One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

side effects of warfarin

Hi everyone. I have been on warfarin for about 10 days now after 3 long months of fragmin injections for an extensive dvt running from groin to ankle in both legs. I have read about the side effects of warfarin on many sites but they only seem to list pretty major effects and what i am wondering is what are peoples personal experience with side effects if any from warfarin. I am asking this as since i started taking this (my INR is 3.1 by the way) i have been pretty tired and grumpy with more aches in my legs and just generally lethargic, could this be down to warfarin or just a coincidence? All replies will be appreciated. thanks.

Pain relief for d.v.t.

My husband (68) has had a d.v.t. in his calf for 1 week. He is in agony if he does anything other than sitting with his leg elevated. He is taking Tramacet (Tramadol + paracetamol) but to be honest it only helps for a relatively short while. Is there anything else which might be more effective? And - will the pain lessen when his INR reaches the right level, or is it determined by something else? Please help...

Diagnosed with DVT and so scared!

So yesterday I've been diagnosed with DVT. I have started having symptoms 10 days ago and
because of my panic disorder went to ER very quickly. I didn't have anything major just some
pulling sensation in my leg when I was walking. They did a D-dimer which came back negative. So
I was sent home. However, I just had a feeling that it couldn't be anything else. My symptoms
didn't quite fit with any other diagnosis. It started getting worse and I got myself referred to a
specialist. They too were skeptical, but did an ultrasound and confirmed (much to everyone's
surprise) that I do indeed have a DVT behind my left knee. And I am just so scared. I am alone with
my little girl most of the day and I am terrified of PE. How likely is PE exactly after you start DVT
treatment? And is it normal to have sudden nausea, chills and fatigue with DVT? Please help!

Skin discolouration

Hi to you all out there.
I am into my 4th year post-popliteal dvt and have learned to cope with the constant background pain. However, I have noticed over the last 6 months or so that the red/purple/blue discolouration around the bottom of my leg/ankle appears to be spreading up my leg- it's now reached halfway up my calf, but the colour is like a brown iron stain rather than the multi-colour further down. Any ideas? My GP has basically said that this is normal, but I'm not so sure. To me, it's as if the iron from my blood is leaching out into my skin because the blood flow around my leg is not as efficient as it should be.
Your advice/comments would be very welcome. Thanks.

DVT in leg due to surgery

I'm hoping for some insight, and reassurance I guess... I'm a healthy, active (until
my injury), 43 yo who had Achilles' tendon surgery six weeks ago. I got my cast
off this morning only to discovery I had a mildly infected incision and DVT behind
my knee!
I thought the pain that had been slowly building this past week was "healing
pain", as the previous five weeks had been perfect! Followed all the rules, had a
compression machine the first two weeks to help prevent clots, kept it elevated,
didn't overdo I thought, etc...
I'm starting Xarelto now and wondered, what now?! How will this impact me? My
recovery? Feeling very discouraged and frustrated, although trying to stay
positive! Any insight would be appreciated, thanks!

Is it a DVT?

I had a sudden sharp pain in my upper calf and developed swelling in my lower
leg. I had an Upper Leg only Ultrasound scan and a D-dimer blood test. D-dimer is
persistently raised but sonographer says no upper leg DVT. Pain has moved
behind knee but still pain in calf and down to ankle. Whole leg aches. I am
worried it is a DVT as my mum died of this but GP says I don't have the
symptoms and hasn't given me a reason for raised d-dimer. Any help welcome
with regards to symptoms experienced and what to do next?

I was diagnosed with a DVT last year in my upper leg, i came off
wolverin about 6 months ago and one leg is still visibly bigger than the
other one. Will it take time to go back to normal or will it forever be
this way? Also if I lose weight will it still be the same size?

Okay, last year I took a trip cross country, and when I got back I
developed DVT in my legs and PE in my lungs. After six months of
warfarin apparently I developed swelling in my legs, and as of a week
and a half ago I'm experiencing pain when I stand or walk. I have
compression socks, but the pain is still there. I'm wondering if I
have venous insufficiency. I was told I might have VI but they're not
sure. I'm not sure. I'm so lost right now. I never knew that my DVT
would cause me long-term damage.

Very high D Dimer but not clot

Last Tuesday my ankle started to bother me, didn't think much of it but the next day the front of my leg ( shin area ) was hot and red and hurt to touch it. A neighbor passed away 2 weeks ago from a blood clot in her lung, so of course I freaked out and went to the ER...they did a d dimer that was over 5,000 normal is 250. They did a ultrasound of my leg and no clot. Just came back from the follow up with my family Dr. and he's sending me to a blood Dr. Now I'm scared out of my mind that I have some terrible illness. Anyone else have a high d dimer with no clot and everything turned out okay?

Coming off Warfarin

Hi all,
I'm back for a bit of advice/your experiences. I'm about to go off warfarin after being on it for nearly 11 months. My history with dvt is: was taking birth control pills, had recently fallen on left hip and fractured elbow in the process; was quite a bit more sedentary as a result. I've been on warfarin longer than they wanted me to be, but did so because I wanted to continue it over the holidays because of air and car travel.

So, I'm contemplating weaning myself off of it, simply because I think it would be easier on my peace of mind. Hemo did tell me however that I could quit cold turkey. I would like to start taking something in place of it, perhaps fish oil or vitamin E, if for no other reason than the "placebo effect"... I've gotten so used to taking my meds at 7 pm every day that I think I may panic if I don't do that any longer.

For those of you who have come off warfarin, what has been your experience? any body re-clotted? anybody taking natural supplement... read more

Everyone, give it your all in being determined to buy and wear
your Compression Stockings. Just keep persisting in your efforts.
I am not able to wear them. I could not be measured at the
medical supply store by the two specially trained employees with
their years of training and not even with the additional special
cotton lining as it was would be too painful to endure the
compression stockings fittings. And to top it off it was
questionable that due to a elastic, spandex , latex type of skin
allergy that even if I did not have the pain that the heat
generated by the compression stockings, even through the cotton
material tube lining would still cause a skin rash or even
breaking of the skin from the heat created and retained inside the
compression stocking hosiery. It is possible that the hidradenitis
supperativa and neuropathy damages that extends through the body
even to the skin surface is the reason. I was pre-diabetic have
had hidraenitis... read more
