One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

Rash from Stockings

Hey all,

Anyone get a rash at the top of their thigh from the compression stockings? I was fine for the past 7 months wearing them but all of a sudden if I wear it for more than 2 days consecutively, I get a rash on the top of my right leg (DVT leg). It goes away if I stop wearing the stocking but given that it's my bad leg, I need to wear it. Anyone have any ideas on how to prevent that?

I've tried changing the soap to wash them in and cleaning the rubber top with different things.

Degrees of clots ?

I am just curious if their are different "degrees" of clots? What I mean is, when I
went to ER my leg looked nothing like the pic above. If you looked closely it was
Slightly different coloring than other one and a bit swollen. Doctor measured 3 or
4 places in each leg, and only the mid calf one was 2.5 cm bigger than the other
leg. I have a clot from knee to ankle, it really just feels like Charlie horse but hurts
worse the more I walk in it. Everyone is surprised I was let go thru ER. I was put
in 120mg luvenox shits 2x a day and 5-7.5 mg Coumadin at night. I think they let
me go because I also have Rheumatoid Arthritis and am quite adept and shooting
myself with shots. OR could it be my clot is minor? A smaller one? A safer one? I
am scrounging for any good news just now. Also why did they not have me put in
pressure stockings? Or even mention it? Thanks!!!!

I had a clot from knee to ankle, on luvenox and Coumadin. Calf still throbs and
aches worse when I walk. My job is for a dentist, but basically I run on my feet
constantly like an ER nurse? Will I ever be able to go back to work? Does
throbbing and pAin lessen as clot dissolves? Just trying to plan my life!!!
Thanks!

I've been taking warfarin for 12 years as I have a congenetal absence
of ivc. Of late I've been feeling really unwell. I'm 100% sure its the
warfarin. I'm only 34 and I'm fit. I'm really active. What is the best
alternative to warfarin? I have to be on blood thinning meds for the
rest of my life and ideally don't want to feel sick until the day I
die!

Hi, just wondered on this one. If an area looks swollen due specifically to venous issues does it always pitt?

My old dvt leg looks swollen to me around the knee and I've been having a few odd pangs and heaviness this week but when I press on the affected part it doesn't really leave a mark. Des this automatically mean there is no swelling?

Advice Sought for New DVT Patient

First, this site is awesome, and a wonderful way to share
ideas/thoughts/encouragement to those of us that have suddenly stepped through a
big scary door into this new DVT world.

Second, I've been diagnosed within the last 48 hours with DVT (after a long-haul flight
back from the US). My DVT is in the right calf, I've been started on Heparin and
Warfarin within days of the flight back, I am in a good hospital with a doctor who sees
30-50 of these cases a year (lots of long-haul travellers get this I understand) and
while I have significant pain in the calf, I can hobble around for 20-30 minutes. Once
I elevate my leg, the pain subsides to a dull, very manageable ache.

QUESTION: For those that have had similar symptoms (i.e. not necessarily upper leg
DVT or PE), I'd be very appreciative to hear how recovery went, understanding that all
bodies are different, of course and that this can always rapidly change. Did anyone
experience a "full" recovery, ... read more

Clot Symptoms

Since suffering a DVT in my left leg and a pulmonary embolism
three years ago, I'm stricken with paranoia any time I get unusual
leg pain. Whether it's arthritis or back pain radiating, I'll
freak out and get it checked. Since my doc won't take me til
tomorrow, thoughts on this?:

I have pain in the same leg, much lower in the calf (original clot
was behind the knee above the calf) that feels like a strain or
cramp. It doesn't hurt much sitting, but is amplified when I push
off to walk or get up. I'm thinking I'm being paranoid here, but
it's new pain I've never had. I didn't work out. It just kind of
grabbed me this morning. Any ideas?

Hello all, I'm a 25 y/o woman with no known risk factors other than maybe my
slightly sedentary lifestyle. Last week I started feeling brief hot flushes in the outer
area of my left calf - no pain, just a feeling like I'd pressed my leg up against
something warm. Didn't feel warm to the touch as far as I could tell. This warm
feeling usually lasts for just a few seconds. It seems to happen most when I stand
up after sitting. Left calf has been consistently 1cm bigger than right calf over the
past week, no fluctuation. No visible redness in leg that I can tell, but when I first
get out of bed in the morning my left foot is noticeably more red/purple than right
foot. Now I feel some slight pain in same spot where I feel the hot sensation, but
very transient and mild, does hurt more when walking. Went to a walk in clinic
yesterday and the doctor roughly palpitated both legs, said DVT would be obvious
and instead thinks it might be a neurological or autoimmune is... read more

Anaemia, Warfarin and heavy period bleeding

Help! I was diagnosed with DVT in right leg and multiple bilateral PEs on 12 Jan 2009. On admission to hospital my HB was sitting on 74 which they decided was way too low and needed correction with a blood transfusion. They gave me three units of blood that night. They also put me on iron tablets. Two weeks later on follow up the consultant told me to stop the iron tablets. In the meantime, my menstrual cycle had kicked in (37 years old) and I had been bleeding for 14 days. He still said stop taking the iron tablets. In the meantime, I have had very heavy bleeding (lasted for four days) followed by "nuisance bleeding" ie enough to be a bother, but not much else. My HB level has dropped from 112 on discharge to 98 two weeks ago and then down to 90 last week. I didn't get last week's result until today and now they are talking about a retest next week followed by another blood transfusion if still low next week.

What I want to know is what can I do to boost my iron levels... read more

Hi, I have recently been diagnosed with a dvt in my right leg after knee arthroscopy.

I have had the clot since 3rd week post op but it was only diagnosed at 7th week post op.

I am now on warfarin for 6 months and am having daily injections of Clexane.

I have had conflicting information from both of the dvt nurses and as I saw my consultant yesterday I am now still a little unsure as to what to do for the best.

The dvt nurses both told me not to drive (I have been since 2 weeks post op) and that I should wear compression stockings every day for the next 2 years. I raised my concerns about all the different information I had been given and was told to speak to my consultant who carried out the arthroscopy. I did wear the stockings during the day however, when I took them off my right leg was red from the top to my ankle, especially around the knee area and extremely hot to touch. I told the dvt nurse and she said to not wear them and speak to my consultant.

He has ... read more

Vague pain previous clot

I had a clot in my calf five years ago after the birth of my first daughter. I had a few painful superficial clot afterwards but have been clear of anything for 2 + years.
The last week I've been having vague pain in the same leg but higher up, not in the calf. It goes from my knee to groin, like I've slept on it funny or a mild sprain. No swelling R redness as far as I can see. (had only very bad pain though with last dvt, no swelling)

The pain s only very mild, nothing like last time and doesn't seem very 'localised' but is definitely there.

Should I wait a bit and see if the pain worsens or do something with history ?
It's annoying as it's vague and not constant atom. Noticing more when lying down or in evenings as I'm busy all day.

Hello. First I am sorry for having to post this but I am quite worried and could do
with some help.

Since last Tuesday I have been experiencing pain in one of my legs. I have, I
suppose an irrational fear of blood clots and this pain really is controlling my life
at the moment.

Just some points about the pain:
- It is in one of three locations. In the calf muscle at the back, behind the knee (It
seems to feel more located towards the tendons?) and sometimes, not so often in
the thigh.
- It is a stabbing pain. It can last anywhere up to an hour but usually not more
then it will disappear or fade away. I don't really know. For example, right now I
got up from computer desk and had a pain in my calf. I walked to bathroom and in
bathroom I rubbed the area and the pain seemed to ease.
- There is no pain, or minimal pain when I poke, prod and squeeze my calf.
- The pain is worse in morning when I wake up.
- Flexing my foot sometimes causes an increase in ... read more

coming off warfarin 3 weeks early?

Hello, I had dvt beginning of August and
put on injections and warfarin, it took 2
1/2 weeks to get to 2.0, I had been trying
to get my warfarin changed as I was having
awful reactions. I was told I'd be on this
for 12 weeks but as of today the
consultant has informed the dvt clinic I
can stop taking the warfarin which is 3
weeks early. Has anybody else come off the
warfarin earlier than originally told? Of
course I'm happy so I can hopefully get my
body back to normal and reduce my pain,
but I'm also quite nervous stopping it and
whether I have a reocurrence.

Hi guys. Just found this forum this morning and had a quick read of 4 or 5 pages
and it's made me more nervous so I thought I would make a post. I am a 26 year
old male. I don't really have any risk factors apart from sitting down at a desk for
large portions of the day.

Anyway for the last week maybe even 10 days I have been having leg pains. I just
assumed it was an injured hamstring as the pain seemed to be mainly focuse on
the back of my thigh. But in the last few days the pain has been moving from calf,
to behind the knee. Back up to thigh etc.

Yesterday, I had no pain when I woke up in the morning. Nor did I have any pain
throughout the day until about 3pm when I sat at my desk for 3 hours. Then when
I got up the pain started again. It wasn't too bad. Manageable. This morning
however I was in agony walking to the train. The pain was all up the back of my
leg and at the front of my knee. The more I walked. The more the pain seemed to
ease.

Pain-and-Warfarin

I am 78 yrs old, and have been using warfarin for about 14 years,
which I must take to avoid
blood clots.

Recently, I had a bicycle accident in which I fell and slammed my
left shoulder against concrete sidewalk (ouch!).
YES, my left arm, shoulder to elbow, was IMMEDIATELY
paralyzed,
and too painful to move , though I could use my left hand and bend
my elbow without any pain !

I am lucky enough to be healthy and fit as I am an exercise freak,
exercise 5 days a week!
But without knowing about Joint Pain and Warfarin, I decided to
stop exercsing until the pain was relieved.

It has been too painful to fall asleep lying down in bed, I can only
sleep in a sitting positon with my
