One new option for people who have been diagnosed with a blood clot is Thrombolysis which uses medicines and devices to remove the blood clot. While not risk free, and not offered universally, the following doctors and institutions do offer this. If you think you may be interested, it is important to act quickly. Blood clots harden within the first several weeks, making it much more difficult to remove the clot. This procedure has risks and you should discuss with your doctors the tradeoffs for your particular situation.

I had bilateral pulmonary embolism, I was stable so in the hospital I was started on lovenox 100mg twice a day and warfarin 5mg. So my INR would not move, warfarin was increased to 10mg, my INR would not move. Now I am going to coumadin clinic last week to 15mg for two days INR movedto 1.1. I cant believe this and the lovenox is so expensive. Im have eaten green vegtables in a three week period probably four times. Im taking the medication daily. I did find out that I have a prothrombin gene mutation, could this make me resistant to coumadin.

How to tell if your DVT is moving

Ok this may come accross as a weird question, but I was wondering if
there is anyway to tell if your dvt is moving. I have several from my
groin to the top of my calf due to a martial arts accident. But the one
from the back of my calf is giving me a 'tight' sensation, (I walk on it
and it feels tight), now at the top of my knee I'm beginning to feel a
similar sensation. Could this indicate my clot moving around? Or could
it be a result of blog trying to squeeze through? Any thoughts?

I was wondering if anyone has ever had a new DVT while taking warrafin to treat an old
one? I had one in my left calf-no redness, no swelling-just pain. Now on meds and now
my other leg is painful and with the same symptoms. Any help would be appreciated!

DVT in arm from sleeping on it?

I know this might sound crazy, but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask in case anyone has some insight.

A couple of nights ago I rolled over onto my right arm during the night. I slept in a pretty awkward position for several hours. I was lying on my stomach with my right arm stuck straight underneath my body so that the back of my hand was between my thighs and against the mattress, and the inside part of my elbow was under my chest.

It's not uncommon for me to fall asleep on a body part and wake up to a numb limb until the sensation rushes back. However, this was the worst numbness I have ever felt.

Since then I have had a dull pain on the inside part of my elbow where I must have been crushing my arm. Sometimes I also feel pain on the outside part of my shoulder. I don't notice any swelling or discoloration; it's just the internal pain.

Is there any risk of developing a blood clot in this scenario? From what I've read, most arm clots are a result of surgery, cathe... read more

I'm 19 and in Oct last year i was diagnosed with a 10cm+ DVT in my upper right arm,
starting near my arm pit and heading up towards my neck. I also had 20+ pulmonary
embolisms in my lungs.

At first docs thought it was the Pill that caused the clots. But i hurt my shoulder 6
weeks prior to diagnosis, which was then considered the main trigger. I was in
hospital for a week. my arm was blue and swelled, i was extremely short of breath -
could not walk around the house without feeling like I had run a marathon.

I was on 80mg Clexane injections for 10 days and then Warfarin for 6 months.

I then had a CT scan, VQ scan and ultrasound that all showed that the clots in my
lungs and arm had not completely dissolved, many of them had attached themselves
onto the walls of my veins.

CT scan of arm showed that a tendon blocks blood supply to my arm when elevated
above my head. Doc is now looking for a surgeon that could possibly fix/remove/ clip
tendon to stop blo... read more

the effect of sleep on INR

I have been doing alright on warfarin lately, expected to go off for testing mid to late
Jan. I have not experienced being cold (too much body fat), I have lost some hair, no
bruising, it took 2.5 months to find a pretty consistent INR but then was good. Need
to e between 2-3. I have had some dental work done, the doc said I bled more like
someone with gum disease but that was all. Created a few other injuries with no
issues.

I am also in grad school, and recently finished a project that was all day and night.
After 4 night of 5 hrs sleep in a row, I had a night where I got merely 2. The following
evening, I got a papercut at the tip of my middle finger, and it bled like I tried to
actually cut my finger off.

Do you suppose sleep raised my INR to cause such a dramatic reaction?

The night following said papercut, both the need to finish the project and the
throbbing from my finger caused me to sleep only 1 hr. It is now 5 days and much
sleep later, and... read more

I have had pain in my thigh, calf of my right leg for a number of weeks(8-10 at
minimum) I had a Doppler completed from groin to ankle and it was negative. The
pain is also behind my knee, I am a healthy 26 year old male and in reasonable
shape. No family history. I am freaked out about clots. I have been told it is
muscular and to see a physio, which helped a bit but as soon as i stopped going
it came back.

What are the chances of this being more than muscular and being a clot? I think
my foot looks slightly larger than the other but I might be imagining that. It hurts
more when I walk

Hi! Glad to have found a discussion forum on DVT. I'm a new victim of this condition.
About a month ago I began noticing mild discomfort in my left calf. I thought it might be a pinched nerve, which I sometimes get and I did have some discomfort in the lower lumbar region of my back at the time as well. After almost a week of feeling this I took a look at my leg for the first time since noticing this pain and was shocked to discover it was indeed red and swollen. The thought of a blood clot never occurred to me as I never had anything like this before. I showed the leg to my wife who urged me to make a dr. appointment ASAP. When I went to the dr the next day he looked at my leg and sent me for a venous doppler test. He explained every detail of what was coming up. If a clot was detected in my femoral artery I would be admitted to the hospital emergency ward, given a CAT scan to see if a clot was in my lungs and if it was, I'd be admitted and treated for DVT. It all came j... read more

Hi Everyone,

I was diagnosed with a DVT the end of Feb this year in my left leg and
my right leg they are not sure why it has happened as i had no risk
factors eg. Long travel, contraceptive pill etc. I was started on
clexane injections and warfarin i had to have my bloods done daily
until my INR stabilised. I have now started with Shortness of breath
especially when walking around and upstairs, i also have chest pain
radiating into my back pain in my arm which goes numb and tingling and
i have sharp shooting pains into chest feeling dizzy and my INR is out
of range. I attended A+E and they admitted me with suspected ?PE i had
a chest x-ray which does not show PE's i also had a VQ scan which
again my G.P says can miss PE's my result from the VQ scan came back
at Low Probability which means they can not 100% say i dont have a PE
they have discharged me from hospital and said i may have Pleurisy i
have again visited my G.P as the shortness of breath is bec... read more

I was dx'd with a calf dvt about 3 wks ago and put on plavix. After reading all the posts on here, I only took the plavix over the weekend. On Monday, I faxed the report to my ob/gyn who immediatley changed my meds to lovenox 2 injections a day for almost 3 weeks, and continuted my life as usual. My dr added coumadin last Friday. After taking it the first night, I woke up with neck and back pain. I felt like I had possibly slept wrong and needed an adjustment by my chiropractor. I went to school on Monday, and everyone told me that I should call my dr (they said I didn't look well). I called, and they put me in the hospial. After testing they found a PE. I stayed in the hospital for 4 days, they changed all my meds and were finally able to get me to theraputic levels. Everyone has told me how lucky I am to still be here. The strange thing is that I never really felt that bad, and have had a real wake up call as to how life can be take away in a single second. I still have not figu... read more

Sexual activity with DVT

Hi,
I was diagnosed with DVT this past Sunday. I don't think that my case was as
severe as some because I was discharged from the hospital that same night. Like
many others I have been put on 5 days of Lovenox injections and started at 10mg
of Warafin per day. The Dr's are currently working to get my pt/inr levels to the
right point, but all have encouraged me to do some level of physical activity. The
Emergency Room Doc even said I could go back to work if I wanted.
My question is, is there any danger in having sex while recovering from DVT or
while taking either lovenox or warafin. I don't want to do anything harmful but it
would be nice to relieve some of the stress of this situation.
Thanks,

In conclusion, long-term therapeutic anticoagulation with
Warfarin does not alter serum chemistries, markers of skeletal
turnover, urinary calcium excretion, or BMD in male primates
with a high dietary calcium and vitamin D intake.
These results imply that long-term Warfarin anticoagulation does
not contribute to osteoporosis in humans.

surgery with blood clot history

I had blood clot in left leg in mid-April and am now on Coumadin 4mg with blood draws every three weeks.
I also have Ulcerative Colitis, severe, and need to have my colon taken out since no medicine is working, including Prednisone and clinical trial drug.
My question: is it dangerous to have surgery with history of blood clot? Surely someone in the world has had surgery with history of clots. I need to get this colon out!
Thanks
