

On Monday my INR dropped to 1.4. I haven't missed any doses, changed my diet or taken any other medication.

The clinic doctor was stumped and upped my dosage to 11mg on Monday and 9mg yesterday. Went for another check this morning and my INR was 1.6.

Now he has upped my dosage to 12mg tonight and tomorrow, 8mg on Friday and 9mg Sat/Sun and another check on Monday.

I am a little concerned about how much warfarin he has asked me to take and also about why my INR has suddenly dropped so low.

Has anybody else experienced this during their treatment?

I am trying to figure out if my symptoms are DVT or muscular. I didn't do anything to pull a muscle but I have bad pain in my upper calf. There is no swelling or redness but it hurts to touch. The odd thing is that it got a lot better yesterday for most of the day. Today it's really painful again. Can symptoms of DVT come and go? Should I be taking a baby aspirin just in case?

Tylenol and INR ?

I was told that the only pain reliever I should take while caring for my DVT and on Warfarin was Tylenol. Has anyone checked to see how this affects their INR reading? I suspect the danger is taking too much and causing an internal bleed (which would be all the more dangerous if INR is high) ?

And if you do regularly take Tylenol during Warfarin therapy, what dosage do you take ?

Thanks !

I have been on Xarelto for 7 weeks after a DVT. I now have developed swollen glands. Is
this a normal symptom. I also read ginger, garlic, horse chestnut and omega 3s can create
adverse reactions. I have taken all of these but am now stopping. Can anyone provide
guidance from their experience?

Stopping Xarelto after 90 days

I had a DVT/PE episode. The doctor in the hospital suggested either Xarelto or Coumadin until my lab results were reviewed by a pulmonary physician. I selected Xarelto for this temporary treatment (15mg twice a day for 15 days then 20mg once a day for 90 days). My Pulmonary physician reviewed my lab results and has concluded that my DVT/PE was an isolated event with no genetic or environmental reason. He suggested stopping the Xarelto after the 90 days. Does anyone have a transition program to stop taking Xarelto? Would it be prudent to take an antiplatelet (low dose aspirin) after discontinuing Xarelto? I am concern about the stroke potential of stopping Xarelto?

I've been on warfarin since July 2014! I got my first dvt in 2013 whilst pregnant
and got another clot in the same place in the July '14. Doctors can't tell if it was
the same clot or a new clot. Been told I can stop taking warfarin if I like but afraid
of getting a 3rd clot which I'm told could be fatal. Has anyone any experience on
getting 2 clots in the same place and then stopping warfarin therapy?

Questions about compression socks and pants

I wear a thigh high compression sock on my left leg (the one with the DVT) and am wondering if wearing the compression pantyhose might be a better idea. Do you wear a compression sock on both legs or just the leg that your DVT occurred in (assuming you have only had it in one leg)? Also, with summer coming, what do you do with the heat? I know that I will have to wear it no matter what, but we get weather around 100 degrees plus. Do you wear shorts or suck it up and wear pants/skirts? What about shoes? No more sandals or do the open toed compression socks work well for sandals? Finally, what about pants? I can no longer wear any of my pants. I have one pair that is two sizes two big which fits my leg and nothing else. I don't know what to do. I have large thighs as it is, so how do I find pants that fit now that my leg is even larger? I'm miserable wearing this pair of pants that is too big everywhere else.

These seem like pretty stupid questions in light of the others and I'm s... read more

I'd be very interested to know how many

(2) were first told by their doctor about the
deadly side effects of warfarin.

Just type "me, yes" or "me, no" below.

Hi,I've had advt in my lower calf for 6 months now and am on warferin. I knew that i shouldnt be on birth control pills but was shocked when my doctor told me today that my main options were having my tubes tied or my husband having a vacectomy. We are currently using condoms and not happy to continue with these for ever. Does anyone know of any other safe methods of contraception as im only 34 and too young for sterilization.
