One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

in early march of this year I fell down while on the job. I hit the ground pretty hard but got back up and proceeded on my current task. The next day I had a bruise on my leg and it was starting to feel kind of stiff. the day after it did not feel much better and was starting to swell a little , the day after that it swelled more and was starting to hurt like hell. Long story short: I went to my clinic , x-rayed for broken bones, then to cardio where i received a sonogram and then they sent me to ER where they in turn told me i had a full length clot from my hip to my foot. the cardio surgeon told me go home, rest for a day and take blood thinners and percacets for pain. I could go to work as soon as i felt better. this was the prescribed treatment of modern medicine and the clot would go away in time, check in with my clinician PA or Doctor for follow up. Two days later i was back at work and it was afternoon, the pain was getting bad and I refused to take the percacets on the job. ... read more

I have DVT of the main vein of of the brain. I am 21 years and currently
taking coumadin. Two questions:

1. About how long does it take for the clot to be dissolved back into
the blood stream?

2. Besides taking the coumadin, is there anything I can do personally to
help dissolve the clot?

Vascular Surgery - Remove DVT

Hi, I have been under the care of a hematologist for 2 years for a blood clot running from my groin to my calf. I take ten/mg of coumadin a day. I would like to rid myself of this clot --- there has not been any change since I've gotten it -- multiple ultrasounds show no change.

I've been doing some research and saw there is a procedure where a vascular surgeon can remove the clot. Has anyone out there done this or discussed it with their doctor. I am wondering why my hematologist has never brought this up --my hematologist basically told me there isn't any other option and that my body had to break the clot down on it's own --- which it clearly has not done.

I appreciate any thoughts anyone has on this topic. I am thinking of going to my primary care to get a referral to discuss my case w/ a vascular surgeon.

Thanks!

I have Factor V and previous history of PEs, DVTs etc. Had D-DIMER done
Monday following an increase of symptoms. It came back at 380. Tuesday, after 3
therapeutic treatments of clexane over 36 hours it was suddenly down to 206.
Testing done at the same place, same conditions etc. No one can explain
how/why it dropped so quickly. Anyone have any experience or explanations?

I have chronic DVT/PE, and after my last episode I became a Coumadin
"lifer." I'm resistant; my standard dose is 10-10-7.5 repeating. Last
week I got cellulitis and my gp put me on Keflex (I'm allergic to the
'cillins), but I had a reaction to that, too, which left doxycycline
as the safest option. It has a rep for dangerously raising INR, so
vasc Dr lowered my dose to 7.5. Checked INR and it was 1.7, so back to
regular dose. Rechecked today (2 days later) and it was 1.6. I leave
for the beach tomorrow and Dr is faxing an order for a recheck to a
lab there. I had a weird tingling/heat feeling in my DVT leg (though
little pain and nothing at all like my DVT pain) yesterday and chcest
pain off and on yesterday and today. I'm waiting for the Dr to call
back to ask if I need to wear TEDs in the car or if frequent breaks
are enough, and I'll mention it if/when they do. I'm hoping someone
who's experienced week long below range scores in the past can help

DVT in Groin during Pregnancy.

Hi, one week ago today I was admitted to hospital with a hugely swollen,
discoloured and fluid filled left leg. After an ultrasound, I was told that I had a
large clot in my left groin. I was started on daily heparin injections as I am 28
weeks pregnant. After 4 nights in hospital, I have returned home and have been
told to rest and elevate my leg. My mobility is severely affected; I can really only
manage to get around the house and even that is very painful. I am taking
paracetemol every 6 hours for the pain. Can anybody tell me about their
experiences of a clot in the groin in pregnancy? I'm petrified that the pain and
immobility are going to be long term problems. I've no idea how I'll cope with a
baby when I currently can't stand long enough to shower. Can anyone advise on
when I might hope to see some improvement? Thanks for any help.

The risk of long flights

I was planning to fly to London end of August (approx 7.1/2 hour
flight), then a 3 hour bus trip, and wonder how risky this is since I
had vein surgery on June 25th to correct a superficial vein deficiency
in left leg. A follow up MRI revealed a blood clot had developed,
something I had not had before surgery. I took Lovenox shots for 2
weeks, a follow up MRI showed blood clot had gone. Doctor said due to
my upcoming flight I should have a shot of Lovenox prior to the flight
and one upon my return as a precaution. Various medical sites on the
web suggest flying within 3 months of surgery is risky so perhaps I
should wait until late Sept/early Oct. Some articles even suggest
waiting for a year until flying. My mother is 93 years old and I do
need to go and see her. I can delay my trip until October but not
sure that would make much difference. I could not delay it for a
year. Since I do not have DVT I am wondering if I am worrying
unnecessarily any... read more

Can anyone tell me just how long it takes to be fully recovered from a DVT and fit for work? I developed a DVT in the calf about a week after returning from a holiday flight last month and no-one, not even the doctor can give me an indication of how long I'm going to be off work. I'm a teacher - the only answers I get are - everyone is different, it will be a while yet!

Hey everyone, I'm hoping you guys on here can give me a big of reassurance, I'm
a 23 year old female who has been diagnosed with a DVT and superficial
thrombosis about a month ago. I was On Heparin injections twice a day a 7mg of
Coumadin. My first inr was 1.7 My INR stabilized at 2.3 for one INR test so was
taken of Heparin, but since my INR has varied between 1.7 and 2, I'm now on
10mg of Coumadin and am yet to see a stable result. Im follwing everytging the
doctors told me about my diet and Vitamin K My first question is, how long
should it take to be stabilized? Secondly should I be put back on Heparin since
my results aren't staying in the therapeutic range? my last question is, since
being on Coumadin I have develope a pain in my right leg the same as the pain I
got with the DVT in my left leg, could I have developed another blood clot while
taking the medication?
Thanks, I hope someone can help me out, I don't really understand what my dr
tells me.

Blast of steam to end the pain of varicose vei

A device that’s smaller than a matchstick and sprays super-hot steam into blood vessels is the latest treatment for painful varicose veins.

The steam ablation treatment has proven effective in shrinking and destroying swollen veins.
One week after the treatment, all the veins the device were used on were blocked, with no blood flowing through them. Researchers say the treatment has fewer side-effects than other therapies.

Varicose veins are enlarged veins, usually blue or dark purple in colour. They develop when small valves inside the vein stops working properly, leading to blood pooling in the area.

It’s not known why the valves weaken, although there are a number of risk factors, including gender — women are twice as likely to get them, possibly because oestrogen seems to have a relaxing effect on vein walls, making the valves more prone to leaking.

Other risk factors include a family history of the problem, being overweight and having a job involving a lot o... read more

Good Morning all,
I have 2 superficial clots in the back of my leg(calf) I am being
treated with warfarin 10mg and my levels are around 3.1 to 3.5 my
range is 2-3 but I guess slightly over is ok as it fluctuates. Anyhows
yesterday my ankle swelled and it is still swollen today, I also have
a strange sensation in my leg, not painful just constantly achy and
strangely tingly, with occasional dull ouchy pain.I ride my bike once a
week about 12 miles and am active as a mum would be with a young
daughter and a house to run.I do keep whacking my ankles on domestic
appliances as I am a bit clumsy lol but no bruising, have a small deep
bruise but only about a couple of centimetres so nothing to write home
about. Is it normal to swell? and is that sensation normal as part of
the healing process or is it more damaged due to my bike
rides/lifestyle.I have been on Warfarin about a month before that I
was also on Clexane since 31st May with. Has anyone else had this as ... read more

I am a police officer who was laid off. I am have been on coumadin for the past 2 years and my department never knew. Know I am in the process of interviewing with several departments. I will eventually have to take a pre med exam. I am afraid that if any department knows this I will not get an offer. Anybody here a cop on coumadin? please respond.

I have no heart problems, the reason I was put on coumadin was that I had a pulmonary embolism. They never could find the reason why I had a PE.

Anyone on a lower dose of Xarelto?

Hi All, the recommended dose of Xarelto for DVT/PE/VTE is 15mg 2x a day
in first 21 days and 20mg 1x a day after that. There are, however,
therapeutic approved dosages of Xarelto of 10 mg 1x days and 2.5 mg 2x a
day for other medical conditions. Is anyone in this forum being treated
for DVT/PE/VTE on a lower dosage? Or anyone thinks it is a good or bad
idea asking a doctor to try so. The reason I am asking is that I am not
sure I will be able to cope with a 20 mg 1x a day treatment with X2,
side-effects wise. Thanks!

I am a 37 yr. old male that was diagnosed with a DVT behind my right knee in Dec.'09. I am currently taking 7.5 mg of warfin daily and my INR is usually between 2-2.5 Over the last couple of months I am constantly dealing with some sort of swelling in my right leg. Sometimes it's my ankle today it is my calf. My physician just tells me to keep it elevated with a heating pad. I have been doing it all day and have no relief yet. The back of my knee is very sore when I bend it or stretch it. Is this swelling normal after a DVT ? I feel like I'm 37 going on 90. I am very active and play alot of golf but lately I have been restricting how much I play because of the constant problems. About 3 weeks ago my ankle stayed swollen for about a week. Oh yeah, I also had a severe staff infection in the same knee about 2 months before the DVT. Possible cause?? I have alot of questions but I do not know anyone close to my age that has went through this. I have only seen my regular physician on th... read more
