DVT deep vein thrombosis forum

One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

DVT - upper arm

Has anyone else had a DVT in the arm? I'm a 28-year-old female with no
risk factors (no birth control, no smoking, no family history) and
developed a DVT in my upper arm last week, in addition to a PE. I was
in the hospital for a day and am now home on warafin and Lovenox, just
waiting for my INR to become stable. So glad to be feeling completely
fine now!

I have to wait 3-4 months to do any testing for clotting disorders,
but I did have a healthy pregnancy and C-section with no clots, just
two years ago.

Just wondering if anyone has experienced something similar...Thanks!

Long Term Clexane Usage

Hi all, Recently I was told to stop taking Warafin and Xarelto, due to severe
allergic responses to both medicines. i was put on Clexane injections twice daily
for a DVT in my right leg. At this stage I will be on Clexane for three months,
however if my clot does not disperse, or if another appears I fear I may be on
Clexane for life.

Is anybody else on long term Clexane injections? Are there dangers to long term
useage. I am aware of the risk of Anemia. Any advice from long term users would
be appreciated.

Swollen leg, how long till it reduces in size

The picture at the top of this forum with the swollen red leg is a carbon copy of what my leg looked like after my groin thrombosis following a hip replacement. Its been almost two years since the surgery, I've been wearing a medical sock, firs to the hip, then to the knee for almost two years now. The swelling has gone down but my leg is still larger than my other leg. I know the leg may never go back to its original size. My question is, after two years will it reduce any more. I'm quite content with the way things are (I'm still on the planet) and am wondering if its worth still continuing to wear the medical sock; to me it looks like the leg is as good as its going to get.

does d dimer keep rising if you have a clot?

First off I'm really sorry if I come across as insensitive or a
hypochondriac as I know many people here have had very serious & scary
dvt/pe events so forgive me if I'm coming across as trivial or
annoying to you.

But last month I was having unreal chest pains when breathing in and
they did a d dimer. Normal is like 0-240 but mine was 267. Very mildy
elevated but they kindly did a radioactive scan just in case and quick
ultrasound on the left thigh. Thankfully they didn't find anything.

Well about 2 weeks after that I started getting this stabbing,
throbbing, shooting etc in my left calf.
It moved up to my groin 3 days ago so I went back to a&e last night on
good advice of the people on here and they did another d dimer. Well
this time it was something like 242.

Still slightly elevated but lower than last week.

Anyway does this rule out the possibility of a clot?
Because I've had these pains for like 2 weeks and surely the d dimer
would be raised a... read more

i'd like to hear if anyone remembers what the doctor told them their d
dimer level was at the time of their diagnosis and if that's what made
them suspect a clot in the first place?

Could this be DVT? 3 ultrasounds done so far

Pain in thigh, what could this be? Could it be DVT?

So two weeks ago I was flying a plane (I'm a pilot) for a while- I flew a 3 hour flight, a 4
hour, then the next day another 3 hour flight and then another 4 hour flight. I fly a small
airplane- so it's pretty cramped in the cockpit. When I got home I noticed a burning pain
behind my right knee- the kind you feel when you reach down to your toes.

I was worried right away about DVT and went to the ER where they did an ultrasound
that came back negative for clots. I then went and had another ultrasound done by a
vascular doctor that was negative also.

My right calf was slightly bigger than my left calf, and I have been feeling some sharp
pains in it occasionally. I went and saw a vascular surgeon who had another ultrasound
done on it that came back negative for DVT, but they found a small clot in a superficial
vein. So I was right about a clot, but it isn't anything threatening. So I've had 3

On May 22nd I was diagnosed with a thrombosis in my arm. This arm is currently
broken a d the thrombosis was where the break is. But in the past in 1997, I had a
malignant sarcoma in this arm, with radiation, after which I had occasional bouts
of lymphodema with cellulitis.
Anyhow, I was put on the standard dose of Xarelto for DVT. This being 2 times
15mg a day for 21 days, then 1 times 20 mg a day for 9 weeks. After a week and a
half of the 15 mg x 2, I started to feel weak and headachy, this feeling got worse
by the day, accompanied by what seemed like a never ending heaviest period
ever.... I felt like life was being squeezed out of me.
My regular family Dr, took a blood test for my hemoglobin level,, then promptly
took me off the 2 x 15mg, and told me to start with the 1 x 20mg. I cut the pill in
half, and take 10mg in the morning and 10mg at night.
I was feeling sick after 1 dose of 15mg before, so was afraid of taking 20mg all at
Well as soon as... read more

Hi new to this forum but what a find. I am 37 and had pins and needles all down my left arm, leg and side of face in March. Went to the doctors as I thought something wasn't right! They refered me to a storke clinic as the thought was that maybe I had had a TIA. After symptoms getting worse and leaving me very tired and spaced out as well as very uncomforatble I was sent for a vascular ultrasound. That is where I was diagnosed with a large spontanious thrombus in my jugular. Spent a few days in hospital and now on Warfarin for the next 6 months. However they are still not sure as to why I got the DVT. The tests for the TIA continued, I have had a MRI and MRV which were normal. Then I went for a echo cardiogram the other day and have now been diagnosed with a small hole in the heart which I knew nothing about. Could this have caused the clot?? I dread going for any more tests in case anything else comes up that I didn't know about. Has anyone else had a hole in the heart and a jugu... read more

Can Clots Originate from Lower Back?

I had blood clots in both lungs last September (2012) and was
immediately put on Warfarin and had the shots in the tummy for a
couple of months as well. I have a very old Dr. (80)who can't remember
anything from one appt. to the next even when I was seeing him once or
twice a week. Anyway, I was wondering if I should be asking to see a
specialist as they never did verify where these clots came from. I
have such severe back pain that I swear it has to be coming from
there. This past week the pain started radiating into my pelvic area
which has never happened before. I have a physical job and can't
afford to quit as I have no other training but am worried that I'm
killing myself. I only could afford to take off 1 month after the
clots. Now I have to try and get by on half of the work I did before
as I just can't seem to do any more. My Doctor gives me 0 info and if
I ask him anything he says I worry too much so I don't ask him a thing
any more.

Hi - diagnosed yesterday with 3 clots just below knee and whacked straight on warfarin and daily injections. There are 10 Clexane injections in the box with a repeat on them. I'm on crutches with a broken foot in a cast which is how I got into this mess in the first place. The DVT pain is much worse than the broken foot. It hurts as soon as I stand up - I can't even brush my teeth so the most I can bear being vertical is only a few minutes at a time. Then I've got to sit down in a hurry.

My work is cool with me taking as much time off as necessary - I've got about 60 days sick leave so that's not an issue at the moment. I have no idea when I'll be back at work. Doctor says we will deal with this week first and then see where we are at. At this point, it would take me forever on my crutches to get from my desk to the toilet at work anyway. I'd be grimacing with pain at that sort of distance.

Has anybody been in a similar situation with the pain? The last three days have been th... read more

I have Kaiser insurance and I am only getting help from my primary care Doctor. After being on coumadin for months, another thrombus has formed in my right upper posterior tibial veins. My Doctor doesn't seemed concerned. The only treatment I have received is the blood thinners. I am concerned about PTS.

I would like to request a referral, but am unsure exactly what to ask for. Please help!

INR Test and Doctors Response Time

My sister has her INR checked on a weekly basis. Her levels are never consistant so she has to either up or lower her Warfarin. The thing that bothers her most is that she doesn't have confidence in her doctor's staff to call her in a timely manner with the results. This week she had her levels checked on early Tuesday morning. She never heard from anyone so midday Friday she called and asked for the results. As searching another staff member gave her last weeks level and she question that and then the staff person looked a little more and said you are right that was last weeks. Finally she was able to find out that her levels had dropped all the way to 1.2. So she needed to increase her warfarin that day. Is this common to have doubts about your doctor and staff keeping you in the loop. After all this is a life threatening situation. Any thoughts?

Experienced Firsr DVT and multiple and PE's 6 months ago. Off coumadin for
about a week now. Noticed swelling around my ankle a few days ago this
morning the pain was unbearable. Didn't want to make a trip to the ER but
figured better be safe than sorry. Found out I have 2 new clots ER doc was very
vague and uninterested felt like he just blew me off. Is it unusual to develop clots
so quickly after being off coumadin for a little over a week? Was hoping to get a
little more information before I left the ER but that didn't happen.

is there anyone out there who has had dvt's through drug use and is afraid to go from Low weight molecular heparin (clexane) to walfarin because of the risks of internal bleeding if i relapse - in the last 4 months i've reduced from an average of 6 - 8 hits a day snowballing to an average of 6 hits a fortnight - i do want to keep on my script and go to rehab but i know if i'm on walfarin and i wanna use i'll just stop taking the walfarin - i'm too scared to tell my doctor why i don't want to go to walfarin - i feel guilty that i want to remain on clexane because i know it's 11 per day for them - i sometimes think i should just try and adapt my diet and stop wasting their time - i'm now afraid to post this - yeah i got this from my own actions - is their anyone who's been where i am - should i just drink cranberry juice and have done??
