One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

Hi, I had right femoral DVT 5 yrs ago.  Symptoms were shortness of breath and
aching leg, particularly ar night, which led me to get a work up, which led to cath
to check heart.  Heart was fine, but following procedure had severe pain in leg
and that is when they found 6 inch clot.  I have history of horrible headaches as
well and have tested on the low positive end off anti phospholipid antibodies.
Also, the cath caused pseudo aneurism in adjacent artery.   Treatment was 1
week inpatient then 7 mos warfarin, all fully resolved.  Fast forward 5 years:  have
severe pain in right side pubic area of groin, and have noticed shortness of
breath and some intermittent chest pain and much more frequent headaches over
last few weeks.  Groin pain started last night only.  Head pain, chest Pain or
tightness and shortness of breath, I have been attributing to increased workload
and very high stress job, but now with bad groin pain, I am a bit concerned.  No
leg swelling... read more

DVT in one leg -- now pain in other?

Hi, not sure if I'm being too worried about this, but thought I'd check to see if anyone else has had this feeling. I am about six weeks into a DVT on my left side (due to a broken bone) and have been on Lovenox (10 days) and Warfarin (INR of around 2.0 for the past 4 weeks).

Last week I started feeling a tingling pain every few hours while walking in my right leg (non-DVT leg). Now, I feel it a little more often and a few times a day I feel a slight pinch in the thigh (I feel that on the other leg as well). The leg hasn't swelled at all, turned colors or temperature. And the feeling is much less than when I had the DVT on the left side.

I plan to get another Ultrasound done in the next 2 days to verify if a clot has developed there or not, though my doctor has told me already it's doubtful since I've been therapeutic already on Coumadin.

Has anyone else who has had a DVT in one leg noticed similar symptoms in the other leg? Could it be the Warfarin that is causing th... read more

Is there ever a point in life....

Is there ever a point in life that one day you wake up and say to yourself 'you've got this issue, so deal with it', and you do!

I was diagnosed in June and I still havent come to terms pyschologically with it. Do you ever?

I understand its a life-changing event ( a lot of people dont understand that) but is there a day when you stop worrying about if your going to wake up in the morning, am I going to clot again, will it be worse the next the time round, stop worrying about every litte pain be it in your leg or anywhere else in your body.

I wish I could wake up tomorrow and be in that frame of mind

European vs. American compression levels

Hi all.... I live in Europe and was prescribed compression stockings, level 2. They are quite thick, hot and of course very tight.(nasty, I hate them, but thats another story...)
Recently I was in the States and wanted to buy some stockings there, as they are not as expensive as they are here. (which is strange, as they all seem to be German or Swiss-made.)
I was unsure of the American equivalent to compression level 2: I googled quite a bit and found both 20-30 and 30-40 mentioned as equivalents.
At a well-known U.S. online shop I was told to purchase 30-40, but after buying a pair at a local pharmacy I had a signifigant amount of pain. I never had this here in Europe: my feeling was that the socks were much tighter than what I had been wearing, so I purchased 20-30.
The doctors here in Europe tell me that the 20-30 socks from the U.S. arent tight enough: they dont mean the fit, but rather the resistance that they feel when they pull on the sock that I am not wearing: they are... read more

self-management of INR and dosing in the UK

Hi everybody! I am new to this site and I have found it extremetly useful. I am 42 and I have been diagnosed with spontaneous proximal dvt in my leg about a month ago. It was a long journey as my GP dismissed it and it took me three weeks of worsening symptoms to get to a private consultant who finally diagnosed dvt. I am on six months of warfarin but I understand that a life-long treatment may be considered. So far, my experience on NHS has been very poor: late diagnosis, not seeing a consultant, no further tests planned. My INRs are not stable: it took me two weeks on warfarin to get to the required range (2-3), then it was 3.3, and a week after 3.3 I am back to 1.3 for no evident reason. My dose has not been massively different (7-8 mg all the time) and no majour changes in diet or lifestyle. I am considering getting one of those self-testing machines and managing my dose myself. I wonder if anyone in the UK had experience with that? Do you find it easy? Is it reimbursed or you p... read more

HIGH dose Clexane

I advent posted here in a few years but I was wondering if anyone had some
experience of high dose clexane and pregnancy.

Ok a bit of history, 12 weeks after baby number 1 I had PE's, 5 weeks after baby
number 2 I had sub massive bilateral DVTs. Was on 40mgs prophalatic dose
clexane thru out the pregnancy but it obviously didnt work.

Have been off warfarin for 2 years.

This week I discovered I am pregnant again so immediately called my GP who
called my haematologist. They decided 40mgs isn't enough and prescribed me
clexane. When I picked my prescription up, the pharmacist said she thought it
was an extremely high dose to have and it's now completely freaked me out.
Anyone else been prescribed this amount during pregnancy.

Scared about everything. Thank you in advance.

The end of the warfarin road..

After 10 months of warfarin therapy due to DVT/PE, the doctor has said
simply...stop taking it. The clot has partially dissolved. I asked for referral to
hematologist for clotting studies, but they have said they aren't going to do them.
I had the tests done in the hospital but every other doctor I have seen has said
that those results are not reliable because I had an active clot and was already
receiving lovenox injections. Genetic tests were fine but I am concerned about
the Protein C and S.
It seems so anticlimactic. After dozens of INR tests, a boatload of doctors
appointments, 3 ultrasounds, and 10 months of symptoms, a nameless, faceless,
"specialist" says to stop the meds. Not expecting a parade, but maybe an actual
discussion with a hematologist and some reassurance or at least a plan for the
future. Anyone else stop warfarin with no further testing or visits? Is this

My 11 year old daughter was diagnosed 6 months ago with a dvt in left femoral vein. She was on lovenoux for 2 months, was told she could come off 1 month early because, the sonogram said she was born with two femoral veins instead of one, so the other was fully functional. She really wanted to get back to her sports, she is extremely athletic. I have done so much research on dvt's, and have noticed that alot of athletes develop clots. Not sure why that is. My concern is, now she has a higher chance of developing another, and if so I was told she would need medicine for life.I can't imagine an 11 year old on this medicine for good and not being able to do sports that she loves and has a future to do in in college. i am devestated by all this. I worry every day, attend all her practices for fear something will happen. She has been tested for everything and there are no blood disorders. We did travel in a car for 8 hours, three weeks before the clot, is it possible for the clot to show sy... read more

I was diagnosed last week with a DVT in the left politeal vein behind the knee. They started me on Coudmadin and Lovenox. When I was admitted my INR was 1.0 They tested it on Monday and it was 1.6. I was happy and felt better about things and thought I might make 2.0 by Wednesday. They raised my Coudmadin from 5 to 7. So yesterday they did the INR again and it was 1.4....why? I thought I would be up since they raised the Coudmadin. I am taking the same same vitamins, everything.

I was diagnosed with a DVT in my Jugular vein, subclavian vein and into my left arm in December. It was mentioned that if my swelling continued I should wear a compression sleeve. I just wondered if anyone else with arm DVT has been advised to wear one and if anyone in the UK knows where I could get one? I am no longer under the care of the Vascular Surgeon who advised this, and Anti-Coagulation Nurse is not sure where to get one from! Thanks for any help.

Hi All,

I'm struggling to get some info on whether I should/could be surfing with my DVT. I have DVT in left leg from ankle to above the knee, PE's throughout both lungs. Initially got the pain in July but was continually misdiagnosed until October. Finally have been on Warfarin for 7 weeks now. I have been walking and swimming/body surfing and my lung capacity is definitely improving. But I tried to surf yesterday with sports compression tights on and my leg is in the most pain since I've been on the Warfarin. It's also hot and swollen again (which I've not had for a couple of weeks).

I'm mainly scared about making things worse or dislodging the clot again. I don't mind the pain so much as I did some surfing, snorkelling etc before I was diagnosed- and the pain was excruciating then.

Does anyone know if I'm at risk of dislodging the clot? I have a surf helmet now to protect my head so apart from fin cuts I'm not too worried about the bleeding.

Hi - I broke both my ankles in July. The left was in a hard cast and the right in an aircast boot. They gave me Lovenox in the hospital for 3 days and then in rehab for 4 days. I got my cats off lst Tuesday late in the day. Wednesday morning I noticed my left eg was like twice the size of my right. I called my MD who told me to watch it for a day as it migh tbe from exercis. It was still the same on Thurs so I called again and he had me come in. Took one look and sent me off for an ultrasound which showed a clot behind the left knee. They admitted me overnight and started me back on Lovenox and added Coumadin. I came home Friday and I have to admit I am very frightened of this. I keep thinking the clot is going to break off and kill me (my brother died of a pulmonary embolism). They tell me it would be unlikely. I got different answers from the MD's as to whether to rest or be somewhat active now - is there not one general rule? Are there things I should be doing to preven... read more

Aches and swelling 2 years on

In june 2010 I was diagnosed with a DVT behind my right knee at the end of my pregnancy. I was prescribed clexane injections for 6 months, but ended up taking them over a year due to a seocnd pregnancy. Since then I have had the occassional ache in that leg if I've bee stood up too long, walked too far. I was warned about this by the DVT nurse as they said I will always have scar tissue there now. However this last week or so I have noticed it is aching a lot more. I am on the floor a lot playing with my daughter , so probably sat on my legs too much, which I know is a stupid thing to do. My leg also seems to swell a little which I've never noticed before unless I've been on them too much. I'm not too worried about other DVTs as after going to bed my legs are fine the next day, and I know the other symptoms, colour, temp etc to watch out for. But just wondered if aching and swelling 2 years on is actually common to anyone else who has suffered a DVT. THank you.

can coumadin damage your blood

is anyone able to help me with this question?
can the use of coumadin (warfarin) do damage to your blood?
had blood tests when went on the treatment initially.
the tests were all within normal ranges, all levels OK.

this pill causes allergic reactions to some people or they are not able to metabolize it without getting ill feelings.
