One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

This is my second period since my DVT diagnosis. Both times the pain has seemed to increase in my leg.

I am obviously aware of the effects that warfarin has on menstruation but does anyone know if there is a reason for the worsening of the leg cramps?

Maybe it's just a coincidence but seems strange....

Compression stockings and PTS

Hi guys
Sorry to confuse anyone on this site but had a letter from my consultant in acute medicine today. She claims that anyone with a below knee DVT is unlikely to develop post-thrombotic syndrome and that there is no need to wear compression stockings. However, her own DVT clinic nurses (and so presumably this is a local and national NHS directive)have told me I need to wear them daily for next 2 years and ordered me some. I am willing to wear them if needed but cant believe all the discrepancies and inconsistencies I am hearing. Seems like everything I have read does indicate that this is the current recommended treatment following DVT but why are the specialist docs saying differently? What are your experiences?

DVT how to stop cramping?

9 days since DX of DVT in calf and starting Lovenox. (Also 22 weeks pregnant,
baby is doing well!) Blood tests confirm the lovenox is working. (I didn't ask for
the exact level, I know I should have.)
Day 7 my calf felt great almost all day. Yesterday it was hurting more, and today
it's almost constant cramping. I've been trying to walk around, and lying down
trying to move my toes...
But what can I do to stop this cramping? What does the cramping mean?
Thanks everyone!

INR 2.0 and I have new clots

I am 33, had a very active life style, was cycling 40 to 60 miles a day. I went to the ER a few months ago and had 7 PE's, and a DVT in my right leg. I spent some time in the hospital. It took 11.5mg of Coumadin to keep my blood levels above a 2.0. That was all four months ago. Two weeks ago, I went to the ER and another DVT. MY INR level at the time of the DVT was at least a 2.0. I am now taking 14.5mg of Coumadin a day and lovnex shots twice a day in my stomach. my higest level since the lovnex shots started two weeks ago and the raise in Coumadin has been a 2.6. I am very aware about vitamin k and I have a very low vitamin k intake. Has this happened to anyone else? This condition got me medically retired from the Coast Guard after 14 years of service. I am now at home in North Carolina and going to find the best doc through the VA. any help, suggestions anything would help. my email address is DavidMoulton76@gmail.com

What are chances 2 ultrasounds missed it?

Will try to keep this short. Started almost 3 weeks ago in left leg with pain around
knee and through calf. A few days into it.. While on vacation I decided to visit an
ER and get it checked because pain was now in hamstring, thigh and inner knee.
Ultrasound was done and was negative. They checked groin, part of way down
thigh, behind knee and right above ankle. So 2 weeks later pain was a bit worse
and off and on in different areas of leg. Mostly calf and back of thigh. Along with
occasional shin and ankle pain. My shin also at times has this weird numb but
tingly feeling. Was back at home so yesterday went to local ER and asked for
another ultrasound. They checked it exactly the way the ER did in another
city/state and said it was clear. Also did a PAD test which was also normal. The
pain 2 nights ago has been the worst it's been so far. Almost felt like a severe
growing pain. The pains have gone from tingling, burning, stabbing, aching,
cramping and al... read more

Has anyone tried asking their Doctor in France to change from Previscan
to Warfarin and what was the Doctors response? I intend doing this the
next time I see my Doc and wondered if anyone had already been down that
road.

Warfarin and smoking

My husband had an idiopathic DVT in late 2012. He has been taking Warfarin ever
since, and has recently been told he will be on it for life due to being a smoker. He is
desperate to be in a position to stop taking it and has recently stopped smoking. He
realises this won't happen immediately but has no idea how long it is likely to take
to get to that position. Does anyone have any idea what kind of time frame for
coming off the Warfarin after stopping smoking is likely? He won't be starting
smoking again!

Traveling/elevation change after DVT

Hi everyone
6 days since dx with a DVT in the lower left calf. I met with my hematologist two
days ago and he approved a trip (driving) starting at 12-16 days past dx. I forgot
to ask him if there was any danger in going up into elevation in the mountains-
6,288 ft at the top.
Has anyone been told that higher elevation after DVT is dangerous?
Thanks! :)

do not work well with Xarelto? I get uti frequently and normally take
Bactrim for that.

Nicotine Patch

Just curious if anyone else developed DVT after long term use of the nicotine
patch? I was diagnosed with my first clot in May 2014 and I have given a
tremendous amount of thought to the cause. I have not had a recent surgery,
injury, or traveled anywhere. I am not on birth control. Neither of my parents or
siblings have clotted. I am not overweight and I am fairly active. I am 37 and
otherwise healthy. The one culprit I can identify is the nicotine patch. I quit
smoking and have used the patch daily for 3 years. The patch is deemed healthier
than smoking but nicotine is not without it's faults. From what I have read, it's
nicotine that restricts blood vessels and makes them more prone to clotting. Has
anyone experienced or heard of the nicotine patch potentially causing blood
clots?

DVT calf 21 weeks pregnant-lots of questions!

Hi everyone!
After 3.5 months of my calf hurting (initially due to injury, I'm a distance runner.)
and FIVE ultrasounds, they found a DVT in my lower left calf. I wasn't admitted-
only put on Lovenox 2x/day. CT scan was negative for PE. I see my hematologist
on Wednesday but a few questions for the group:

Is it normal to just be put on Lovenox?

When will this calf pain go away?

The ER dr encouraged me to walk as much as I could. Does this advice sound
right or should I be taking it easy?

I'm paranoid about even bumping my calf right now. Can I dislodge the clot from
accidentally bumping it?

This anxiety following the DVT sucks. It's not a question but a mere statement. I'm
very grateful that they caught it and I'm here though!

Thank you! :)

Any thoughts? Thanks

When can you feel safe again

I was admitted to the hospital 41 days ago with DVT and PE (stayed there for 5 days). Came home on Coumadin and lovenox but was never able to get the INR to settle down so now I'm on xarelto. I go from the double dose to the single dose tomorrow. That means I will have been on xarelto for 22 days.

A couple of days after starting xarelto the unbelievable calf pain subsided but the whole leg and foot swelling remains about the same.

Does there come a point with time or symptoms that you can be pretty confident that there is no longer a time bomb waiting to blow?

One of the most difficult parts of DVT/PE has been the uncertainty. Does the risk go down or go away in time - when can one feel safe or safer again?

I was diagnosed with DVT in my left calf. They found one small clot. They of
couse did dopplers on both legs and found none in my right leg. I have been on
Xeralto since hospital stay and they told me I should not form any clots. My
question is... I have been feeling a slight tenderness in my right calf and
concerned that they either missed it on Doppler or that I an still forming. It
doesn't feel anything like the clot I had in my left! This is more like a twinge! I may
be panicking! Has this happened to any of you?

Can I get clots on Lovenox?

Hello every one,
First I like to say I am so very thankful for this site/forum. It has saved my life with the posts I have read this past year. Unfortunately, now I am having another problem. It is as follows:
I was on Warfarin before at a very high dose and my blood was not getting thin at all. I had asked my medical provider to give me the name brand for it was fear that the generic was not good enough. Well of course they wouldn't do to costs which I don't feel is right and I even offered to pay the difference. To no avail it didn't work. I was still getting clots on the warfarin and was at 30 aday. I went to see a Hemo. and he placed me on Lovenox. I felt better and it seemed to be working. If I went off of it I would get a clot. Now I have been on a therapy of Lovenox for a year and one month now. This past two weeks I have been feeling very ill. I am having all the symptoms I had when all this started accept for the pain in the calf when walking. My signs and symptoms aren't... read more

Ironman to Multiple PEs......

42 year old male, in pretty good shape. I am a triathlete, and did an
Ironman last November in Arizona. Today I am limited to brisk walks
until I get the clearance from the doc (not that I could do much
anyway). about 7 weeks ago started getting shortness of breath on
exercise, progressed to while at rest. Several misdiagnoses,
bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma, etc etc etc. until July 1 when I went
to the ER with severe pain on breathing (ironically, both my GP and
pulmonologist declared me in perfect health that morning, maybe a
touch of exercise induced asthma).

Diagnosed with multiple bilateral PEs. Searching for the cause, no
current evidence of DVT or upper body clots, all blood tests (factor
V, Antithrombonin 3, protein c/s, homoocystine, 20210 mutation) are
normal. Cancer screening and liver tests negative, CT of
pelvis/abdomen show no clots there (not an MRI though)

I have done some research while off work and discovered that endurance
