DVT deep vein thrombosis forum

One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

Can i wear my compression stockings twice ?

I am new to compression stockings. My doctor prescribed knee high
compression stockings for my odema/venous problems. I have started using
Sigvaris compression stockings but I am not quite sure how to use them. I was
instructed to wear the stockings when i wake up every morning and off them at
night. I realise that one has to wear a new pair of socks daily. I wake up very early
in the morning to observe my prayers and have my bath about four hours later.
This is my normal daily routine. My problem is that If i wear the compression
stockings as soon as i wake up, can i remove the stockings four hours later to
enable me have my bath and then wear the same pair of stockings after the bath
since it is still the same morning or am i suppose to wear another pair of
stockings? Is it better for me to delay wearing the compression stockings for four
hours until i have my bath? I am really confused because i want to ensure that i
use the stockings correctly so that i c... read more

Yaz Lawsuit

Since I've tested abnormal for APC Resistance and have to have further testing later this month, when I saw one of those commercials for a class action lawsuit against the maker of Yaz, I called and had my info taken. The law firm is taking my case and fedexed me paperwork to sign. They were interested in the fact that I tested abnormal for a genetic clotting disorder.

Initially, I held off contacting any law firm until I had the result of my genetic testing. However, something told me to give them a call anyway and I'm glad I did. They are trying to push for the drug manufacturer to add to the Yaz prescription instructions that patients should be tested for genetic clotting disorders that they may not be aware of before being put on Yaz. Somehow having the disorder, although possibly dormant coupled with the Yaz is what may be causing DVTs and the associated problems.

Just wanted to share this with everyone. I'll keep you posted as this develops.

Menstrual cycle after DVT

First thanks for all the great information on this forum, I have been reading for a
few years now.

About 3 years ago I was diagnosed with DVT in my leg and had a few minor PE's,
it was misdiagnosed at first so by the time I made it to hospital things were pretty
bad, after a few weeks in hospital and 2 years on warfarin, I am almost back to
normal now. Other than the constant ache in my leg my biggest worry in that my
menstrual cycle has still not returned to normal. I live in a country where English
is not the first language so it is a little difficult to talk to my doctors about this.
Wondered in anyone else has had a similar problem or has any ideas about this.

Thanks in advanced for any help

Torn Meniscus, DVT

I had an accident while playing basketball of March 2012. I do not
have insurance, so I was forced to heal and rehab the knee myself.
With much research, I've realized I had torn my meniscus. I wore a
brace for the following months with light exercise, until I felt
strong enough for heavier exercise such as playing basketball again 3
months later. My knee has felt fine for the most part, although me
knee does shift and feel unstable, for the most part it is strong.
During January 2013, I had increased pain in my thigh, which lead to
my calves. The pain subsided a month later and I felt fine. During
February, I have noticed that a bump was forming from the back of my
knee. I researched what it might be and it turned out to be a Baker's
cyst. During this time, my calves were swelling up. I thought it was
due to the fact that my body was producing more muscles to support my
knee. Well long story short, I checked into the hospital with a severe
DVT from my ca... read more

Update - now on Lovenox

The last 18 months as I worked through the broken healthcare system in America,
I feel once again that I dodged another bullet. I spent several hours in the ER last
night only to find the rat poison, Coumadin, is not working. Well its working and
keeping my blood thin, but I find now I need Lovenox.

So why does it take an ER doctor to find this stuff and take action?

Lately, I've been having problems with my leg and foot wanting to fall asleep.
Feels achy, heavy, tingling, numb, hot. Feels like it did when I got the first DVT 18
months ago. No swelling. Pulse in my leg is excellent.

Not sure exactly why - my INR was 3.2 a month ago, and yesterday read 4.4 at the
Coumadin Clinic.

Maybe the sharp increase in INR was due to my orthopedic surgeon shooting
cortisone into my shoulder two weeks ago? I guess the surgeon is perplexed why
the two packs of steroids he ordered back in March to knock out the inflammation
from the rotator cuff and bicep tendon su... read more

Natural sleep without pain

I had knee surgery on 26th April this year and 5 days later was rushed to the Er with a clot that had travelled from my ankle to my groin. The pain I had in my calf I though was due to the bandages, unfortunately not. Since then I have been having Clexine 2 x daily along with Warafin. INR levels peaked at 3.2 then have gradually dropped backed with the latest being back down to 1.3 on Monday. I wear a compression stocking and have been told that I will need to wear it for the next 2 years. I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for sleep. I sometimes go for up to 2-3 days without sleep due to the throbbing in my legs and the headaches brought on by the Warafin. My doctors have given me Mersyndol Forte for the headaches that the warafin is bringin on and Oxazepam to help me sleep, but I am concerned about becoming dependant upon the oxazepam so I try to use it sparingly. Add to this that the warafin akes me pee so much that just when I do manage to get to sleep my... read more

Hi,

My DVT is 2 years old and veins still about 50% occluded. I have fragile control on PTS. I'm looking at joining a gym and wondering if there is any equipment to avoid/specifically use. Has anyone any advice/experiences to share?

I was thinking of the treadmill to measure distance and speed and avoiding cross trainer/bikes because of pressure on calf/thigh muscles.

Thanks in advance

Off the Wall Question

I know this is an off the wall question, but since I've been watching
some of the trials on television, and I have a blood clot in my leg
myself and the blood clot is on my mind 24/7, I was wondering, wouldn't
prisoners who are confined to their cells (especially those confined to
their cells 23 hours a day and only allowed out 1 hour a day) be more
prone to blood clotting?
Strange question, I know; Just curious.

Hey everyone, I'm looking for any help or direction in finding a
vascular surgeon in Canada that will help me with my old clot.
I had a DVT happen in left leg, knee to pelvis, and came off warfarin
around the 1st week of July. I was doing fine, but always suffered
from PTS, which unfortunately has gotten worse. I have chronic pain in
my leg now, and because of the swelling I tend to overcompensate with
my right leg which causes me pain in both. Fun times. Sarcasm.

So I live in Newfoundland, Canada, but am willing to travel anywhere
really to get someone to look deeper into my issues, and hopefully
find a solution for me whether surgery, or a valve to open up my
damaged veins. I can't seem to do anything hear so Im reaching out to
anyone here that lives in canada that has found anyone that will help
me. I don't care if its outside canada, but would like to stay within
if I can. So I guses that's it - Im a 34 year old otherwise healthy
female who got struck... read more

Hi had right calf pain on outside of leg by a big vein for last few weeks pain
heightened when driving or sitting. Had an ultrasound today and have left feeling
very confused and a bit worried. The doctors (there was 2 present at the scan)
said they had never seen anything like it ( always encouraging) my Soliel ( not
sure how to spell it) vein was heavily dilated I asked them to explain basically
they said its not a DVT at the moment but it could turn into one. It's very painful
but no redness or swelling. They of course said come back if its more painful or
turns hot or red! Also was concerned because Gyne put me on hormone tabs and
have taken them for past six weeks but now stopped as was concerned! Any help
or advice greatly appreciated was referred from ER so at moment got no
specialist to refer back too. Thanks guys!

possible 2nd dvt after pe?

4 years ago, I was diagnosed with dvt to my left leg, after 2+ weeks in hospital released, but on Warfrin for 1 year.
After 2 years from the dvt, I had multiple PE in my lungs. I was then tested for blood disorders. I am factor V positive.
I have been on 11 mg of warfrin for the past 3 years. Yesterday, after a day of being out with my daughter, I have the most severe pain in my right leg, just under the knee. I am concerned as to whether or not if it is possible blood clot. It hurts if I move the leg slightly, and almost impossible to put weight on it.

Dabigatran (Pradax) - Info Needed

Hi all,

Is there anyone out there taking PRADAX®(dabigatran etexilate) and or anyone with knowledge about this new drug?

I first found out about dabigatran, from a friend, who's mother-in law was recently prescribed it after surviving a clot induced stroke. She said it has no side effects and requires no INR monitoring.

From what I was able to find on line, here in Canada, dabigatran has been prescribed for people who have hip and knee replacement surgery to ward off DVT/PE and is all the information I can find.

So why am I stuck with Warfarin and all it's wonderful side effects?

I'll be asking my GP about this next week and will post what he tells me asap.
